Randy's Rhythm
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 23 มี.ค. 2021
Welcome to the channel folks. My name is Randy Cox and I live in East Texas. I spent most of my life unsatisfied with my guitar progress. So, if you are like I was, I look forward to helping you make some measurable progress. On this channel we do a mix of guitar topics, such as guitar reviews and basic fingerstyle guitar. From time to time we also feature other TH-cam artists for a variety of different, but well worth it, reasons. My videos will almost always have commentary as an accompaniment to the music that I either teach, or play. I like getting to know the subscribers on this channel, so that I can better serve them. That said, we'd love to have you on the channel and very much appreciate the opportunity to help you, and/or learn from you. I will always respond to comments that are respectful.
Mackenzie & Marr Review
New guitar week! I recently ran across a company called Mackenzie & Marr, located in Montreal Canada. Scrolling through the available inventory, I found a Grand Manan Too, which sits somewhere between a dred and a OM/OOO. I received it this week and I have to say, WOW. This is one loud, resonant guitar that screams fingerstyle. If you have a problem getting any volume out of your guitar while playing fingerstyle, this may be your answer. I thought we'd make an attempt to show something a bit different in this upload. Open tuning is not something you see folks do everyday, so thought a light dive into it might just do the trick for some of you. #opentuning, #opendguitar, #alternateguitartuning #12throotguitars Feel free to reach out anytime at: asmallstone1977@gmail.com
Yamaha FS5 Review
มุมมอง 2.6K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Yamaha FS5 - Would I buy it again?... No Not a bad guitar folks, but far from mind-blowing. One correction to what I said in the video, per a commenter, the color of the top is apparently not due to the cooking of the top, but rather a stain, or? According to him (Wobbz9413) I'm way off line about that. He has a LL16D with an almost white top and it has been treated with the same process. J...

Mossman Guitars - A Very Important Guitar Review
Great picking, brother!
Love this❤
Very kind of you to say, ma'am 👍
G'Day Randy... Enjoyed your review with reservations ???? and... Cannot decide what your (possible) problem is ? THAT guitar in your hands is a 'Beauty' ! Compliments to your fingers ! 'Tone' is EVERYTHING with me and THAT guitar is just singing it's own sweet song... Own a range of Guitar models and styles, including a YAMAHA F310CEQ ... Golden Mahogany and Spruce Top with different Tone to yours... Love my guitar and would also love that guitar you have demonstrated... Nothing wrong with those tuners and suspect those strings just need "playing in" for a couple of hours over period of time ???? Binding ???? Some of my guitars are beautifully bound and some are simple or none at all... Randy... It's all about Tone and suggest a cuppa coffee and reconsideration could make you the happiest owner of that FS5 worldwide ! Price ? Mmmm... Am inclined to agree with you and would say value is approx US$1,000-00 ... but... quality and value are subjective variances to individuals... At the end of the day (?) "Pay up and smile" if you desire that particular guitar... (Show me two guitars the same ?? Have never seen or heard same yet, whether same Brands, Models etc)... Good Cheers ! 🤠
Hi Chris, you make a ton of great points. I suppose the guitar is good enough, but it just didn’t seem to measure up to the hype that I was hearing. You likely know how that can be sometimes. I really appreciate the polite way you put all of that 😁. You’re too kind, brother man 👍🏻
I got the one from China, but after I had it set up I’ve had no issues
I’m glad to hear it, Todd. They are certainly lighter than the Indonesian one. Appreciate you sharing that, brother man 👍🏻
excellently superbly wondrous marvellously outstandingly superlative
Much appreciated 👍🏻
Sounds and looks good, a fine guitar ;)
Thank you, sir 👍🏻
Hey Randy . . . . firstly, the tune you played for your intro was played beautifully and sounded great as well, and secondly . . . a very nice guitar indeed. Cannot believe the cost of the guitar $$ . . . hand made!!! 🤷🏻♂ Cheers my good friend . . . . John 😊 ✌
Hi John, great hearing from you. Yes sir, quite impressive for the money, brother man 👍🏻
I own this guitar and love it. I use a separate fishman humbucker and get a decent sound from it. I also professionally installed a pin on the side of the neck to strap my guitar. I’m convinced this will be the last acoustic guitar I will own.
After having this guitar several months, I think I’ve nailed down why I wasn’t as impressed as I expected to be. The neck angle on mine escaped the factory with an issue. While I hate to spend more money on it, I’m going to. I’ll do an update afterwards, brother man 👍🏻
I can't find a Chinese model hummingbird worth buying not even used!!
Hey Clyde, thus far I’ve played one, and it had issues. There are/were 2 Indonesian IBG Hummingbirds on Reverb for sale. They are getting scarce, brother man 👍🏻
Beautiful performance Randy
Thank you!
Definitely on of my fav tuning open D, great video man
Thank you, sir 👍🏻
What strings come on it
Hi David, I don’t know what it shipped with, but I replaced them with Martin Retro 12’s.
Pretty good review. Nice to know people give honest reviews still. 😊
You’re a good man, Mr Aaron! Thank you, sir 👍🏻
Nice review as always Randy, I've been on the lookout for a 3 or 5 series Yamaha since they came out. Now this may be controversial, but I am pretty certain that both the 3 and 5 series guitars are made in China. Where they differ is that the 3 series are completely done in China, whereas they ship out the finished carcasses of some of these to Japan, where fretwork is done there, along with adding that fake Ebony pickguard on top of the original Black plastic one. They add a slightly wider bone saddle for better intonation, and a bone nut. They also give it a hard case, call it the 5 series and claim it's Japanese made and price accordingly. Personally I would get the 3 series and mod it up to a 5 myself. This kind of thing has been done before. The John Lennon reissue Casino's of late 90's-2000's were all made by Terada in Japan. Those fully finished carcasses were shipped to the USA where the electronics and hardware were added and the guitars were set up and sold with a little sticker on the back of the headstock stating"Assembled in the USA". They were basically Japanese, and still people think they were a US made reissue. Keep up the good work Randy👍
Hi Steve, you’re the second person to mention the factories to me and the pickguard. I suppose this marketing deception is common these days, as you say. I was disappointed in the QC, and now the deceptive marketing, more than anything else. Yamaha, I’m afraid, have become another highway cafe to me, in that you stop there to eat once, then put it on your list of places to never stop again. I detest misleading advertising. The guitar sounds good, but lying to your customers is simply evil. These guys got me once 😁. Always appreciate hearing your insights and appreciate you taking the time to share, brother man 👍🏻
CCP spyware included. 😆
😂
Not a bad sounding guitar! They look like a solid outfit 👍
Not too shabby, James. Let’s go Brandon 👍🏻
Nice review Randy the guitar sounds awesome.
Thank you, brother man Oz 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm Keep plucking those cool guitars 🔥
Wow / Randy / You made that Guitar ( J-45 ) sound much like a Gibson so I bought one - ( Indonesia) 🇮🇩 and love It ( not quite my Gibson J-160 Beatles Model)!
Hi Thomas, a 160 is a top notch guitar, for sure! Very pleased you picked the 45 up and are enjoying it, brother man 👍🏻
I think this man's fingers could make anything sparkle and shine.
You’re too kind, Ivan. Appreciate you, brother man 👍🏻
I've just been on the Mackenzie & Marr website. I'm very impressed. The Riverboat dreadnought has got a huge sound. They're some of the greatest sounding instruments l've heard. And if ever l feel the need for a 12 string, l know where to look. There's is amazing. Thanks for sharing your discovery Randy.
Hi Andy, the Riverboat seems to be a cannon. I did see the 12 string as well. Great guys for sure, brother man 👍🏻
I can't believe the price of that guitar! It looks and sounds just great. Especially in your hands. Beautiful playing Randy.
Hi Andy, very much appreciate the kind words. These guys are a pleasure to deal with, brother man 👍🏻
What a beautiful guitar, sounds so nice when you were playing it too.
Hi Graeme, much appreciated, brother man 👍🏻. Hope all is well.
Colonel , That is a wonderful sounding guitar with the looks to match. They maybe my next guitar to buy , I would have went with them but as you know I was hunting a Gibson. I am glad it all work out and you are tickled with her !
If it hadn’t been for you, I might never have heard about them, Colonel Terry, sir. Thank you very much for clueing me in, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm Well when I her the girl playing hers I know you would like them. Brother you are Welcome !
Randy, you're making all of us up here blush. Thank you so much for the in-depth review.
You guys certainly deserve every bit of it and more. The attention to detail, in every way, was impressive, brother man 👍🏻
That tune you’re playing in this is just about as beautiful as it gets! Great to hear your fabulous picking!!! Wonderful guitar!
Hi Ms Rose, you’re about as kind as they come, ma’am. Hope you’re doing well and thank you 👍🏻
I checked my IBG hummingbird 12-string, and, luckily, it was built in Indonesia. Positions 5 and 6 are “23”. I was very relieved! Thank you!
Great to hear, Merv. You are most welcome, brother man 👍🏻
Wow Randy thats a beautiful guitar man.. I was just looking on the website and the one you got is the one I like best.. sounds fantastic👌Man next time I come across some $$ I reckon that may be the next one on the list, what a bargain.I know what you mean with the tuners.. the real thing is SO much nicer than the replicas..Nice review as always👍
Hi Jason, yes sir, for individualizing notes, this thing is a beast. Great hearing from you and appreciate the kindness, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm My pleasure Randy, great review and a very cool guitar. Hey how does the body size compare to the Yam on your lap roughly? I'm guessing it's more like the Furch size, slightly bigger and deeper?
@@JasonMckellMusic Yes sir, slightly bigger and dred deep. Thanks for the kind words, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm Awesome nice combination.. thanks man👍
That guitar sounds great. I love your opening tune. Sounds like a sad cowboy song. Hope you and your family are well.
Hi Steve, appreciate the kind words, brother man. I think they are building some great guitars 👍🏻
That Mac And Marr sounds very nice mate. I dont believe they are available here in Oz, but Ive listened to a few online and they all sounded quite nice. Hope you are well my friend, take care and play on...P.S. Loved your freight train pickin brother, very nice playing indeed, and man that thing is LOUD!
Hey my friend, I think they build some great guitars. Appreciate the kind words. Freight Train is surely one of my favorites, brother man 👍🏻
I like guitar so much!! Unfortunately I don't have one yet!! Beautiful sharing my dear friend Randy!! Love and respect Kyle!! 😊🥁🇵🇭
Thank you, my we brother man Kyle 👍🏻
Beautiful guitar and a wonderful demo and talk, very well done Randy 👏👏👏👏
Always appreciate your feedback, Trevor. Thanks for the kind words, brother man 👍🏻
I left 3 comments and 2 got lost, what the hell... Randy, can you please check the comments from TH-cam Studio? Maybe they got moderated for no real reason.
Hi Igor, I actually just responded to one of your comments, but this one is the only other one I’ve seen. YT gets a bit strange sometimes and I’ve seen views on videos actually go down, which we both know isn’t possible. Sorry that happened to you about the other comment, because I’m always interested in your feedback, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm wow this is so amazing well done i love it and beautiful my frend great job
@@bunnyGIRLS143Thank you, Bunny 👍🏻
First of all, just stellar playing, Brother. Top notch. What a great review- nice to hear that there are high quality, affordable guitars being made. I have no problem with the China aspect, especially since it’s run by a North American company. Great review, and great information 👏🎸😎
My friend, Paul! I’m glad to hear that I didn’t ruin this video 😂. I actually thought I may have overdriven the sound, but it seems to have not happened. Always appreciate your input and kindness, brother man 👍🏻
I'd bet 100$ this is the same case that SIGMA sells under its brand, haha! Love to notice stuff like this.
Hey Igor, that’s quite an eye you have there 😁. You may well be right about that. It’s really a nice case and fits the guitar perfectly. Great hearing from you, brother man 👍🏻
Holy cow Randy, that thing sounds awesome. Very clear while finger style playing and crisp while using a pic. I would be happy with it. That extra body depth really makes a difference in volume too. You have a winner there. I'll talk to you soon my friend.
Hey David, glad that came through in the video. I was a bit concerned that I had botched the video by overdriving the volume, so glad to hear that it may not have happened. Always appreciate you, my good friend 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm I didn't hear anything that sounded over driven. Sinle notes were clear and chords were never peaking, and I listen through my 65 inch Samsung flat screen with good external speakers. Didn't try with headphones but I would be able to hear flaws through my setup. You was right about it's sound, when we talked. They definitely have a winner with those guitars.
@@HayesTechAppreciate that additional feedback, brother man 👍🏻
Great review Randy. Wonderful sounding guitar. 🤠👍✌️👏👏👏👏
Thank you, brother man Bruce. Hope you’re doing well, sir 👍🏻
Another great video Randy! Never heard of this brand but it's sounds pretty dang good. The days of Chinese guitars being bottom of the barrel quality are long behind us. I would love to see you do a video on an Eastman guitar. Eastman is also Chinese and the value of their guitars is quite unreal. I recently got their new E3OM Deluxe model and it's a fantastic instrument just like really most of their guitars, even the 'affordable' ones. I work in a guitar shop so I have played tons of Eastmans. Highly recommend them and I think that it would be a great brand to review on your channel one day!
Hi Tom,thank you very much for the kind words. Yes sir, Eastman have been on my radar for a while now. The E20 00 is one I’d like to pick up at some point. It just happens to be the first one that caught my eye. Appreciate you reminding me about them and I’ve had several folks mention them to me over the last year or so. I’ll also check out the E30M while I’m at it. I really appreciate the advice on this, brother man 👍🏻
Beautiful playing and very informative details about this beautiful guitar. I wish you all the best Randy !! Greetings from Austria😁
Hi Daniel, great hearing from you. Thank you very much and always appreciate your kind comments, brother man 👍🏻
What a lovely entrance with the little snippet you played before the tutorial began. I could listen to you playing like this for a whole day !!! That was wonderful!!! Same as your explanation in the video as well!
Hi Ms Julie, great to see your smiling face, ma’am. Much appreciated and you’re always so kind 👍🏻
I own both- great playing review. To me my Bird is alive and friskier- the Slash J-45 just lacks something. It's balanced and perfectly presentable- but sounds unremarkable.
Hi EJ, I would agree for sure that there are just some guitars that you play that simply touch you personally and the IBG Hummingbird is one of those that touched me, as well as your good self. Appreciate the kind words and you taking the time to watch the video, brother man 👍🏻
This was super great info Randy. I haven't done any open tuning but i would love to give it a try. It would be great for songwriting which i have doing a bit of lately. Thanks for the video!!
Thank you, Ms J-Lyn. I was actually hoping you’d see this video, because I thought you’d adapt very well to this tuning. You have a great style that might even shine utilizing it. Always appreciate you, ma’am 👍🏻
Great tutorial, Randy! Thank you for sharing. Greetings from Elly 🎸🎸🎸
Thank you, Ms Elly. Great hearing from you, ma’am 👍🏻
Love it!
Thank you, Ms Tina 👍🏻
Its much easier to adjust a guitar to your own preferences if the action is high, manufacturers known that and do it on purpose because they dont want to risk it being too low because the guitar will buzz and the shop will never be able to sell it.
Completely agree, Tony. However, this guitar likely had neck angle issues. It was ridiculously high and varied up and down the fretboard, the nut height should be right, from the factory, and as you know, there should be light relief. It wasn’t just high in this case, it was horribly off. Appreciate your insights and your always welcome here. I should have given more details on this one, brother man 👍🏻
Well done! Like yourself, I own one ... incredible value, as you say! The gimmick you use for laughter is very catchy! What do you think about Cole Clark guitars? James
Thank you, James! I have never been in the same room with a Cole Clark, but everything I’ve read about them has been pretty impressive, brother man 👍🏻
Thumbs up subbed Great video, I just got an epiphone j200,studio parlor, EC, love it, it's my first epiphone, those your playing sound Great 👍
Hi Justin, I’ve played the one you own and I liked it. These IBG Epiphones are very special guitars. If you get a chance to find the Indonesian made IBG, I highly recommend it. Appreciate the comment and the sub, brother man 👍🏻
Thanks for the fine music
Thank you, brother man Dan 👍🏻
Great guitar playing and videos Randy I was lucky to find an IBG J 45 Slash model... what a great sound and now I've got my eye on one of those IBG Hummingbirds, keep up the good work 😎🎸🎶💙
Hi Mark, I’ve played the Slash 45. Other than the finish, the only real difference between the two is the 16” radius fretboard. A really great guitar! On the Hummingbird, if you pick one up, I’d suggest picking up a used one and the reason is that they have now moved the manufacturing to China on the IBG lineup. The 5th and 6th digits in the serial number should read 23. That’ll let you know that it was built in the Samick factory, just in case you didn’t know it. I sure love my Hummingbird. I really appreciate the kind words, brother man 👍🏻
