Very cool to look at, Brian. I can count on one hand the number of picture discs I have- if even that many! Maybe the sound of them has come a long way, as you say. I'm with Anthony: every home needs a robust selection of The King! 😎🎶
I just got some confirmation that modern picture discs do sound better than vintage ones. I still will probably not seek them out. I have a very modest Elvis collection. I guess that is sad...
Nice collection, and love that Dazzle Ships one (that's a record I've yet to hear, though I've been spinning Architecture & Morality again recently). I have hardly any picture discs; one I do have is the Giles Martin remix of Sgt Pepper which is still in the shrink for posterity (and consequently I've still never heard it!).
I love this kind of stuff! I've never seen that record store day Devo record before. I would love that Numan The Plan, too. I'm currently working on a future hit song called, Tea-Stained Cadillac.
Good idea for a video Brian - I really dislike picture discs but I bet I’ve got more than I realise ! Those plastic sleeves are still being used to this day for some reason !
It turns out that I have more than I thought. I guess they are hard to avoid. I used to dislike coloured vinyl thinking that they didn't sound as good. But, I think they generally sound OK, to my ears at least 🙂
Hello Bryan! It's my first time on your channel! Stumbled upon this thread today after I saw Tommy's Vinylnauts response to this. I was thinking about making a response too, it's gonna be my first vinyl community video in 6+ years, lol! I'm planning to drop the video on Sunday!
Hey Brian! Ah…picture discs- a vinyl format nemesis, for sure. I have that same Numan The Plan pic disc and I think the Elvis one as well- I’ll have to check. I have 2 of the Cure RSD pic discs and the sound seems alright, tbh. That OMD live release sounds super interesting! Cheers-R
Good to hear that the Cure picture discs sound OK. It seems like they issue a picture disc first and then the black vinyl. I guess these are a good money maker!
You have a nice collection of picture discs. I only have five and 4 are 78's (Yes they had some picture discs in the 40's). My other one is Marilyn Monroe. The Bauhaus one looks pretty cool and I like the clock on the OMD release. Of course, I would like the Springsteen and Elvis releases. Glad the Springsteen single sounds good.
Nice subject that needed to be answered with video. You're such a trend setter! I have also one shaped 7" that have other side turned brownish. I 1st though that is from home where they have smoked or sun turned the vinyl brown... but when I bought 2nd copy it had same problem. Lucky that doesn't affect the sound. The picture discs I have sounds still great - but never compared those to basic vinyl. Too bad they don't fully take advantage of picture disc. Usually the B-side is same than in album cover, but texts are hard to read... I liked that dazzle picture disc. It was done right!
I have a handful of pictures discs. I treat them as collector items for my favorite bands and rarely play them. I hate the ones that just come in the PVC sleeve; it is such lazy "packaging." They are fun to look at, so perfect for a video. 😄 Cheers Brian!
I have a few picture discs. According to Stuntrock Confusion, who was a part owner of a pressing plant, the new picture discs are better than the ones from years past. In fact, one side is actually the same as a normal record. The other side has shallow grooves. According to Stunty, Jack White has been financing a new technology for picture discs that will sound as good as a normal record.
This is really useful information about picture discs. I had no idea that there were shallow grooves only on one side on modern discs. I hadn't heard about Jack White's venture either. Sounds very interesting!
HP, that's a lot of picture discs. If I did this it would be lucky to go for 1min 30secs. The few I have, I bought before I knew any better about their sound. They do look cool so maybe one day I'll buy some stands and display them like plates. I'm sure my wife will love that idea. What happened to your pink Cadillac? I'll leave you with this profound piece of philosophy: "Frankie says Relax"
I forgot that I was going to include the two records that my daughter owns: Frozen and The Lady and the Hound! Oh well, it's probably better to have left them out 🙂
Apropos when it comes PVC sleeves and Frankie Goes To Hollywood! Don’t Do It! 😂 Yeah PVC will jack your records up. Throw all those sleeves in the trash. I have 2 picture disks, Beatles Magical Mystery Tour and Bowie Ziggy Star Dust. Oh and yes dare I say I have the Tony Bennett with Lady Gaga picture disk 😂. Cool clock picture disk. Cheers Brian.
Don’t all records have a shape to them? That Devo album looks very cool. I own some picture discs but I think I’ve only bought one BECAUSE it was a picture disc. The others were because it was my only option If an album “ghosts” you, does that mean it ignores you? Very cool Springsteen collectibles. I’m surprised you like Bruce. I mean, I know you like that Cockburn guy, but I just assumed that was strictly because he’s a Canadian and you’re such a homer. Great collection!
Hey Gary, I need to have you on retainer to review all of my videos before I post them so that I do not say anything illogical. I think you are right: all records have a shape to them! You may be surprised to hear this, but I am a Springsteen completist ... and also a Cockburn completist. The only LP I am missing is the new Springsteen Greatest Hits package! Maybe this simply means that I just like musicians named Bruce 🙂
“I try not to buy them”…”I assumed they were going to sound terrible. Maybe they don’t”…I do like the look of that Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Pretty cool. “Why would they redo them? Who knows?”…”Here’s something from Gary Numan”…I should say your fashion sense in this video mirrors Gary Numan! Maybe a little more casual, but still. “I may not even keep it”…”You can’t even find it”…” I should play them”…I have no picture discs, but this video was entertaining. ✌️
You have no picture discs? How is that possible? "I should say your fashion sense in this video mirrors Gary Numan! Maybe a little more casual, but still." That is a quotable moment! 🙂
I was going to ask you how these sound but you answered that question. You buy these more as collectible than for listening purposes. I have a few and I can’t say I ever play them.
Brian, please remove the albums from their sleeves. It looks like the discoloring is from the sleeve on the Bruce Springsteen disc. What a cool Gary Newman disc.
The The The "Dogs Of Lust" is a nice collectible. The Gary Numan is a beauty too. Really nice stuff Brian~
Rob/Boston
Thanks, Rob. I agree! 🙂
Cool collection of picture discs. I think the last one you showed was the best one - I like the tea stain. Thanks for showing the records!
Tea stain for the win!
I like the OMD ones and the fact Gary Numan is looking the other way 👍
You picked the best ones 🙂
I don't have that many picture disc's and I try not to buy them as well. My favorite is David Bowie's The Man Who Sold The World ! Watching now..
I thought I didn't have many either! They just seem to show up in my collection!
Between you and and I.. We would have a great record shop. Only problem, we're not selling ! Haha😁
Ha ha. It might be a good way to part with the records when the time comes!
Right.. When the impending time comes 🤨
Hey Brian. Great video and collection of picture discs! Something that I only own a few of. Love Gary Numan! Cheers
Thanks, Bobby. I have to admit that picture discs are cool to look at 🙂
That long version of 'The Power of Love' is gorgeous. I just have it on CD though. Probably preferable to a pic disc! 😃
I agree on both counts! 😀👍
Good to see you Brian! I don’t have many picture disc either. The sound has improved though. All Elvis is Good Elvis Brian! C’mon Amigo! lol 😆 👊🏻
"All Elvis is Good Elvis." I'll keep that in mind! I only have a handful of Elvis records, so I should change that 🙂

@@EmbryonicRobot A modest Elvis collection is better than no Elvis. I'll take it!

Dazzle Ships is quite a departure from Architecture & Morality! I was surprised that I had this many in my collection. I may not get anymore 🙂
I love this kind of stuff! I've never seen that record store day Devo record before. I would love that Numan The Plan, too. I'm currently working on a future hit song called, Tea-Stained Cadillac.
Tea-Stained Cadillac will be a smash pop hit, but Pee-Stained Cadillac could be a punk classic!

@ yep no issues with colour vinyl here either

I agree that collector's item is the best way to think about picture discs. I am irritated when an album is only on a picture disc, though 🙂
I only have 1 picture disc and its "let it be" by the beatles. those last 2 look really cool i didnt know that they could even come in shapes!
