It really shows how much music is out there in the world and is humbling when I observe how much of it I know nothing about. I do know the Ramones, Rush and L. Cohen though. 🤪Happy Holidays my friend.
It’s always a pleasure to hear about your selections and stories, Brian. Yours is the first 2025 Vinyl Tag I’ve seen, and it’s thanks to you I know about it! I liked your remarks at the end about favourite VC channel. My sentiments are pretty much the same.
Good morning Brian, great sit down once again… Ahhhh Leonard, a true local gem that will never be forgotten… Have you visited montreal since we have that beautiful mural of him? Beatles or Stones, Led Zep, love it… Well you tought me something about a local indie label I did not even know of, just visited their website and ready about Don Wilkie… Love that you always have Canadian artists amongst your faves including Bruce that I will spin this morning because of you. Thanks again, appreciated this time with you 🎶✌🏼
Brian, great responce on the tag, love your answer on the Beatles or the Stones. You had great answers to this, I will probably do this, but a little later, feels a little early to do it before the year is over. Cheers
Nice response Brian. This vinyl tag seems to me to be a little rushed, maybe to beat any competition. Surely the traditional way to do this is on New Years Day with a hangover😂 Cheers Mike 👍
Dang time flies! Love your entry Brian. Somehow seeing you with a Ramones anything… surprised me? Silly me. Leonard, Norway loves him. As I’ve told you. Just letting you know I’m paying attention 😊 I know what you mean, I won’t claim to know what Jason, Kim or Tommy talks about most of the time, but love those guys so I watch all the same 😊 Cheers and God Jul from Morten
Excellent responses, Brian! As usual, I saw some of my favorite artists mentioned, and some I'm not so familiar with. "Leonard Cohen was a ladies man." Say no more, my friend! Thanks for giving a near perfect response to Beatles or Stones.
Another great video.. I've had and loved that VU box set for awhile.. Love that Bauhaus LP, I have a few versions of it. RIP Leonard Cohen. I saw him a couple times.. sadly missed.
Hi Brian great to meet you. I really enjoyed your Vinyl Tag and awesome to see another Canadian. Didn’t expect the National’s Boxer for drum sound, but I get it. I regret not getting that Ramones box set on RSD. The Black Sea is one of my favourite XTC albums with Generals and Majors an all time classic for me. I subbed your channel and look forward to watching other videos.
Let the 2025 Vinyl Tag Race begin, and yours is the first I wanted to watch, Brian. Always enjoyable! I was fortunate to see Leonard Cohen live as well back in 2013 here in CT. Maybe I'll tackle this come January, but wanted to do my own little 2024 recap video first. Your VC fav channel response is spot on. 😎🎶
I had never listened to Rush so last year I streamed nearly the entire catalogue and was pretty impressed overall. You've reminded me I need to watch your video on Fear - good choice of 74 favourite! I always forget that Paris 1919 wasn't one of his Island records and that Fear was the first.
For years (and even quite recently), I would have said Sacrificial Bonfire. But, I am now convinced that it is Travels in Nihilon. I just love that track!
Hey Brian. Great video and picks! That Velvet box is amazing - I may need to track one down, if it’s even possible, or not overpriced! Love that John Cale album. Zeppelin! Rush, I picked up that remastered version as well, have an OG on CD. Cheers
Ramble on Brian - by the time you finish the tag might be in the right year! Good choices as ever - not got Vapour Trails on vinyl - one of my few Rush shaped holes to fill …
Great response Brian! I like Peter Murphy's Final Solution. I got that single recently. Cool looking Ramones box set! I dont have alot of their later 80s records. I would pick that up too. Leonard Cohen is a legend. Many great songs and poems.
@@EmbryonicRobot Ive never seen it - although I dont look at / look for box sets that much. I only have a few in my collection in total (that includes 3 box sets that are 7"s)
Brian, to your point VT always came out first week of January. This year everyone is trying to get one out earlier than the rest. A few years back there was only one tag, everyone did it. Now there are already 5 tags that have been released. Kind of crazy. Matrix box set is great, shocked that it is going for the much in Canada
The first year I made a tag video, there were competing vinyl tags. I guess that was not unusual. Maybe the VC needs a president to help organize the schedule!
Hey Brian. As always an enjoyable vid. Vinyl Tag already? It’s so early this year. I always looked forward to a New Year VC feast. C’est la vie right? I enjoyed the way you rationalised some of the rather ill conceived questions this year and turned them into an interesting conversation point - which you always do. Bauhaus - genre defining…absolutely! XTC - single after single, almost describes all of their albums to me. Being an 80s collector I agree with you about its importance as an era of music and would find it impossible to choose one album. Artist who appeared in two bands…did you consider John McGeoch? When you said you should consider another Canadian artist other than LC I honestly thought Daniel Lanois was going to get a run :) Cockburn is great as well. Thanks again for your vid I always enjoy the authenticity of what you bring. Have an enjoyable festive season.
I've always thought if it as a new year's thing, but I am open to change, I think! 🙂 John McGeoch is probably the most inspired choice anyone could make, and now I am wondering why Ii didn't think about that. I guess I went with the first person I thought about. Oh well ... Thanks very much for the nice comment and holiday wishes. I hope your holiday season is fabulous!
HP, you’re right about the vinyl tag, it’s usually in January. Apparently Rob has cracked it when appearing on some live stream about it being done in December. I’m glad I don’t get involved in live streams because a lot of times they devolve into high school bullshit. In the end who cares. You should do a video just of your pre-YT list ideas. You prude HP covering up Bahaus’ fur. A Rush record that’s terrible. Who would’ve thunk 😂 (I know you’re talking about the sound) 80’s comp’s have some of the best/worst covers. I challenge your Bob Mould live with Sugars The Joke Is Always On Us Sometimes live record. It rips! The National’s drummer is amazing! Not a fan of the very loose snare sound though, but that’s just boring drummer talk. I think it’s Beatles or the Stones because they were the first bands to have that kind of stratospheric fame I guess, but I agree with you. Why can’t the question be Devo or B52’s. 89 is still the 80’s 👍 Surprised you didn’t choose Motley Crüe though. Why bother to analyse something like Celine or Taylor. It’s a given. Honestly the average punter doesn’t care how live a show is, it’s all about the event these days. Even at our level we played with a band who had all of their vocals & instruments going through a laptop and their audience loved it & I didn’t hear anyone complain that they weren’t really live. I got that Ramones set 👍 It’s a fun set I think. I like Leonard’s lyrics better than Dylan’s. Lenny has an excellent sense of very black humour. He’s very funny when interviewed i think. I like how you want to be him, but then bring up a whole lot of reasons not to be him as well 😂 Pete Murphy top 5 of all time. I need to hear that record. HP you’ve nailed it again 🤘
I have heard that there was some drama about the tag. I suppose it will all resolve itself in due course. A video about my pre-YT ideas? That might actually work, but I might also be too lazy. The Bauhaus fur! I had a video age-restricted a while back, which meant that almost no one saw it. Censorship for the win. You are right: The Joke Is Always On Us Sometimes is excellent. Devo vs B52’s - I choose Devo. I guess if I paid hundreds for a show, I'd be irritated if it wasn't all live. I can understand a backing track in some cases. Ha ha. There is good and bad things about Leonard. Same is true with me, so maybe it would balance out!
I liked your responses here Brian. Beatles or Stones?..you show a Zeppelin album..brilliant!. I love those first two Pixies albums, Doolittle is fantastic but i love the more raw Surfer Rosa too. Black Sea is wonderful..i was late to the party with XTC then i discovered their Psychedelic alter egos, Dukes of Stratosfear and love them too. I need to listen to more of Leonard Cohens' later output..there's no doubt his talent is exceptional..i think he was well in his 30s when he released his first album, so it's like he had already had a career long before making records. All the best. Rob.
I agree; Surfer Rosa ia really great! I got into XTC when Drums and Wires came out. I've been following them ever since, but I was oddly late to the Dukes and I am not sure why. It's very strange 🙂
Great responses Brian! That VU boxset looks like a real beast... I think I've heard the material on it. I'll need to investigate further. Leonard Cohen was a great choice for someone you missed. I wished that I'd made more effort to see him live. One of my favourite songwriters, maybe just edged out by Dylan, but certainly wouldn't argue against anyone that preferred Leonard. There's not much between Bob, Lenny and Neil Young for me. The Holy Trinity. Cohen always comes across as a real gentleman in interviews. Also, like you say, his lyrics can be so funny. My favourite (funny) Lenny lines: I'd love to speak with Leonard He's a sportsman and a shepherd He's a lazy bastard Living in a suit Tremendous! What a life he lived. Great stuff.... I'll need to get in gear to do mine, but will probably wait till the New Year.
Ha ha. That verse from Cohen's Going Home always made me laugh. I agree that Bob, Leonard, and Neil are the best of the best and two thirds of that group are Canadian 🙂🇨🇦 I can wait until 2025 for your video! 👍
Nice tag response! For Rush vapor trails, “remixed” in my mind is normally “stay away” thanks for the education that remixed is the one to have. I definitely need to seek out the Bob Mould live record store day release. Fly Pan Am sounds interesting, maybe your friend should find a bag of weed and revisit 😊 I love your passion on Leonard Cohen. I am embarrassingly unfamiliar with Cohens music and your videos inspire me to rectify that . Peter Murphy top five is high praise. He is outstanding and he maybe high on my list as well.
Hi Shawn, I thought you would have already owned that Bob Mould album! Weed before Fly Pan Am might have done the trick. Another person commented that one Leonard Cohen album is enough. For some people, that is probably correct!
That German Leonard Cohen comp is cool! There’s some good, more obscure songs on there. Have you heard about the new Leonard Cohen movie/mini series that’s suppose to be coming out soon? I think it’s called ‘so long, Marianne’. Actually I think it’s only available to stream in Canada on ‘Crave’?
It has always been in January but it seems they have jumped the gun this year and I may wait until January to do any responses when people probably won't care by then. Nice to work The Velvet Underground and John Cale in immediately. I love your choice of Nick Cave's Murder Ballads and a little scary at the same time. Nice XTC pick.
“It makes it untenable so I did not buy it”…”I’d have loved to have more recordings of John Cale with the Velvet Underground”…This was a surprise to me, but then the solo John Cale solo album appears. 😂 “The first album I heard was Hemispheres, but again I don’t know when that was”…”This is what I’m choosing, make of that what you will”…Apartment Story is a really excellent song by The National. Johnny Marr is a wise decision. For the record, I’m a Stones guy. If I had to rank the 3 bands I’m Stones. Led Zeppelin, and Beatles. You didn’t let me down on an unpredictable response to the “weed” question. I will have a puff and listen to that track to create my own assessment. That Wings of Pegasus channel is one I’ve intermittently viewed over the past several years, and he’s on point most times. I’m not a big XTC guy. Brian reincarnated as Leonard Cohen. All the women coming in for the expansive vocabulary.
If you check put Fly Pan Am, make sure you listen to all 17 minutes of "Dans Ses Cheveux Soixante Circuits" (th-cam.com/video/fhSIIvaFZbg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=99k_0LwR18qGY0Ro). Not a big XTC guy! WTF? I thought you were an 80s guy! I think Leonard Cohen have taught me a thing or two. At the very least, he'd make a great wingman!
Yes that is quite an amazing acquisition to start off your tag response, what a great set that should bring you joy for years to come. Makes it even better that you got such a great deal on it. I suppose I need to buckle down and get that remixed Vapor Trails album, I keep hearing that it's so much better than the original. I watched a video of Cohen performing "Anthem" the other day and decided that he was one of the best interpreters of his own music/poetry. Yeah there are some good covers out there, but his delivery fits them the best. I don't blame you for wanting to be the reincarnation of Cohen, what a classy guy he was. I don't think the time constraint works in the after life so you could come back during your own current lifetime, right? Just never be in the same place as your other self or you'll cause some kind of catastrophic event. I love your answer to the over-asked question Stones or The Beatles. And Physical Graffiti is the best one to pick! I love that you agree with me on which is slightly better, GY!BE or Fly Pan Am. I just need more of their vinyl albums. Yes yes yes on The Pixies! Right now, for me, they can do no wrong. It's funny how many pop artists are lip-synch at their concerts now. I remember when ELO got caught doing it and for the longest time, people hated them for it. Yep, Constellation label is the best. I actually thought that before I moved to Canada. Love that "Horses in the Sky" album. Excellent response to the tag of the year. I'll do this eventually, but I will have some awesome Christmas gifts coming, so I might hold off until then. As far as favorite YT channel, yeah, pretty much impossible to answer that. I would have responded to this earlier, but got interrupted halfway through.
Mike, I can always count on you for a thorough comment or two! Cohen was classy, but it's really the womanizing I admire 🙂 (I hope Cecile is not reading this). Maybe the Stones vs Beatles question should have been GYBE or Fly Pan Am! Ii hope Santa is good to you. I hear you could use a few good records this year. Maybe I can put in a good word for you!
Its interesting & this is why i enjoy the VC, you mention that you can ignore the politics & just focus on the music , whereas i find that difficult. John Lydon is a great example, i'm totally fascinated by his MAGA transformation, and his recent Morrissey like comments on certain aspects of British culture, & I dont let it effect my enjoyment of the music, but i'm frequently thinking about it when listening to the music & anylysing lyrics! On the other hand, people using pre-recorded vocals in a live setting doesnt bother me at all, I've never really been a big fan of authenticity in music. I dont know why? I'm hoping to do a video of albums I only like one side of, my friend suggested 'Doolittle' I said 'are you mad??' I would love that Matrix Tape boxset.
This is an interesting perspective. I only heard about John Lydon's views (briefly) recently, and I had no idea. Maybe I shodlu dig into what Morrissey actually said, but maybe that would kill my enjoyment of The Smiths, which would be sad. I think I am fine with backing tracks at a show, but if they are straight up using a full vocal backing track and not actually singing, I think I would feel ripped off. Doolittle clearly has two great sides! 🙂
Led Zeppelin ruled the 70s. Weed makes everything sound better. I’m amazed at how many people are fine with going to concerts with prerecorded music and vocals. That is a big no-go for me. I still haven’t heard an XTC album. I actually listen to most of my RSD releases. I’ve purged some that didn’t sound good or I didn’t like. I have one Leonard Cohen album. I like it but I think that is all I need.
I'm surprised that you haven't heard an XTC record. I only recently heard the Byrds' Sweetheart Of The Rodeo and Mr. Tambourine Man for the first time! Most people probably need one Cohen record.
Horraayyyy! Brian is back. Always look forward to your submissions

This is a good tag this year. Maybe 5 questions less ? Last year, I was too busy digging through Bill's garage to do a response ! 😄

@@Pluralofvinylisvinyls Oh no. This is a bad news 😔
People will be waiting impatiently for your Vinyl Tag video. Maybe I should have waited 🙂 I am pretty confident that I could never murder anyone 😜
First like was MINE! Mwaaahahaha!
I'll write something more deserving later, watching some minions on a rare blu-ray purchase (rare these days).
Minions! That sounds like good Friday fun 🙂
@ Despicable Me 4 was fun but... Bit frustrating in parts.
I have only seen the first one, so I am way behind . . .
@ I guess there's 6 movies total? 4 main ones, 1 minions origin story and 1 about young Gru that tied in to the minions one.
@EmbryonicRobot I need all the good words I can get. Santa's ideas about what is naughty or nice and my own can vary at times.
I probably spent too much money on records this year, which definitely makes me naughty. . .
To be honest sone bands with aging lead singers should really use some studio pitch adjustment when live :)
@@LowNoiseJasonSkilz Well, that might be true!
Vinyl tag 2026 will start on the 1st of January 2025.
Just have half a bottle of whiskey it'll all make sense then.
I might be ready for another vinyl tag video in January!
