1979 is the year I would pick, too. A great Alex-type opening! We would have been great pals in 1979! I have/had almost all of the records you showed here. Which is rare! You are so sweet, Brian, describing the illustrations on The Fine Art of Surfacing as "swimming pictures." I think if you take another gander, you'll see them as bodies rising to the surface after drowning. That's what I've always took them for, anyway! Fun video, Brian!

Mark, You mean I was wrong all of this time? How could I have beens so wrong? On the other hand, you are right about 1979! I could have used a pal who liked the music I was into 🙂

The FAB POOS!!! Brian - this was awesome. I'm actually surprised by how many of these I have and absolutely love as well. I agree with basically everything you said about each of these records. That Regatta De Blanc album cover looks different.. were the Canadian pressings different? I'm a sucker for different covers so that was appealing. I still never see Max Webster here. Ever. I Don't Like Mondays truly is one of my favorite songs of all time (subject matter aside). It was also one of the only (and still is!) tragedies that was committed by a woman.. and when asked why? She simply said she didn't like Mondays. "The silicon chip inside her head". So much great stuff. Thanks for the kind words and the stories. You have been formally entered into the contest!

Alex - That is a interesting Police question. I am not sure, but I think there were covers with slightly different colours? Or, maybe just brighter highlights. Who knows? If you come to Toronto you can collect all of the Max Webster you need 🙂

Hey Brian, Regatta De Blanc is a brilliant album. I don’t listen to The Police as much as I used to, so might have a wee Police day today. I love The Wall. My dad introduced me to it and we watched the film as well. Good memories. I’ve heard some of the tracks from Drums & Wires but don’t think I’ve listened to the full album. Hi Brian. Great video! In 1979 I was 8 / 9 years old. My dad listened to news radio all the time and my mom liked Neal Diamond.
We had a home stereo one of those large console gargantuan all in one monstrosities with an eight track and turntable. I remember the Statler Brothers, sound of music and oak ridge boys were in the 8 track collection. That stereo was hardly ever utilized. Now as an old guy I think the year 1979 was a great year in music. Back then after looking at the top songs of 1979 I can only remember my cousin singing over and over again ring my bell by Anita ward and hearing my Sharona by the knack.

    • @EmbryonicRobot
      @EmbryonicRobot  หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi Shawn, I could never appreciate Mr. Diamond. I don't even know the lyrics to Sweet Caroline! We also had a console stereo, but my dad used it a lot, maybe too much. Ring My Bell - I hate it! And, now it is stuck in my head 🙂 My brother was a big fan of the disco queens and I was not, but I have mellowed a bit. I think som Donna Summer is actually OK, but not Anita Ward 🙃

Hey Brian. This was a nice little trip down memory lane and it was nice to hear what you were up to and listening to in 1979. Lots of cool stuff here. That Tom Petty album was also the first of his that I ever owned. I’m not a huge Max Webster fan but I am like you- I love that Let Go The Line song and that riff is so catchy, I just love it more than anything else they did. Breakfast in America was a huge record, but yes, not as good as Crime, in my option. Child of Vision is definitely the best on the album! In Through The Out Door is a unique LZ album with an interesting backstory but sadly it’s low on my list of Zep albums (probably the bottom, although I appreciate the contributions of John Paul Jones and Robert Plant on this one when Page and Bonham were more focused on drugs/alcohol). So many 1979 records! Great job Brian. You should get two entries from Alex for this one.

As it happens, I recently saw ''New Waves, Old Hands, And Unknown Pleasures: The Music Of 1979'' by Sean Egan in a bookstore which I did not end up purchasing, even though it seemed an interesting book. Great video as usual, every single album you showed is stellar! I discovered Prism and Max Webster on a local classic rock radio station when I was taking my 1st trip to Canada to see my relatives in the Niagara region. Breakfast in America is one these records I grew up with. It's funny how our tastes in music can change. Like you, I could name a lot of artists from my favorite years in music that I currently love that I never listened to back then. I didn't listen to XTC back then, but I did listen to Gary Numan and loved that album. I never really listened to Prism though I see their albums everywhere, but I loved everything about The Police. But it wasn't until Zenyatta Mondata came out that I was blown away by them. I loved Pink Floyd, of course, and bought The Wall the week it came out. I wasn't a big fan at first, believe it or not, but I have come to appreciate even it's operatic/dramatic sections. Petty and Blondie were both artists I loved and followed closely. Max Webster I knew nothing about, but i did love Kim Mitchell. It was a long time before I realized that was Mitchell's band. Madness I thought was kooky and not serious....I know better now. Always loved B-52's . Supertramp was my favorite band back then. And then, like you, I discovered Crime of the Century and it became one of the most formative albums in my life as far as developing my love of progressive rock. The Knack was an early love, but I got over them a bit quickly, especially after seeing them live. Others say they were very entertaining live, but they were quite stoic when I saw them. Squeeze, used to hate them, now they are an all time favorite band for me. Loved Joe Jackson's Night and Day and that got me interested in all of his music. Hated Elvis Costello, now I can't get enough of him. Candy-O was my first album by The Cars and played it to death. My brother loved AC/DC, and I didn't, I still don't lol. Except for Dirty Deeds. I'll probably have to pass on this one because I can't seem to pick out a favorite year.

The first track I heard from Zenyatta Mondata was De Do Do Do De Da Da Da and I was horrified. It took me a long time to even listen to that entire album, but now I like it. It's maybe second on my list of fav Police records. I listened to lots of duds in 1979, but I never owned them. You know, friends and relatives often have different tastes. And I could add another 100 albums I reckon. Also 2024 was the Toronto meeting of the minds!!! Having said that your selections are a pretty solid case for '79, except Supertramp of course 😂The Numanoid's Pleasure Principle has one of the best snare sounds recorded imho. The geography guy will get you every time. I can't remember where I heard it but recently I was informed that Tom Petty sings about what he doesn't want to do and the Ramones sing about what they wanna do. Compelling theory. Is AC/DC metal? I had to pay her”…”The guy I sat next to in Geography class kept talking about this so I bought it”…”I think he liked any band that had a female, at least a singer”… The GoGos, full of women” 😂 Every time I hear Let go the line by Max Webster it takes me back to our cottage on Redhorse Lake near Ganonoque. There was an AM station CKLC out of Kingston and I heard it all that summer. Great memories. Cool for Cats has a great music video. Love it.

All of the highlights once again! That's not my fav Robert Palmer record, though. I might choose Clues or Riptide. Anyway, he wasn't a bad singer. Or course, I forgot to mention ABBA when talking about my dad. More women that he liked. I have to watch the Cool for Cats video. I may not have ever seen it.

@@MGKBOSTON He was, but I would have been a happier child without ABBA!

I have a copy of Reproduction, but I got it much much later. I'm not sure I had even heard anything from that record at that time! Somehow, I missed it...

The best year in music to you is probably when you were about 15 or 16, whatever your age.

      Yes, that's probably true!

Hmmmm I’m thinking if you actually listening to all of these albums in 1979 and this isn’t some revisionist type of deal here, then you have to be at least 62.

62! Don't make me older than I already am! 😡 The only good thing about being 62 would be that I would be closer to retirement, which I am looking forward to 🙃

@ Welllll it’s kind of hard to picture a 14 year old listening to some of these selections 🤔

@vikingbrace That's one of the good things about having older siblings and friends with older siblings.

Forgot to mention that I have a brother who is ten years older than me! And a sister 5 years older and a other brother 2 years older (he passed away a couple of years ago).
I was always called the baby. I'm going to see if I can dog up a couple of interesting photos when I get home. You might enjoy them!
