Hard Luck Woman was by Rod Stewart. You know, maybe he should cover it. CDs kind of made many albums way too long, if you ask me. Poor MMJ. They should come to Canada and do the outdoor New Year's Eve show downtown. That would be the exact opposite ❄️

It wasn't until last year that I actually started seeking them out. I rarely listen to them, though. Just kind of cute novelty items. Your EP collection seems to have a more serious vibe. I didn't even know that the Beatles had released any EPs until I "joined" the VC. That's how out-of-touch I am with the Beatles 🙂 I am curious to see what Beatles EPs you have 👍
The great EP debate continues. Extended Play I think implies a single but longer. But then we have to decide at what point a single becomes an EP. But at the other end when does the extension bring it into mini album territory. And then when does the mini album become a fully fledged album. Is a single that plays at 33 necessarily an EP, Is an album that plays at 45 a mini album. Sometimes we are helpfully told that it's an EP but does this lead to inconsistencies? Is a three track single an EP or just a single with an extra track. Is a 4 track single always an EP. We shall never know🤔
Great video Brian! As someone that almost never does their homework I admit that 90% of the EPs I have bought were bought thinking they were full albums. A simple review of the track list would have fixed this, but I have a tendency to see the band name and an album title U’m unfamiliar with a just run with it to the cash register. Most of the time this is a happy accident and I’m not disappointed. I tend to be more disappointed when it’s a CD rather than vinyl…no real explanation as to why that is. Anyway. MUDCRUTCH!!! I had forgotten about them! Thx for the reminder and excellent video!
I have bought a few EPs think that they were LPs. But, I have never been to upset about it. That live Mudcrutch EP is pretty good. I have only one of their albums (on CD). I guess I should find the other.
I seem to recall some definitions saying an EP tends to be 4-6 songs, so maybe a combination of number of songs AND shorter play time more qualifying what is called an EP. I've always understood EP (Extended Play) being slightly more that a single as you hinted to. A single tended to contain 2 songs, and was a shorter time play (the limits of the 7" usually applies), and then an EP was usually at least twice as many songs and time. I guess questionable area in such consideration would be like maybe punk bands with short songs, who could fit like 4-6 songs on a 7" - so I would think that total time of the release would weight heavily on such a scenario. I guess more modern scenarios like these came about probably way after the typical titles and standards were created.
I think we need to work towards an ISO standard for EPs! But seriously, this is so confusing. It's like anything goes. Anyway, I once thought I knew what an EP is, and now I am not so sure 🙂 I think punk bands know what's going on 🙃
I only have two modern 10” EPs. The Replacements RSD of Pleased To Meet Me and U2 live at some stadium lol. I’ll never understand what goes through a record companies mind when deciding hey let’s release an oddball format of this awesome music that people would enjoy more on a 12” record. I just can’t wrap my head around. I only have mine because they came very cheap in collections I bought in the past. Although I have a shit ton of 10” 78s from the 40s and 50s lol. 😆

My Morning Jacket can do no wrong. Sleep's "Jerusalem" only has one song but the record is 30-40 minutes long. Is it an ep? It fascinates me that people from other countries will use "inches" to talk about records. And only the US will use the metric system when it comes to bullets. Who made who? Gotta get this Holdsteady record! You haven't heard "I Gotta Get Drunk"! I have that one live. It's a cool song. I definitely understand small town frustration. 😌 Alot of hanging out in the woods. I remember when I first went to England. For some reason, I assumed that the UK was a metric nation, but everything was imperial. Canada is very weird because temperature is in Celsius, speed is in KM/hour, weight (personal and grocery) is in ounces and pounds, height is in feet and inches (but in centimetres on your driver's licence), fabric is in meters, lumber is in feet and inches. It's a mess. At least Start Trek uses metric. Personal, I think 9mm sounds better than 0.35 inches 😀 There were a lot of field parties back in the day. Bonfires! I'm still trying to understand the EP format.
That does sound like some long EPs. Nashville Skyline was the first short-length album I thought about. I do have a few EPs but not necessarily a format I look for. I think that I am even more confused now and not sure I would know one if I saw one now unless they tell me. I have been meaning to get a Hold Steady record as I do have a track downloaded and quite like it. I don't think that I have seen that Pete Townshend record before. You have quite the collection.
Hi Brian, playing catch up on your last few videos. I thought exactly the same a few times on EPs and short full lengths. I consider Ep’s as high a priority as a full length for that reason with the exception of albums like the one you showed for national youth. For some reason I avoid 10 inches even though some maybe just as long as 12 inch. I am so confused. Regardless great picks

Interesting Brian. Those are formats I am largely less than knowledgable about. In fact anything in the 10" sizerange I usually avoid, as it doesn’t quite… fit anywhere. So, I think I have… 6? 3 of them Stones, 1 Altered Images, 1 Tears for Fears and 1 Pixies?
You are right about 10" records. I don't file them with the 12" records because that seems wrong, so I have a separate crate for them. It is an awkward format!

While it doesn't say that "Chocolate & Ice" is an EP on the album itself, pretty much everywhere I've looked says that it is an EP, so I've always just thought of it as that. The definition you gave from Wikipedia seems like a great explanation, as timing doesn't seem to matter anymore. The Nash the Slash EP sounds quite like something that I would be interested in. Here is another wrench to throw into the mix....when is it considered a Maxi-single and not a regular single or an EP....Hmmmm. That should keep you up all night now. I think you are correct about the GY!BE record, that the extra tracks on the 10" is just part of the album on CD. I have a different GY!BE that does the same thing, and it gives you the order to play the sides on the inner sleeve, since you don't just flip the 12" over to experience the sequence of the original album. Are you confused yet? I'm going to have to do a reply to this thread, I guess. I'll just leave off the 12" singles that I have shown recently. I might throw in a couple of EPs I have on CD too. That Peter Murphy EP looks quite interesting too. I had no idea Robert Plant did an EP...cool. Love this topic! There is just something about the informality of EPs that I just love.
I've come to the conclusion that some things are simply unknowable, and we may never have answers to these important questions. How will I sleep tonight? But, I am interested in what you might have in your collection!

It is, as is all of his stuff. I think he was massively underrated, or maybe he was just too bizarre to be commercially successful.

Those are some cool colored vinyl. It is strange what and what isn't an EP a lot of beach boys albums are less then 20 minutes each and they arnt EPs
