VINTAGE RENFREWSHIRE TRANSPORT 1981-1983 mini-documentary, July 2021
A short documentary film by Paul Russell, featuring live-sound 8mm film footage highlights from my final-day reel of the Houston to Kilmacolm Railway from 8th January 1983, and also my Renfrew Ferries movie from July 1981.

KEIGHLEY & WORTH VALLEY RAILWAY, September 1981
มุมมอง 1K2 ปีที่แล้ว
My freshly & professionally restored 8mm film, with its original live-in-camera soundtrack reinstated in time for its 40th anniversary, of this world-famous, ever-popular, and brilliantly preserved 5-mile steam railway in West Yorkshire that delivers enormous amounts of nostalgic vintage atmosphere and detail in both its urban industrial situations, and its attractive rural stations.

มุมมอง 3.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
A NEW PROFESSIONALLY-SCANNED VERSION with ORIGINAL LIVE IN-CAMERA SOUNDTRACK REINSTATED FOR THE FIRST TIME of this ultra-rare and now very popular 8mm movie! This edition of my 8mm film, which includes the entire (and now long-dismantled) 1-mile branch from HIGH STREET to Glasgow's former BRIDGETON CENTRAL terminus in both directions, now looks even better than before and, with its original mag...
RENFREW FERRIES, Glasgow, July 1981
มุมมอง 7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
A BRAND NEW PROFESSIONAL SCAN, NOW WITH ORIGINAL LIVE IN-CAMERA SOUND, of an 8mm film I'd shot on the River Clyde at Yoker and Renfrew, 5 years before these iconic chain-guided ferries were withdrawn by 1986 and replaced with a small pedestrian-only boat. The old ferries had originally worked at Erskine, before the busy road bridge was built. The oldest ferry dominates most of the film, before ...
MULL & WEST HIGHLAND STEAM RAILWAY, July 1984
มุมมอง 3143 ปีที่แล้ว
An 8mm live-sound film I shot of the now-dismantled 10.25-inch narrow-gauge steam railway on the West Scottish island of Mull, which ran from Craignure Pier for a mile and a quarter to Torosay Castle, during the first year of its official opening. The line closed in 2010, and dismantled in 2012.

A four-minute 8mm purpose-made 8mm film clip, shot in the sleepy village of Lochinver, North West Scotland in Summer 1979, to accompany John Williams' original 1971 recording of his classic instrumental hit, Cavatina.

มุมมอง 7243 ปีที่แล้ว
I shot this curio reel of silent 8mm film in 1983, on the warm-up Friday before a busy open-weekend of visitors to the still-embryonic Bo'ness & Kinneal Railway in West Lothian. It wasn't the famous original 19th century loco on visit from south of the border here, but a very faithful replica, built in 1979. Note footage of its chimney being too tall to get through the newly-built canopy at the...
THE RENFREW FERRY 1981
มุมมอง 1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
A lingering and immersive look at a typical working day of the once-popular and iconic chain-driven ferry that once linked the short distance across The Clyde between Yoker And Renfrew, via my own extended 8mm movie footage from Summer 1981. Later in the film, watch for an even more famous vessel gate-crashing the location. Also at the end, there's another, newer ferry operating the crossing wh...

This single reel of silent 8mm movie film was shot by myself in 1977, featuring a cavalcade of vintage vehicles passing by, at first along Sauchiehall Street at Charing Cross, including a brand new specimen subway coach as yet to be installed in the subway circuit, which at that time was closed for a complete upgrade before using the new future rolling stock. A brand new escalator for the resto...

I remember taking this one not realising it would soon be gone. It was well used. Surely they could have kept it open giving Argyle line passengers a route to Queen Street. But now it's built over. I'd forgotten how many platforms there were at Bridgeton, almost a mini-depot.

Thank you ..brought many memories back...but the track didnt stop at kelvin (bridge street) Hall...it went on under the tunnel at yorkhill and over the kelvin at Bunhouse road..I know because this was my wild play grun , from bridge street to the cabbage haugh between spillers mill and the park .It could only be accessed by climbing over the dykes from thurso street or 3 closes between the roost pub and demarcos cafe on dumbarton road .

A highly evocative piece of filming, the railway was very busy that day too, really nice to see. There is an engine at 5:30 partially covered by tarpaulin, I don't remember seeing that when we went many years later.

Clarkston people preferred the trams which during the day ran on a three-and-a-half-minute headway, whereas the replacement 105 trolleybuses ran on a twelve-minute headway, and GCT had a nasty habit of turning short at Muirend any Clarkston bound trolleybuses which were running late. Many people deserted to the Western SMT buses which ran to a reliable timetable. There seemed to be little hands-on management at Hampden Garage and the three-axle trolleybuses of the 1950's were usually in a very grubby condition.

I have a model railway which I loosely call Partickhill because I lived on Vine St. I just finished a scale model of a tenement similar to the one we lived in. I would like to build a model of The Partick Central building but I don’t have any dimensional info. Can you tell me what size the stones were used for the retaining walls up toward Crow Road Station ? I am guessing 3’-0 X 1’-0 I didn’t realize that line went under Hyndland Station. I have memories of being up at Dawsholm Park exploring and I think there were trains there at the time, that would have been the late 60’s early 60’s You have done a great job to preserve this history. I know the effort you have put into this . Thank you Charlie youtube.com/@charlie1872

    • @douglasthomson513
      @douglasthomson513 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, because it's 1981 Martin, you're correct about accessibility - very little remains to be seen today of this particular video entry, hence it's archiving on TH-cam. At a push, the bridge at Partick in this photo shown here still exists, as does a blocked tunnel entrance, bridge and small piece of platform all at Crow Road station. There's also still both gated tunnel entrances and the nicely restored building at Kelvinside Station to be seen. The only other remains on this route today are the now 2 inaccessible Kelvin viaducts leading towards the former Maryhill Station site, and the now severely dilapidated station building at Possil, on Balmore Road.

Thanks for sharing your fantastic photos. Quite ironic I was just speaking to my grandpa a few days ago about this very line after I took some photos of my cycle to Balloch. I live at Caledonia street Dalmuir right on top of where the railway would had been. Despite all the changes over sections of the former line it is quite remarkable that only a small section has actually been built over. Auld street which runs along the side of the site of Dalmuir Riverside station, I'm sure you can see part of the old footbridge. It's been a while since I've walked along the section between Agamemnon st and the railway bridge over Dumbarton road Clydebank but there was still some small sections of track left. Really interesting seeing your photos before sections were turned into the cycle path etc.

Enough room to rebuild the station in the basement . Was mates with the caretaker in the late 80's who told me about it but sadly never got the chance to see it for myself . I would question the date you have quoted, as I would say late 1983/early 1984 as there are a few suggestions that point to those dates. firstly, the DMU Buffet car is still in service but the Mk1 Buffet is in place at Oxenhope and secondly, a closer look at the arrival back into Keighley shows the former Midland Goods Shed in the middle of being demolished prior to the Goods Yard being cleared ready for the building of the Sainsburys supermarket which opened in 1984, and finally, that looks like me on the platform at Oakworth assisting one of our regular passengers off the train and I wasn't issued with my full uniform in 1981
