your answer to Beatles or Stones is spot on. I wish I had thought of that. I was a Zeppelin fan long before I got interested in those other guys. I’ve only recently become a Beatles listener.
Great CD tag Brian! Great first CD too. I still have that same Cure CD and vinyl when it came out!
Cool. We have had great taste in music for a long time 😀
Good start with a noise comp! Cool Mute comp too. A good ska or 2 Tone comp is a must for any record collection. I have a 'Ska Dance' comp. I remember the Nettwerk compilation. Had it on tape. Moev, Puppy, Severed Heads. Im gonna jump on this contest tonight! Cheers Brian
This contest has reminded me that I often avoid buying comps, and I am not certain why that is. I might have to fix that.
Art Tatum, Steve Reich Tool I think your CD collection might be more eclectic than your vinyl ;) I also like both the digipak and jewel cases pretty evenly. Thats alot of Cohen CDs you got! Cheers man
Ha ha. I do have some surprises in my CD collection!
So many tags this time of year in the VC I am finding! I have been selling off my CD's via my ebay page for some time, since I have just about all of them uploaded in many places for years, but I am keeping quite a few choice (and now rare-ish) ones, like Staring At The Sea. My first CD player I got in 1984. I think is was a Sony, something like $500, and as big as my kitchen table! There definitely still is an audience out there for this format (as my ebay page can attest) and although I have not gone down this road in a long time, you never know. I do have a little single CD player I use on occasion. Nicely done as always, Brian. 😎🎶
Hi Ed, 1984! Wow, that was really early for a CD player. You were part of the early CD vanguard 🙂
@EmbryonicRobot And of course I remember my very first CD (which is long gone): Whitney Houston's debut . I've come a long way I think!
@@onmyturntable7036 Whitney Houston! No judgement from me 🙂
Hi Brian. Nice to see you showing some CDs for a change. I'm still a fan of the jewel case. Yes they are prone to scratching/breaking, but you can easily replace them with new. I'm on the look out for Steve Reich on CD, so I may have to check and see if I can get 'Music For 18 Musicians' at a good price.
Hi Carl, I went through a Steve Reich phase a while back (along with Philip Glass, et al.), so I have amassed a good deal of Reich CDs. I have never managed to find anything by him on vinyl, though. 'Music For 18 Musicians' is worth seeking out. I should have mentioned that my CD is the new recording from 1998. Oddly, I have never heard the 1978 recording.
@@EmbryonicRobot I checked and the 1978 recording of 'Music For 18 Musicians' is a bit too pricey. I'll keep a look out for it in my usual haunts. I was also listening to a bit of 'Electric Counterpoint' earlier on TH-cam. I found it very relaxing.
I meant to do this tag last year and never got around to it. You were an early adopter of CDs, and your friends even more! Weren't players extremely expensive in the mid 80s? Enjoyed this, I hope to do my own. Cheers Brian!
Yes, I think CD players were pricey in the mid-80s. I'm normally a very cheap guy, so I can't explain how I managed to part with my money 🤣
I really gotta listen to The Lowest of the Low. They’ve been around that long and I’ve only heard about them from Glen. I’m surprised you have so many CDs! I’ll have my remarks to say about digipaks and jewel cases and I think my opinions closely align with yours. That Tool album packing concept is unique!
Hi Peter, Trust me, I'm also surprised that I have so many CDs! I look forward to your remarks on digipaks and jewel cases 🙂
I'm going to hope on this too I'm suprised to hear that you have 64 of 1 artist on cd
I should really figure out what artists is in 2nd place. No one can compete with Cohen, though!
It's clear you're not a fan of CD cases. 🤣 I must admit, the art Tatum box took me by surprise. Quine Tapes is excellent. I've just caught up on all of the "Embryonic Robot" videos! It's been a busy time of year. Happy holidays, Brian.
I think I have a few more CD box set that may surprise you as well! Happy holidays to you. too, Mark!
Kurt Weill! I thought you were saying Kurt Vile, and then he turned up on the next comp you showed! Wow, these were some interesting comps! Good luck in the contest!
Thanks, Randy. For some reason, I have avoided buying comps, but maybe that was a mistake 🙂
It's really sad to see Celine struggling with so many medical issues. I always thought she over sang. "Closer" is a good choice. I think "The Smiths" is a great choice. There's a melancholy to all of Morrissey's work, which I find really appealing. "La Bamba" is a fantastic soundtrack, I agree.
I feel genuinely sad for Celine, even though I have never appreciated her music. That must be very rough for her . . .
I have to say, that VU box is gorgeous! I was never really into Leonard Cohen until I started watching your channel. He's definitely an acquired taste, but I've really come to appreciate him recently. And of course, Johnny Marr was a great choice. I feel like the Beatles versus the Stones debate has been done to death. But still, good answer with LZ. Doolittle was a great pick. That's a RSD box that I would have bought.
I can see how L Cohen is an acquired taste for some. I think hie lyrics really connected to me, especially on the early albums. I knew someone who hated them, claiming that all his songs sound the same, and then changed her mind after seeing him live. Maybe we all to to Cohen sooner or later 🙂
Some great responses, Brian! I used to buy CDs to listen to in my car, and records for when I was home. My newest car doesn't have a CD player, though, and so I haven't bought many this year. My record buying is through the roof, though, which has some terrible financial implications! I've been listening to Louder than Bombs on CD for decades, but today I finally got a vinyl version. I listened to it tonight, just before watching your video. So I was overjoyed to see you mention it here!
Haha mark I would have not bought that car since it doesn't have a cd player that is the final factor of a car for me it HAS TO HAVE A CD PLAYER. Lol!
@@JackTheMusicGuy My car-buying strategy is going to the dealership and asking, "Which is the cheapest car on the lot?" When they answer, I say, "I'll take that one."
My car still has a CD player, but it is 10 years old. It will frustrate me if a future car doesn't have one and I suppose it will be expensive to add one. Thirty years ago, I won a $1000 car stereo system with a cassette deck. It sounded incredible. Anyway, that's a digression 🙂
Sounds reasonable 🙃
@@MarkMorris-1962 that's fair mark
As always a fascinating video Brian! I bought HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED and CHEAP THRILLS on compact disc sometime in the late eighties but didn"t buy a player until the early nineties a YAMAHA which still works perfectly. I detest the jewel boxes and LOVE Digipaks....my thrill is to get Classical on vinyl and CD from charity shops in the 2- 3 AU $ price range...vinyl is often a bit "beat" but I manage to score excellent condition CDs on a pretty regular basis!
Classical LPs are the only good records available in thrift shops around here, if you can deal with no inner sleeves and lots of surface noise! I have pulled a few out of the bins, though.
I forgot that not only is this holiday time it's also the time a billion "official" tags. Also this is why you are the High Priest of Threads/Tags/Comp's. You had CD's before you had a CD player? That's just weird man. Digipaks are shit. Once the teeth break you're stuffed. Slide in pockets 🤦♂Steve Reich is even better on vinyl 😂I don't believe I knew that you liked Tool. 64 CD's of Lenny!!! My feedback is Deerhunter Halcyon Digest is excellent & even better on vinyl ha! I enjoyed your CD Vinyl Tag HP
Billions and billions of tags, all made for me. Well, not all. I do have my limits 🙂 CDs before CD player? It seemed like the thing to do at the time. Every time I see Reich on vinyl, it is stupidly expensive. And, now I have to buy Halcyon Digest on vinyl. It never ends...
@I have Four Organs/Phase Patterns & Music For 18 Musicians. Brilliant stuff. I have Cryptograms on cd but all the others on vinyl. Great band. Bradford Cox’s side project Atlas Sound is really good too🥇There you go. There’s your medal. Anything else? 🤷♂️
I think that will do. Thanks! 🥇🎖️🏅
“There’s only 15 questions here”…”My God, I drew a blank on that”…”I remember moving. I knew that I moved a CD player with me”..Very interesting procurement strategy of buying the compact disc ahead of a CD player. I wish you’d expanded on that strategy. Lowest Of The Low are playing in Buffalo right after Christmas. I’m in agreement on the paper/cardboard complaint of the center plastic breaking. “I had to host a sort of pseudo work function. Someone told me the music was giving her a headache”…”I have a difficult time with favorite bands”…Velvet Underground were included. John Cale would approve of this video. If I knew how to photoshop, I would put you in the booth with Leonard and the ladies on the cover of Death Of A Ladies Man! That would make a great T shirt. ✌️
MGK, Well, I am not sure buying CDs before owning a CD player was a procurement strategy, but I would be interested in knowing of that was a good financial decision. Please do learn how to photoshop so you can put me on the cover of that Cohen album. Or, if you can set me up with two women, that might be even better! 🤣
Brian, nice response to Glen's tag. I still love CDs, but try to stay away from collecting them, though I know of many solo piano classical albums that are only available on CD, mostly more modern composers that I would like to have. I am not having much luck remembering my first CD and CD player. Thanks, Chris
Hi Chris, I stopped buying CDs for a few years but, as you note, some things are only on CD. Good thing this tag came when it did. In another ten years, I may not remember much of anything about when I got my first CD player 🙂
Brill KC set. 👏🏻 I’ve often thought of getting it, but I have the individual CDs.
Don't let that stop you. We all need some redundancy in our collections 🙂
@ Some redundancy? How about 50%? 😂😂
50% is probably correct!
nice stuff brian. funny thing i got my CD player around same time (Dec 1987) and like you I had bought a few CDs before I got it. interesting package on that Tool album with the stereoscopic glasses. will give deer hunter a listen.
Hi Steve, Looks like 1987 was the year of the CD player! I am hoping they will re-release that Tool album on vinyl with even bigger 3D images 🙂 I guess I can hope ...
Excellent response Brian. This is a fun tag. CDs don't get any respect. That's plenty of Cohen CDs. I have that Tool CD too. I love popping that in stoned.
Hi Greg, I am sure Tool would sound extra special under those specific circumstances! 🙂🙂
I think I like the digipacks better than the standard cases, they do seem to stand out a bit more and are better when it comes to displaying the artwork. But those teeth...I hate those because they never last. Wow, nice King Crimson CD there, I have never seen that particular one, but I know they put out a lot of samplers, live albums, different versions back in the 90's. That Steve Reich looks very interesting, I like the looks of that one. Very nice Art Tatum set, what a beautiful collection that one is. That's a really nice VU box set too. That's quite an impressive amount of Leonard Cohen albums you have. I haven't heard that Dear Hunter album yet, but I've been wanting to, I just haven 't run across it yet. I always have a hard time remembering his name too, but it's Casey Crescenzo. I always get the spelling and the pronunciation wrong on his name, because it almost looks Italian, but it's not quite the spelling you would expect. But what a composer! Love his music. Okay, now I have to add another tag grrr. I still want to do Sam's Americana tag and now this one. Plus I'll be doing the official tag, but I'm waiting until after Christmas for that one. Anyway, great response!
You might enjoy the Steve Reich album. It's a true favourite of mine. That was the other Deerhunter (the one word Deerhunter) with Bradford Cox. 🙂 It is so confusing. They should really have chosen better names. I haven't heard The Deer Hunter, yet. I am going to pass on the Americana tag, because I don't have enough Americana to pull it off. I remember his tag video from last year and my collection in that area has not moved!
@EmbryonicRobot I'm not as familiar with Deerhunter but I have heard them. The other one is spelled Dear Hunter, but it's still confusing. What's even more confusing is Dear Hunter has a newer album that I haven't heard and I'm not even sure what's on the cover. So I just assumed it was the one I was more familiar with.
@@TCatsDeepVinylTraxx It's a complicated situation!
Great video. Great topic.
Thanks, Pat! I enjoyed your video too 🙂
@EmbryonicRobot Thanks so much.
Hey Brian. Great video! The original CD mastering was awful. I’m with you on the jewel case/ digipak question. That seems like a cool live album. I also have that Tool CD. Killer amount of Leonard Cohen. Cheers
Hi Bobby, I agree that the early CDs were mastered very badly. I have a few stinkers 😔 Some people might say I have too much Leonard Cohen!
@ you can never have enough! 🎄😎
Very cool to see you're still on the cd train. I'll need to do this myself, though I won't be sure about a couple of these questions.
The CD train keeps on going, I guess. I would like to see your response 👍
Hey Brian! I'm still waiting (after 40 years) for someone to invent a good vessel to carry the CD. I have the same Tool CD. "bootleggy things" Cheers!
I should have mentioned that I have some of those Japanese CD cases that look like mini LPs with an inner sleeve. Those don't irritate me too much and, because they are thin, they take up far less shelf space, which would probably be good for all of us!
I've had so many nightmare experiences wrecking CD booklets while trying to squeeze them back into the jewel case. Last year I junked hundreds of cases and now have probably two thirds of my CD collection in little plastic slipcases which works great for me. That Tool CD case with the 3D glasses is fantastic. I just listened to 'Discipline' by Crim the other night, in fact they're on my list for next year as I really only now a handful of their records. CDs are still cool.💿
Hi James, Yes, CDs are still cool! A friend of mine also discarded his cases, but he did it almost 30 years ago. I guess he was ahead of the curve 🙂 I am not sure I ready to do that, but I guess it is an option.
Hey Brian, I, too, have that Vertigo sampler and included in my video. Great 2 Tone comp!
Thanks, Fitz. I enjoyed your video and the Vertigo Sampler!
Very jealous of the number of record stores you have. I’m in a one record store town and it’s 500 miles to the next one.
We are extremely lucky in Toronto. There are even some stores here that I have never even visited! I should probably do that 🙂
@ Wow, rub it in, why don’t you. At Christmas too! And you come across as such a nice person in your videos. :)
Maybe I am not sue a nice person after all 🙂
Murder Ballads was a worrying answer Brian (HP) 😂 Same as you with Beatles v Stones, but Zep was out of left field. I thought Lenard would make more than one appearance! 😁 Great engaging answers as usual. Mike
Hi Mike! It's so nice to hear from you. I was worried about you, but maybe not as worried as you were about Murder Ballads 🙂
Well done Brian. Some Embryonic head scratchers here that we’ve come to love and expect. That Enigma collection looks really good.
Ha ha. The Enigma thing is pretty cool!
Great comps. I love that This Are Two Tone comp! Such great tunes on that album!
I agree. This Are Two Tone is great, or should I say This Are Two Tone are great? 🙂
Loved your sad bastard vinyl tag! Great job Brian!
Thanks, Todd! This was a good tag 🙂
The brain thing you mentioned is an issue for me as well. My wife would be the first to agree. Your presentation however was flawless on this one. The vertigo sampler from 1985 is a must seek for me. I did indeed pause and checked it out on discogs and it can be had for about thirty bucks. Anything Kurt Vile is gold for me. I don’t recognize that album cover so will need ensure it’s on my list. Great entry… posting mine shortly.
Thanks for saying flawless. I disagree, but I appreciate it! You will enjoy the Vertigo sampler 😀
I thought you were in the international space station for a moment at the start ! I don’t have a lot of compilations like you - but can dig a few out to enter - and yes I have lots of days when my mouth and brain don’t gel !
I would really like to go to the international space station 🙂
I wasn't familiar with the AA Records compilation, but it sounds interesting. The Two-Tone comp is pretty good, with a great roster of artists. I picked up the "Intended Play LP" over the summer at a flea market for a couple of bucks. It was worth it. Cheers
Thanks Mark! This video made me realize that I rarely buy comps, which now makes no sense 🙂
That's most days for me HP. You can send me the abrasive noise record. I love that shit. Sarah McLachlan & Skinny Puppy were on the same label!?! My mind is blown. That was a lot of comp's considering your claim of not having many comp's. Sweet work man. Cheers...Ben
Sarah M and Skinny Puppy should have done a collab! I would have bought it 😀
@@EmbryonicRobot It would be wild!
Canada is such a small country.. industrial and folk pop singers have to share the same record label!
@@LowNoiseJasonSkilz That’s funny because I’m guessing we would be a similar size but I can’t think of those extremes being in the same local label. Maybe this big ones that just sign anything that will sell.
@benrankins4446 I think they were aiming hard at the US market for that label
Interesting comps there! I know it was a while ago, but a $2 double LP is pretty mind-blowing. 😂 Even though comps aren't as important anymore for discovering new bands I have a soft spot for them. Cheers Brian!
This contest might prompt me to buy more. I have passed over some really good deals in the past!
“I’ve been unable to say things in a normal manner”…”I’ve chosen 9 LPs for this contest”…”Most normal people are not going to enjoy this record”…In honor of that recommendation, I will pull the vacuum from the closet and let it idle for half an hour. I have never seen that Vertigo sampler outside of my own collection. I remember buying it in high school! It’s really excellent, but you know this. “I wonder if MGK has this” 😊…that Two Tone thing looks cool. Nettwerk was a cool label. I even have a 12” single by Moev. Ahead by Wire is their best song. ✌️
I hope you enjoyed the vacuum! I found out, via this video, that the Vertigo sampler was only ever released in Canada. I had no idea. Ahead by Wire is fabulous, but my fav Wire track might be Ambitious! Normal people will love that track 🙂
Dang time flies! Love your entry Brian. Somehow seeing you with a Ramones anything… surprised me? Silly me. Leonard, Norway loves him. As I’ve told you. Just letting you know I’m paying attention 😊 I know what you mean, I won’t claim to know what Jason, Kim or Tommy talks about most of the time, but love those guys so I watch all the same 😊 Cheers and God Jul from Morten
I remember that Norway loves Leonard! Norway has good taste. Merry Christmas to you, too!
@ Thank you Brian 😊
Nice response Brian 💯. I think a visit to your place pouring through the collection would be more fun than any record store 😉. I have notta one of anything you picked. 🎉
My prices are higher than a record store 🙂 Thanks, Greg.
Hey Brian, I have an odd compilation released by a Toronto furniture store in the early 2000’s it features mostly unknown punk bands and indie acts I’ll show it if/when I launch my own VC channel. I’ve been looking for This Are 2 tone since my friend owned it when we were 13 and listened to it constantly
A Furniture store comp! I would have thought that the band Furniture would be on it 🙂 Of course, you should start a channel 👍
Morning Brian, great entry, I have that Vertigo comp, love it… Many other good ones including the one on Nettwerk Music Group based in Jack’s neck of the woods & after checking is still very active… Have a great weekend 🎶✌🏼
Thanks, Olivier. I realized after that I missed one interesting comp in my video. Oh well...
@ That happens to all my friend 🎶🎶🎶
I just knew you'd show a 'noise' comp! There's a couple you showed that I have - the Weill one and the Woody Guthrie/Leadbelly, the latter a big deal at the time with its exclusive Bruce and U2 tracks.
Ha ha. I might have to purge that noise comp!
By Golly Brian, Torontos Thrift Shops stock some seriously interesting vinyls! I have the Two Tone comp and I would call that beautiful "orangey" disc Amber/Honey coloured...looks good enough to eat!
I'd say that the local thrift shops used to have interesting vinyl, but no longer. It's all garbage now 😔
@@EmbryonicRobot Sadly, one of the side effects of the vinyl revival is the demise of finding those bargains....which of course satisfies the hunter gatherer in us all...!!
Hey Brian. For someone who claims he doesn’t have many comps, you sure didn’t disappoint. I don’t own any of the ones you showed. Not sure I’d pick up a “noise” compilation though. Folkways comp for the win. Thanks for the great entry. Your name goes in the Seahawks hat for the draw. Cheers buddy.
No one need to pick up that noise comp! 🙂 Maybe I should sell it! Median price on Discogs is about $12. I could buy lunch one day!
If even you are unsure about the first record, I would be safe in saying that I won't be looking for it. I am a sucker for compilation albums, especially for obscure artists. The Vertigo sampler seems to have a lot of good cuts. I would probably pick up that Two-Tone comp even though I probably have a lot of the songs. I was actually listening to Madness last night. I have that Lost In The Stars album but it has been a while since I played it. I will have to spin it soon. I also have the A Vision Shared album as well and I really like many of the versions. Cheers.
Hi Randy, I just realized that the Vertigo sampler was only ever released in Canada. That might be a good reason to come back to Canada! 🙂
Brian, great video my friend. I gotta get on this for Handsome Jack! The Vertigo sampler is jam packed wow! 🤘🏼
You must have a few good ones 😎👌🏼
Hi Anthony, I am sure you must have some great comps!
I can help you with the pronunciation of the city of AA Records. Ypsilanti pronounced: ips-a-lan-tee. A suburb of Ann Arbor. I definitely remember that Nettwerk comp. Great selections Brian!
Yeah, that's it! I'll have to go to Ypsilanti one day 🙂
Some interesting collections, Brian! I may have to take part in this one myself.
You should! I am sure you have some gold to show 🙂
