I'm such a novice when it comes to EPs. The only ones I own are from The Beatles and one from my old band, Henry C. Cobb and Banjo Joe. And those are all 7". But I love your collection! I would be happy with any one of these, but especially The Pogues, REM, Joy Division, and Skinny Puppy.

Hi Rob, I can wholeheartedly recommend Beaster 🙂 I keep meaning to add some more Bill Nelson to my collection, but something else always takes precedence. I'll take the plunge next time I see some of his stuff. I do like what I have heard.
Neat way to some stuff, Brian. I have more straight up 12" singles than I do actual EP's. I've showed a few before in videos past, but they just might need to be shown together all at once at some point! Neat Beaster Promo Pack - I have both Copper Blue and Beaster on CD, but that vinyl double set release looks great. Joy Division 'Substance' on CD I have as well. Nice!
Hi Ed: For some reason, I have a ton of 12" singles and EPs. I never really took to the 7" format, I guess. Maybe I should have, but it's far too late now! Looks like you and Mark at Mad4Vinyl have that area covered 🙂
Love the Billy Bragg EP! Cool that you got to meet him a few times! Just subbed to your channel! Enjoyed your video and looking forward to watching more!
30 minutes? Wow! I thought it went up to 20 personally. Don't get me started on politics right now. Let me just say the U.S. can continued to embarrass itself for the last three cycles. I would love to hear a modern Billy Bragg ep. right now. "Chronic Town" is wonderful. I don't think they ever put out anything bad. I'll be showcasing Shriekback on my show pretty soon. Love that band. I have the "All Lined Up" ep. I grew up on Skinny Puppy. The first time I realized they were Canadian I thought to myself, "How can something this disturbing come from that country?" "Beaster" is really great. Everything Bob Mould is worth a listen. Punk is all about the 45. Even to this day. One of the few genres to continue making wax throughout the 90's (the other being jazz). Great showing! Gonna keep an eye out for the Joy Division record 😅. Cheers!
Shriekback! I am looking forward to that. Skinny Puppy sounds like the opposite of Canada! I think I was also surprised when I found out they were Canadian. I think punks bands have the right idea. Short and to-the-point recordings with no filler!
I'm so happy to see you do this, you have so many great albums, and I've felt you have had quite a few EPs that weren't getting the attention they deserve. it's always hard to figure out how to determine an EP, but the length of time doesn't necessarily mean its an EP. Sufjan Stevens has an EP that's 59:15 long ... "All Delighted People". I think it just depends on what the artist or label says is an EP. Anyway, I'm a big fan of EPs because it usually means it's not a typical album, and sometimes, EPs end up being better than a lot of certain artist's albums. Of course, the GY!BE is one of my favorite EPs and actually ranks as listener's choice as best EP (which tends to fluctuate with Alice in Chains "Jar of Flies") on RYM. Love Chronic Town, of course, who doesn't. Had that one once, but not now 😭 I want that Dukes of Stratosphear. I think that's extremely expensive now. I want the Skinny Puppy too. I want I want I want. I wanted The Pixies "Come on Pilgrim" too, and look where it got me....I got one Yay! Cool EPs, I'll take them all! As soon as I find $10,000
A 59:15 EP! That just reminded me about one that I forgot. My Morning Jacket's Chocolate and Ice so-called EP is 40:35! How can that be? I guess it because of the lengthy last track, but still. The world of EPs is a mess. There ought to be rules. I could also use $10,000 🙂
@@EmbryonicRobot There are several Depeche Mode 12" singles and/or EPs that are around an hour long. There are also several that have only one track that last close to or over an hour. Then there is that famous 3 track, 6 hour EP by The Flaming Lips, but does that really count since it's only available digitally...hmmm
Lovely stuff. I did something similiar . I definately had Chronic Town. My all time favourite is 'You Made Me Realise 'Ep by MBV. I was lucky to buy it week of release .but I imagine outside the UK its $200.00 plus Its really perfection. I cheated on mine a bit I included Minor Threats 2x7" mini album, Husker Du's 'Metal Circus" which I think plays at 45? & Wires 'Play Pop' which is awesome. The best records are 15 minutes & contain 5 tracks!
Of course, afterward, I realized I left a couple of good ones out. The MBV is awesome. I wish I had a copy. With an EP, there's not much room for filler! 15 minutes is probably about right 🙂
Brian, good video with interesting choices. I don't think that I have heard the Shriekback EP. Discogs has it listed as an LP, so that means that I have their 2nd album, Care. I have not seen that Sugar twofer before, as I just have separate CDs. I don't recognize the Joy Division cover. I have a 1988 Greek bootleg. Interesting, and thanks, Chris
Hi Chris - I have noticed that Discogs sometimes gets things wrong. At other times, I get things wrong, so maybe we balance out 🤭 I used to have an unofficial pressing of that Joy Division EP, way back when. I always wonder how I can lose track of albums, but living in residence at a university did cause me to lose some records 😡
Nice selection, I don't think I've seen any of these EPs. I only have a few in my collection, in fact I could probably show them all in one video. My turntable won't play at 45rpm without a good kicking, so I tend not to buy EPs unless there's something very special about them. I've never heard Sugar and have no Husker Du though I do have two Bob Mould solo records which I found in good will amazingly.
Bob Mould at Good Will! That is astonishing. I do love a good and cheap find. I do like EPs if the tracks are otherwise unavailable, which isn't always the case. One thing that does surprise me is artists releasing EPs in this era. I am thinking of Billy Idol and Ringo. I wonder if they sell.
I should check out the Skinny Puppy reissues. I’m a big fan but only have them on CD. I was surprised when I found out they were Canadian. I’ve never listened to Sugar, Bob Mould or Husker Du albums after Zen Arcade. I’ve never seen that Joy Division record.
Th JD is a good one. Many people will say that the last 5 or 6 Bob Mould solo records all sound the same. There is something to that, though I still like them.

I think it’s hard to distinguish between albums and EPs sometimes because there are albums that only hit around 30 minutes!
Hi Peter - The funny thing is that I have some LPs that are sorter than 30 minutes and some EPs that are longer. It is bizarre. My fav Skinny Puppy record is Bites. I didn't follow them closely in the later years and now they have wrapped up the band. you may like Beaster from Sugar! I hope 🙂
@@EmbryonicRobot Just checking what’s on my phone. Looks like I have Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse from 1986 and Rabies from 1989. I remember two or three guys who wore trench coats and had wild hairstyles in my junior high school. They liked skinny puppy.
The "EP" definition is rough. It can be a short "album", or an "odds and sods" compilation. My favorite is probably Change of Seasons by Dream Theater, but it is over an hour long. 😂 One new song that is 22 minutes long, then some live cover versions. Cheers Brian!
Man how could I narrow to top 10 EPs?! That is a tough job. Skinny Puppy! Now that is the best Cad EP. Love Ogre's vocals. Love Billy Bragg too. Dont have that EP but great aong Help Save the Youth. I never got into Godpseed. Great vid man!
@@EmbryonicRobot Actually I would say the best Canadian EP is a punk band from the 80s.. almost pre-grunge band - Slow (from Vancouver) and Against the Glass EP
@@LowNoiseJasonSkilz I'll have to listen to that! Clearly, my brain is addled anyway, since I said that GYBE was the best Canadian EP, and yet I had Skinny Puppy higher on my list! Sometimes, I make very little sense 🙂
We just dug up The Smiths Ask 45 RPM maxi single in our last episode and it has 3 songs on it. Does that qualify as an EP? I know it says single but it has 3 songs on it. I have a copy of An Exciting Evening at Home with Shadrach, Meshach and Abendego by The Beastie Boys. It has 6 different songs on it and the cover says 12” Single. Confusing.
That's a really good question, and maybe it falls into a grey area. My strategy on this was that if the single/EP/Maxi-single has a track from a record that was released at around the same time, I excluded it because I felt that those are more 12" single than EP. Others may disagree! Confusing is right!
Really cool idea for a topic E.Brian. I don’t any of these (I grew up on wrong side of the tracks for hip college bands) but some of these look like they would fit into my collection. I’m guessing the MAGA crowd would not like Billy Bragg which makes me want to be a fan.
MAGA would certainly disapprove of Mr. Bragg! He is definitely a leftist. I am sure you would lke some of these hip college bands, given that you are hip yourself 🙂
@@EmbryonicRobot A true Democracy is majority rules. You could argue mob rule with no regards to minority groups or opinions. That is the purpose of the electoral college. It gives smaller and rural states a voice.
@@vinylrichie007 Yes, I have read this about the electoral college and it makes sense. (Our system up here is imperfect, but I am not sure anyone knows how to make it perfect or if that goal is even possible. That's above my pay grade, as they say 🙂)
@@EmbryonicRobot What I don’t understand about the Canadian system is the election process of the Prime Minister. It seems many are not happy with Trudeau. Yet there is no election.
The short answer is that Trudeau still has the support of a third party in the House of Commons. Had this not been the case, The Liberal Party would have lost the last vote of non-confidence and that would have triggered an election. However, there must be an election on or before October 20, 2025. He will have to call an election before then, or he could lose the next non-confidence vote. So, in any case, we are in for a federal election within the next 12 months. It does seem that the Liberals will lose the next election, but I guess you never know.
This is not gospel! How will we commenters deal with this? You know it's supposed to be set in stone, so the rest of us can tell you what you should've put on your list instead. Think of the trolls feelings HP. Wow if Billy could've seen into the future of American presidents. That orange bloke with the wild comb over makes Reagan seem mild. R.I.P. Shane 😢 Still hurts. GSYBE is that the one that has the spoken word piece with something about the machine is dying or something like that? Their first LP & the CD & the EP are confusing like the Split Enz record with stuff all over the place on your previous video or is it just me that's confused? Chronic Town is a killer. I will have to revisit Shriekback. I remember not being able to get into them at the time, but maybe I'm ready for it now. I really dig XTC, but having by coincidence just having listened to Dukes on the weekend, I would say that except for English Settlement, the Dukes are better than any XTC record. I'm saying that with a very high regard for XTC albums in general. That's how much I like the Dukes. Skinny Puppy!! Is that dudes back for real is what I've always wondered about the Come on Pilgrim cover. Perfect EP. Beaster is slightly better imho too. Both are amazing though. I've never seen that promo. Cool! There's an Ideal For Living on Discogs from Italy for a mere A$24,666.84 including postage. Seems reasonable, I might get it. Smooth moves HP. Cheers...KOF
The Lincoln Project just used a bunch of Reagan footage in an ad to take down Trump, and Reagan seemed sane and perfectly reasonable. It is so odd. In the Godspeed track, he is going on about the US government, the judicial system, guns, social order, etc. The Dukes really did outdo XTC. I hope to god that Come on Pilgrim model is wearing fake fur. But, there is probably men like that somewhere in this planet. Poor chaps. A$24,666.84! sounds like s steal!!! You should get it.

@musicisajourney Trenchcoats? Hmmm. Maybe I missed the fashion aspect of liking SP! I guess it's too late now 🙄😃
Chronic Town still sounds fresh, but then just about all of their music does. The price on the Joy Division EP is amazing.
I agree. REM really did excellent work! It still sounds contemporary and relevant!
The "EP" definition is rough. It can be a short "album", or an "odds and sods" compilation. My favorite is probably Change of Seasons by Dream Theater, but it is over an hour long. 😂 One new song that is 22 minutes long, then some live cover versions. Cheers Brian!
An hour long EP! We need an ISO standard for EPs 🙂
It was a tough task! Now, I wonder if I have made mistakes 🙂 I can see that Skinny Puppy being the best Canadian EP.
I think if a record is 30 minutes long it is an LP.
That is probably fair enough!
Hah hah, most of hardcore LPs are 15-30 long. So techically EPs, but of course there still could be tons of songs... So I prefer 7" Eps..
Yes! I know lots of punk is on 7", which I do not have, sadly. It's kind of the opposite of long prog tracks that go on and on and on ...
@@EmbryonicRobot Yeah, 7"s are the perfect format for hardcore punk.
Technically the US is a Republic not a Democracy.
Hmm, interesting point 🙂 Rome was a republic before it fell into a dictatorship . . .
@@EmbryonicRobot I will also get you the cheaper A$16,414.53 one as VCLT while they're still affordable👍
@@benrankins4446 Ha ha. Excellent!
Eps are mostly 4 track 7 inch records with picture covers. Extended 12 inches are just that and not eps.
Thanks for the comment. I have seen so many definitions, it is a bit confusing 🙂
