I try to detach my personal demand for a release from the cost of it. If I didn't have much interest at full price I won't buy it at half off. Whether a film costs £3 or £30, it'll still take around 2 hours to watch (more with special features). What kind of value someone puts on their time will vary from person to person. It can be useful to add that time cost onto the monetary cost of a product and it might help with some wiser decisions. Great video Phill and good food for thought.
@@ElliotCoen I certainly get more value from criterion and other boutique labels. Those extras usually make the boutique label purchase worth it. Still other criterion that are tempting me. Lone Star and Slacker are both on that list
@@ApolloT-vp5dn yeah, January always does seem a lot slower. It’s like the recovery month. I’ve not gone too mad during the sales, always feels worse when I’m picking up so much for the kids Christmas pressies at the same time.
Hmv really good for 4k blu-ray. Got lots with the 2 for £30 and the 3 for £40 deals, Amazon uk do a 15 to 20% off deals too. Great time to be a movie fan.

I’m struggling to think of when the last Criterion Collection sale was on. Until the sale, the cheapest Criterion title I got from HMV was £12.99 for Badlands.

I have Predator on Blu-Ray,and I have the 4KUHD Steelbook ,only one still got 2of. I have The Frighteners on 4K Steelbook 3 Discs but I was underwhelmed by it,The Witch too by Second Sight, Just tame, and A let down!

Hoping Arrow come out with that promised edition of it which will be when I go for the 4k. I haven’t picked up the second sight release of the witch. I had infernal Affairs in my basket along with blow out and one false move. Then I kinda still felt disappointed that IA hasn’t been released in 4k despite it being a 4k scan and I can’t help that think a 4k will be released at some point. So I’m going to hold off on that one, I’ve more than a stack of titles that I’ve not watched from the last year or so I need to get to first.
I'm bad for that with the Terminator movies. I have about six or seven editions of Terminator 2 and about four editions of The Terminator. I'm planning on getting the new upscaled UHD (they're not 4K) edition of The Terminator. It currently costs double the price of a regular UHD, so I'll wait for a sale.

Growing up as a young lad in the 70s 80s tv shows where brilliant and so where some films that you just had to seen at the cinema. A long came vhs so you could view them at home then dvd then thay tried lazer disc then things started going online streaming. I used to be in my local video store watching at least 2 to 3 films per night the good old days . then most of the stores shut there doors or big companies went bust along the way. lifes changed massively as a lad Growing up believing your dreams where just beyond the stars . now its like theres a sale on in every store knocking our the same things. its like thay want to re bottle the Good times of the past? but the genie now out of the bottle so thay have to re package or reimage the films. from the past because thay seem to have lost the art of telling us all a good story. so they split the movie or flog it in many parts or in different forms just to get a few extra quid out of us older guys . Some times we find a hidden gem of a movie but its becoming quite rare these days.

Many now just seem instantly forgettable, particularly those movies that are done for the streaming services. They just… don’t hit the same. I used to love the ‘community’ of the old video store. It’s something we’re massively missing now.
@PhillwithadoubleL I remember going to see lord of the rings and getting excited even if it was over three films. as I read the book as a big all three volumes in one . And enjoyed it as for the hobbit it was a fun book to read and the film should have been one film really yet it did nothing for me at all splitting it over three films was a bad idea . If we look at even the starwars movies from seeing them as a lad in 1977 then hearing that thay where going to do three new ones on how lukes i am your father became darth vader. I was excited to go and see them all as for the last three I saw a few trailers and tought this look polished and the music sounds kinda cool but who the hecks this girl ? And wheres my heroes of the past movies gone .I never saw any of the new films in the cinema because it wasn't my starwars anymore I did see it on Disney as someone had it playing on there TV and I have tried to watch some of the TV shows all that mythology all them books that lucas allowed to be written about our heroes and even giving Disney the plots for how to continue the skywalker storyline thay just tossed it out of the window and served the fans a compleat turkey with out the real trimmings that why the movies have really died the paying fans are now classed as trouble makers yet none of these actors or studios would be where thay are with out our love for the movies in the first place oh well its there loss in the long run just don't pay to watch anything thay decided to put out unless it sticks to the true storyline
@ it’s funny with Star Wars. As much as the new stuff kinda disappoints, it’s nice seeing them putting out some stuff that brings in a new audience. My kids get a load of enjoyment from the new stuff (especially the tv created offerings), even if it’s not something I personally want. I’m glad the Galaxy is living on in some way for my kids to enjoy as I once did.
I have 4 Criterion releases. I bought them at full price when they came out because they were films I wanted. It kinda sucks that it's only 40% on certain releases in the UK and there's nothing that I feel I desperately need to own.
I have picked up some at full price before. I just tend to hold off a little and have them sat in wishlist. Think I have probably around 20 criterion. It’s not a number that grows quickly. Yeah, the 40% off was missing on a couple of titles, typically a couple of titles that were tempting me… guess I’ll wait a little longer.
Double dipping when certain titles are on sale is sometimes worse than if you pre-order every single item because you automatically think now you can buy like a world champion because it's cheaper. Because how often do I let myself be seduced by reduced prices and in the end I have bought more films than I actually wanted and that's the dilemma if you're a collector, so it doesn't have to be exclusively steelbooks or other special editions for you to lose control. You see you are not the only one 😅
If i upgrade a film to blu ray or 4k i immediatly get rid of the weaker version lol. Also i did away with my entire VHS collection to charity years ago and sold all my laserdiscs, but do regret those decisions somewhat

@@PhillwithadoubleL i think VHS are trash quality but there is obiously nostalgia, i dont regret it except for a few that are now worth money that i gave away lol. Laserdiscs are just cool lovely artwork decent quality, i wish i could have them still really but they take up quite a bit of space and i have none as i also have 600 video games
@ that’s quite a game collection. Is it modern console or are you a retro collector ? I have a few VHS again, like you say. It’s the nostalgia thing. I end up using them for display. No possibility of using them for anything else.
@@PhillwithadoubleL evening phill, its both retro and modern but more retro , about 10 consoles. 90's onwards as that was my first era! and a rough guess ive got 300 dvd/blu ray/4k, im guessing you film collection is vast?
@ yeah the movie collection is large. Gaming collection, very very limited now. I’ve worked through loads of consoles over the years but never really let ahold of any. In fact, I sold my N64 just this year. Some of the retro collecting got mighty expensive and I found I was just playing the newer games over the retro. I still enjoy gaming. I just find time limited so the older stuff doesn’t get a look in very often.
Gruv is getting me with the double visits lol. I missed out on 1 title I was wanting cause I took too long thinking about it, a few days later, its back haha

Holiday sales are always the best for those who don’t want to spend through the nose to get something they want. But I intend on playing my card very carefully when it comes to spending on my credit card,if I spend way too much my parents will yank it away from me and that’s that. I’m more laser focused on getting just one thing and I’m done which is an anime Blu-ray box set which I couldn’t afford but now that the price came down(which I ordered from a different website). I’m going to do just one double dipping on another anime blu-ray box set of a tv show.So as I said before it’s buy one and I’m done.Happy hunting Phill😊👍❤️
It's all consumerism. Buy the odd sale item, If you really want it, but leave the rest is my advice. I've left the rat race of collecting. I just buy what I'm interested in 👍
@@MattVs_Movies this is the thing Matt. I do WANT the other titles too. They’re titles I’m interested in for sure but my issue is… I don’t need them all at the same time. Really, I can wait a little. But it’s that FOMO that gets me. Now, I only really buy the titles for myself rather than for the collection so that aspect isn’t a worry. It’s the volume of stuff that I want and the need to get it all just because it’s on offer.
@ what sorta thing are you aiming for with your collection and collecting now Matt ? Are you gonna be collecting anything in particular or curating ? I’m trying to curate down but needing to find time to dig through the depths to weed out some things.
@PhillwithadoubleL yes, I'm upgrading what I have a getting rid of what I'm not fussed about. I go through periods of picking things up mainly on eBay and then nothing. I don't miss the constant new releases . I have a look at sales, but unless something really tempts me, I tend not to get sucked into them. But I do like a bargain!
I clearly don't like any of the films by Criterion that much because I still think even with the discounts their stuff is still to expensive. I've got a trilogy collection of Infernal Affairs that I got for £20.00 and has done me well. Having said that I'll probably get the latest version of Legacy Of Rage at some point to go with my previous blu ray and my old dvd 😅
@@AlexGreat321 it is kinda pricey but with the discount I don’t find them too bad. I get a load of value from the extra features generally so taking that into account, with the discount I’m good to go. Legacy of Rage caught my eye a couple of times. Not gone in just yet but still a temptation.
