I never forgot about this record - I never heard of it before. What an interesting concept - a record confronting the post-modern world we live in. Who knows what is real? It kind of reminds me of Gentle Giant's "Interview" album. Thanks for the recommendation Brian!
Thanks for this. I'm totally surprised I'd never seen or heard of the album until now. It seems like something that would have been in CFNY's wheelhouse back then, but I have no memory of them playing it. It's weird how it escaped my attention all this time, considering how closely I followed that genre back in the day. Thanks again . I really enjoy your channel.
I don't think I ever heard in on CFNY, but I could be wrong. I was a dedicated listener in 1986, so I would probably remember. Thanks for the nice words! 👍🙂
For the longest time I thought Rubert Hine was a member of the Fixx. I thought this all through the 80’s with Reach the beach / Phantoms and Walkabout. On the cover of walkabout I looked at first picture and just remember thinking ok first picture is Rupert hine. (I also thought what a bummer no artwork by George Underwood) when I figured out it was Rupert Greenall I was thinking huh?! So now with thinkman, I never heard of them. I am playing now on TH-cam and the first time hearing Rubert Hine (song best adventures ) sounds very much like cy curnin of the fixx. I added this one very quickly to my want list. Thanks for the intel/ great video.
every time people mention Rupert Hine i always instantly think they’re talking about the Pina Colada song dude. hahah. Interesting stuff brian. when you started off by saying your favorite album of the 80s i was sure you were gonna finally give Corey Hart some long overdue attention. Hahah.
Right - the other Rupert! Being from Canada, you have no idea how many times I have heard his songs. To make matters worse, like every Canadian, I do have a couple of his records. Why?
I've been into Rupert Nine for 30+ years. Even his first record is great. Some awesome folks psych tunes on that one. The Formula is great. Very catchy. I had this on cassette first and wore it put on my Walkman. Thank you for this!
Terrific review! I never knew the story behind “the band”, I just bought it on cassette(I LOVED it!) because I recognized Hine from the Fixx. My search continues for the record album.👀
Rupert Hine is a big name! Even just what you mentioned verbally covers much more than I was aware of. That’s very interesting that you are sharing his recording history as a musician. So that is actually a solo album. Very interesting approach to creating an album!
Interesting story, Brian. I've never listened to Thinkman. I notice on the Thinkman collection, Fighting Apathy with Shock, the hype sticker reads, "Rupert Hine as Thinkman.: I had a friend in university who lent me albums that I still cherish to this day, too. Now I am off to find more Thinkman videos!
I do have a copy of that album. Probably picked it up in a dollar bin. In fact, I was going through some dollar records at a store today, and I spotted another copy. I shall have to dig it out of the shelves and give it a listen.
What a strange story. As soon as you showed the back cover I thought "that guy looks just like Julian Clary". Now I know why😁 I only know Rupert Hine through Quantum Leap and their big The Line Ranger. Interesting video Brian.
Wow, really interesting. This would be a person I should have somehow come across, but I can’t say I remember. Of course several of the bands/artists he has produced are, not least The Thompson Twins and Howard Jones. I have added some of these records to my want list on Norwegian Craigslist (Finn), be fun to explore this. Seems right up my alley. Thanks Brian!
@@EmbryonicRobot This seller wants 40 kr ( 5 .- CAD) for solo albums and 50 ( 6.50.- CAD) for them. Might be worth looking into? Don’t know what he’ll demand for shipping… I’ll think about it (maybe check out my local second hand shop first).
Nice review Brian. Sounds like you had a useful college friend. I don't know the band or Hind but I'll see if I can stream Thinkman. Julian Clary started out as probably the first significant transvestite comedian in the UK. He billed himself as The Joan Collins Fanclub and would always appear in the company of a poodle. Chris Thompson played guitar on Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds'.
Hi James - Mike (Mikes Vinyl Spiral) also mentioned that he is familiar with Julian Clary. He must be a local phenomenon. Anyway, thanks for supplying those details. I feel far more informed now!!

If Pete is a similar personality to you, we would’ve some big laughs. “The formula is a concept album about mass media”…”It’s not a strange thing to do when you think about it”…” I’m maybe the best person to interpret lyrics”…”Etc, etc”….✌️
A time machine would be pretty awesome. I have a lot of things I need to do back in the past with such a machine, but a party with you and Pete back in the day would be extraordinary. I was too far away to have heard CHEZ, but it sounds like it was the real deal!
I do not know this band or Rupert Hine HP. I know Julian Clarey though. My excuse is that I'm Australian and also have never owned any of those records he produced on that long list. Stewart Copeland is a great drummer to have as his session guy. I will have to check this dude out if the HP recommends 👍
I don't know how I could have forgotten that record when I never seen it before lol. Oh great, another record I have to look into, one I have to add to the already long list. I knew that Hine had produced a lot of records, and I knew of a few of his projects, but that's even more than I was aware of. Busy guy. So busy that he made a fake band lol. But are they really fake if there are people performing. Thus you have kind of the same quandary as you do with Gorillaz, the first Internet-created band made up of fake band members, but there are actually people making the music (including Damon Albarn from Blur who is the brains behind it all). You probably know all that already, but I say all that because this kind of stuff fascinates me, but its even more interesting when the music is great. Cool subject matter. Nice discussion.
I still have not heard anything from Gorillaz, but I am familiar with the project. I should get on that. I think there is too much music in the world. I need to find a way to extend my life to about 150 🙂
Brian, Rupert Hine was not a lazy guy and any friend of Kevin Ayers, is a friend of mine. Nonetheless, I still confuse him with Rupert Holmes. The lyrics are thought provoking, they sound like Roger Waters lyrics, circa ''The Wall'' and his subsequent solo ventures. Obstoj sounds like she's less ''paranoid'' and more optimistic than Waters, however they both seem to yearn for a new Utopia.
That's an intriguing comparison with Roger Waters and one that had not occurred to me, but I see where you are going. Less paranoid seems right though!
Switch off the set That could have a second meaning considering that he sings about interviews being vehicles for propaganda. The “set” could also be in a theatrical sense where the theater is the mass media and the set is what’s on the stage to influence our opinions. Though I’m sure he meant TV set.

Well, I learned something else. I have never heard of Gentle Giant's "Interview" album! Who knows what is real indeed 🙂
Some of the greatest music and talent go unrecognized. Thanks for sharing this little gem of a record.
So true. And, sometimes, the big acts aren't really that interesting 😆
@@EmbryonicRobot 😂
This is all new to me, Brian. Thanks for the great review and background on the “band”.
I have Pete to thanks. I am sure I would otherwise have never encountered this album, but I guess you never know!
I had no idea, will be looking up Rupert Neville Hine… Love the video Best Adventures, 80’s New Age Vibes 😎 Thanks for sharing Brian 🎶✌🏼

It is probably a unique approach. I guess the only other thing that comes to mind is Milli Vanilli, but that was more of a fraud, I guess.
