I love that you tackle this side of collecting, cause it does have a dark side. I way overspent this summer on all the sales, so now I'm back to one film a month (till October, when VS has a sale again). As a collector, you really need will power. You need to control your FOMO or it will control you. We don't NEED any of this stuff, we WANT it. Keep doing these videos, it's important to talk about this.

@@jespernicolaj It really was / is an addiction. Making these videos helps me think through the habits a lot and realise how truly addicted I had become. Not only to the buying but the hoarding of titles too.
I think there are many of us in the same situation, but also a lot that don’t quite realise what they’re doing yet.

@@PhillwithadoubleL Absolutely true. Most people are in denial. And it is extremely hard to control, like any addiction, this is not less of an addiction than say drugs or alcohol. We just justify it more, cause it is not physically harmful, but mentally, it is the same strain. I think you need to say, I have this amount of money or titles I can buy every month AND I can only buy from THESE companies. I have sort of settled for Criterion, VS and Arrow. Films are like comic books. There are SO many you want, but if you focus really hard (and it IS hard) you end up getting the titles you ACTUALLY want. For me, it's hard work every day, keeping myself in check.

    It’s not just collecting movies.
    It’s any collecting habit.
    I collect Neca action figures.
Some of the old ones are ridiculous prices.
My advice is to collect only what you can comfortably afford.
Don’t get sucked into buying for the sake of shelf filling or because something new has been released.

I have a German Blu Ray of The Hitcher, that will do me. There are many boutique movies I buy, but there are only a few ‘special editions’ I buy if there is a standard edition, I buy movies to have a certain title in my collection, I don’t buy them for the packaging. Recently brought Santa Sangre special edition from Severin UK, but it was worth the price as it comes with 4 discs and it is an amazing movie.

@@marymungleandmidge4080 I’m right there with you. Realising the packaging isn’t really what I want. Most standard edition have all of that stuff so there really is no need to pay the massive premium for that cardboard.

I know I should limit myself and set a budget, especially as I've picked up another expensive habit or two (no not cocaine or anything dodgy, just more 'collecting/being adicted to' something perfectly fine... unless it puts you into debt). I find myself though "spending whilst I can" because of medical and other factors that could put me out of my well paid job 'tomorrow' and doing so not only feels like I'm preparing for a future when I'll *have* to budget, but also helps me to relieve the stresses of thinking about the parts of my life that could lead to that job loss.
On the upside I no longer drink so I do have more money to spend (and can realise when I'm drunkenly ordering way beyond my means)... but still I know my spending, wherever it goes, is at least partially a replacement addiction for the alcohol; well at least it's not physically killing me... and I have _improved_ from a time just before and just after the alcohol when I was so depressed I 'needed' a title to come through the letterbox every day. None were titles I didn't want but I could have waited for many to get cheaper if I wasn't working (very hard) to time my purchases so I wouldn't get a day when nothing arrived!
P.S. Yes, with all that said, I have that CE of *The Hitcher* on order... and my orders *do* tend to concentrate on LE that may sell out (as a steelbook collector that's a 'bad thing' _BUT_ for other titles I;m getting better at waiting a few months at least for a good price drop to a target that I set and try not to waiver from.

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@blujustin4175 I’ve been a lot better with things now I’ve adjusted to waiting for those titles that I don’t want limited or just not going to have time to watch. It’s cleared my head a lot by doing so too.
It’s been a source of other issues too, with partners questioning how many parcels are coming through the door. I admit,
When I look back, the sheer volume of things was ridiculous… and there was no way I was getting around to watching or making use of ‘everything’.
It’s definitely worth budgeting and just considering if the thing is going to get its use in the short term. So many titles I was buying at full price had often dropped in price before I’d had chance to watch them, or just been dumped on a streaming platform. Not all were movies I wanted to keep in my collection either.

@@PhillwithadoubleL It's actually not inflated at all. You get exactly what you pay for. Standalone 4K is £25, so you're basically paying another £25 for two books. That's par for the course as far as books are concerned.
A newly released paperback screenplay is gonna be at least a tenner if not more. The Oppenheimer screenplay for example is retailing at about £13 last I checked.
A 200 Page hardback is going to be at least £15, regardless of what it is. In the case of film-writing, those BFI Classics paperbacks for example are almost £15 brand new and they're half the page length of what we have here. I have no issue buying those for the films I want to read more about, so I certainly have no issue paying for a book twice as thick for more or less the same price.
This set is not an example of collectors being overcharged. It's a simple case of collectors needing to come to terms with whether they actually want to read the books or not. If you don't, that's fine, buy the standard. If you do, great, but books cost money.
No matter how you break down the costs, I can't find anything controversial about the price of this set. If anything they could be charging more.

200 page hardback: at least £15 (BFI Classics paperbacks retail at almost £15 and they're half the page count)
So with conservative estimates on the costs of the books that's £43 altogether.
£7 for a future-proofed 4K and the nice box bringing it all together is all you're really 'overpaying' for.
The question is: do you want the books or not? Because if you do, there's no way you leave a bookshop with these two for less than £25. If you don't want to read the books, you don't have to buy them, and that's fine.

The question is "would you be prepared to walk in to a bookshop and buy these two books for £25?".
Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of books I haven't read yet, but I know I will one day, even if it's years down the line. I don't think that's necessarily an issue. They're gonna be sat on my shelf whether I read them on day one or if I read them after my __th time watching the film a decade from now, so there needn't be a rush.
If it's a film I haven't seen before I tend not to want to read a book about it straight after a first time watch anyway. If I like the film enough I know I will definitely return to it, so the book is something to savour for after the rewatch.
I just got round to reading the original Drive novel in the last few months and that's been sat there for 2 years. Search for screenplays. Newly printed ones cost at least a tenner brand new. Oppenheimer is retailing at about £13 last I checked.
A newly released 200 page hardback is going to be at least £15, whatever it is. For film-writing specifically, those BFI Classics paperbacks are almost £15 and they're half the page count of what you get here. I have no qualms buying those for the films I want to read more about, so paying more or less the same price for a book twice as thick (and in hardback) is a no-brainer.
The bottom line is simple: do you want to buy the books or not? If you do, then there can be no complaints about the price. It's more than fair. There's just no world in which you walk in to a bookshop and come away with these two books for less than £25. You get exactly what you pay for.
