Movies, music, stamps, coins, plates, tea pots etc etc etc, they're all the same. Part of the appeal of having a collecting hobby, is the collecting, and the knowledge that you own it.
Do we 'need' it, no, but we don't 'need' most of the things we own in life. We just like to have it and think about it. We love the searching, the ordering, waiting for the post/delivery, having it in our hand, and adding whatever it is to the collection 👍

@@MUSICLOVER72 I agree. With my collecting, at the moment. I’ve just got to a point of feeling a little overwhelmed with how I’ve been collecting. It’s got to a point where I’ve taken a look and realised a good portion, I kinda no longer want. I think as you say it’s sometimes more a love of the whole process of getting these things to add to the collection more than the thing itself

This really makes sense to me. I need to really honest with myself lately if I need it because I don’t always watch the discs or listen to the record. It feels like when it’s released it’s like it’s a chance to go back in time to when it first came out- yes I can go down the street and buy masters of the universe like the good old days - sure I’ll do it ! But it’s not the same when I get them. It’s like I’m excited that I can buy it - not so much watch. It’s not great. I don’t mind being rare or missing out etc. great video.

@@thebradc glad you were able to relate. I think a lot of what I chat about… there’s a number of collectors who dare not talk about these things or at least share openly.
It can be an addiction that not many are prepared to face. I think a lot of my thoughts possibly come with age but when I consider things more now it makes me realise that I didn’t need all the things. Sometimes didn’t really want them. As you say, something more excited about the shopping more than the item.

This is truly hilarious, love the editing. I never had a large collection but I sold a lot off. Sold my steelbooks par one 'Lost in Translation' and culled it down to owning only a few items. For some reason I got the urge to start watching films again, mostly old black and white movies from the 30s and 40s and I wanted to get some of the ones back I had sold (duh). Like anything I strive for minimalism and I relate so much to those thought process you are going through. Same with me buying music, records and cds and selling them off too after a while of them just sitting unplayed. I went all minimalist and donated and sold so much off of my collections. But now I do wish to curate films again but maybe just in DVD format nice and cheap. I repurchased Bicycle Thieves that I once had a bluray of only to get the dvd in it's place. What figures.

One thing I've noticed from my small collection of around 600 discs. I seem to go back to the same movies over and over again. I reckon I could have 100 discs and be content. I don't really mind as all of my movies came from charity shops (back when they had good stuff) so I spent very little money on them. I don't understand the need for a massive collection just on the off chance it's not on streaming. If that is ever the case and you want to watch it buy it now. I guess my point is having an entire room full of movies just so you know you can watch it when ever you choose even if you choose never to watcg it just sounds strange lol I hope I'm explaining that right. As always fantastic video I really enjoy your views on the negative aspect of collecting rather than "10 reasons to start a physical media collection in 2024" type video all the other channels do.

I agree with you. I think we could all quite happily get on with a much reduced number in the collection. Only a small fraction of a collection ever seems to get used again.
The other thing with the large collections. There’s a finite amount of time that the physical purchases will last for. What if it’s not streaming kinda becomes redundant with the fast approaching problems that physical media Blu Rays will be facing. I was reading that an average life expectancy for a Blu Ray disc is around 10 - 20 years before you start facing looking for issues like disc rot. It’s something I might soon be doing a video on after I’ve researched a little more.

For example, i recently watched Stallones Lock Up, which is described as Action, it has action but its more a prison drama than action.
Stallones Escape Plan id put in action cause its filled with action, Lock up is more about prison life with some action thrown in.
At the end of the day the easiest choice was to just make a Prison genre section in my collection cause prison films can be a multitude of genres.
