GLASGOW'S DISUSED RAILWAYS - Dalmarnock to Possil 1981, by Douglas Thomson

- A very rare 1080p high definition slide show of the entire route of this historical freight-only disused track bed, between the above locations.
The views are entirely from my own fully restored original colour collection from 1981, featuring entire areas now either very overgrown, built upon, or totally eliminated and impossible to trace altogether.

Incredible footage. Imagine the transport network we'd have had today if these lines were kept and utilised.

Excellent film. Tinged with a bit of sadness though. I lived near the Red Rd flats and as you go by you can see Gorman Autos old garage and petrol station. There is some graffiti on the walls. It says "Doug", that was my 18 year old brother's tag. He was murdered in that very garage in 1981. Rab-M, Speirsy, and Vid were his mates. Forty years and it is still raw.
Collected building wood items from East End Sawmills in summer 1984 when I worked for my late dad and that's the first time Ive seen the shop since. He would laugh/be amazed like me if he could see this film now. 😀

Fantastic images, I stayed in Swanston St, Dalmarnock, and well remember East End sawmills and the railway, there used to be the Tartan Arrow parcel yard on Dalmarnock Rd, I’m guessing it may have had railway sidings into it but not 100% sure.

Trivia here, the Provanmill, Old Ranza to Broomfield Road, and 'The Broomie' stretch of line featured in a cameo role in a very early Human League video for the song 'No Future' an alternative play on the Sex Pistols song Anarchy In The UK. Anyway, it was used in their live show as well, circa 1978-80s. Around 2.45 min - 2.50 mins here: th-cam.com/video/yLb3-LDK7mI/w-d-xo.html It is often broadcast on BBC4 as part of the "Synth Britannia" documentary. Not a lot of people know that. Subliminally maybe they do?
Know this stretch of the line well. A family member 'allegedly' used to jump on wagons near his house close to the Broomfield Pitches & Balornock School to get taken up to Colston Secondary back in the 1950s. Anyone who comes from the greater Springburn area has trains in their DNA, of course. It could, before the M80 sliced through there, also be walked like a 'daring' shortcut into Riddrie and Dennistoun from the late 60's for the Riddrie ABCs and Dennistoun Parade pictures on a Saturday. Memories!

A lot of the trackbed has been redeveloped now. 2:44 to 3:25 still in place bridges included but very overgrown. 4:47 to 5:08 pretty much exactly the same to this day apart from the bridge under Broomfield Rd which has been infilled.
Good stuff. An expensive undertaking in 1981...
Douglas do you have access to the original photos? I think that might be my late dads' handiwork on the bridge at 2:40 🙂
Quite fascinating. I know of the line under Dalmarnock and evidence of a line at Celtic Park. I've been going to Celtic Park since I was a boy but I don't remember the bridge over London Road. I have two queries, is the rest of the line accessible? Behind Celtic Park is a graveyard, so where did the line go? I tried to look for evidence on Google maps but nothing remains
Thanks Martin. Almost nothing remains to be seen of this line now, and the whole Celtic Park area has been completely rebuilt from scratch. You'd be best studying vintage online maps of the line, such as Railmaponline.com, where it's all still visible and intact, as well as showing all the tracks and sidings.
The railway line crossed London Road at the old Celtic end, then ran behind the Celtic end and across another bridge over the Gallowgate
Try National Library of Scotland map archives. Free search of all old Scottish maps. Excellent for tracking old railway lines.
@@douglasthomson513 Just had a look at this. Can't believe the amount of lines for Glasgow and the surrounding area. Shows how much has been lost for good
Superb film but what a waste of a railway.They got rid of way too many lines.
