  • The Yamaha FS5 - Would I buy it again?... No
Not a bad guitar folks, but far from mind-blowing.
One correction to what I said in the video, per a commenter, the color of the top is apparently not due to the cooking of the top, but rather a stain, or? According to him (Wobbz9413) I'm way off line about that. He has a LL16D with an almost white top and it has been treated with the same process. Just wanted to correct that. I assumed my wife's biscuits that she makes me every morning, browned up nicely in the oven, so this top must have done the same thing :).

I can't stand an acoustic guitar with the electronic control panel mounted on the side. It just seems wrong.

You and me both. Yamaha seems to do it less intrusively than others, but still makes me cringe a bit. I think the way Takamine does it, scares me the most. I’ve seen a few of those that, because of the guitar itself, I really wanted, but no way I was going to spend the cash for that risk. A hole in the side steered me away from Gibson’s G series. Appreciate the input, brother man 👍🏻

    Hey brother Randy!
I agree 100% with your assessment related to "Here Comes The Sun" it's deceptivly difficult to play being a capo on 9th leaving sparce real estate for our manly fingers, but what took me the longest to work out was the bridge between every two verses as well as the outro.
Sounds simple, but it's anything but!
I have a sweet Yamaha FG 340 in very rare black which I absolutely love! I've had it for over twenty five years, and it was gifted to me by my wife's late uncle John, an absolute diamond who I sorely miss!
Funny story - he came to the house to give me the guitar and would not take no for an answer!
So, he foolishly told me he was going Newmarket, a mid sized (and growing) city South of our little lakeside town. So, with that handy info, I scooped up the guitar and case and drove to his house and left it in the door.
Then we went out for dinner. When we returned, I opened the door and there it was!!
Yamaha are an enigma, they build some of the finest acoustics and electrics such as the SG series which I LOVE, and yet they don't promote them!
If they would put some effort into promotion we'd see all kinds of pro artists using and loving them on stage and in studio!
I stupidly traded my first real acoustic, a Yamaha FG 365 S with a sweet air travel hard shell case when I was 15 or 16 for an electric which was so awesome that I can't recall what it was or what happened to it!! sigh
They are difficult to find, especially mint or near mint examples, and are selling for as much as $2,000. That sweet axe is on my bucket list!
Another great, informative and honest review brother!!
    Thank you!
    Jack ~'()'~

I own this guitar and love it. I use a separate fishman humbucker and get a decent sound from it. I also professionally installed a pin on the side of the neck to strap my guitar. I’m convinced this will be the last acoustic guitar I will own.

Hey Randy great review man.. I love how honest you are about your experience.. I really feel you though because I feel exactly the same way with my Furch.. it's clearly a great guitar but just had some minor things which really left a sour taste in my mouth.
My Yamaha tuners were always fine with staying in tune but they did go really rattly after a while and I changed them out for some Gotoh SXN510's (I think thats what they're called) like the FG9's come with.
Beautiful playing btw I found myself drifting off just listening to some of that picking👌

@@randysrhythm It is what it is.. never a truer word spoken. I really think it's important to play any guitar before you buy it if you can. I would have put my Furch back on the wall in the "nice but not for me" pile if I had played it first and it's sounds like you feel the same.

The tuners are just fine on this guitar. Tuners have basically zero to do with keeping a guitar in tune. The FS5 sounds fabulous finger picked IMO. In the hands of someone who has a delicate touch it is remarkably responsive. As far as the binding etc. Martin uses plastic, as does Gibson and a host of makers. The black binding looks classy as the whole guitar does in an understated manner. I have many high end acoustics and the FS5 is my daily go to guitar to play. An absolute joy.

Nice review Randy ! I wonder if you just got a bad sample. But it sounded very nice with your playing. So many people seem to rave about the FS5. I’d like to get a smaller guitar but not sure which one now. LS16 or LS16M, but FS3 or FS5 were also in the running. Or could just go for a Martin 000-28 or 000-18 or the OM versions. M36 also is interesting.
My LL16D is so loud and clear. Different from my FGX3 for sure.

I like the FG series, but there are reasons why I haven't bought one...and I am a big Yamaha lover.
For me, I go mainly for the dread body, and tend to stay away from smaller bodied guitars. The dread version of that guitar do sound pretty good (from both china and japan factories). But, I dont think they are worth the money. Not sure if yamaha changed it or not but I believe the pickguard is a regular black guard with a textured decal to mimic the wood look.
I do love Yamaha, but my love is for the Luxury Line, the L-Series. I can't say I love the New FG9 either....its good, real good, but it gets away from Yamaha's usual build techniques and sound. A lot of people think the FG9 is the most expensive Yamaha, or their flagship model.....its not!
    Anyway, great vid Randy.
    All the best!

Hi Joseph, if you’re talking about the latest Chinese versions of Epiphones, such as the J-45 Banner, I don’t know. I think it’s a dice roll. They are similarly priced, so it’s a great question that I’d like to have an answer for. The Indonesian IBGs are killer and about half the price, so I’d say IBG for sure. G'Day Randy... Enjoyed your review with reservations ???? and... Cannot decide what your (possible) problem is ? THAT guitar in your hands is a 'Beauty' ! Compliments to your fingers ! 'Tone' is EVERYTHING with me and THAT guitar is just singing it's own sweet song... Own a range of Guitar models and styles, including a YAMAHA F310CEQ ... Golden Mahogany and Spruce Top with different Tone to yours... Love my guitar and would also love that guitar you have demonstrated... Nothing wrong with those tuners and suspect those strings just need "playing in" for a couple of hours over period of time ???? Binding ???? Some of my guitars are beautifully bound and some are simple or none at all... Randy... It's all about Tone and suggest a cuppa coffee and reconsideration could make you the happiest owner of that FS5 worldwide ! Price ? Mmmm... Am inclined to agree with you and would say value is approx US$1,000-00 ... but... quality and value are subjective variances to individuals... At the end of the day (?) "Pay up and smile" if you desire that particular guitar... (Show me two guitars the same ?? Have never seen or heard same yet, whether same Brands, Models etc)... Good Cheers ! 🤠

Good Morning Randy 😎🎸, thought I'd share w you about what happened w this brand new Epiphone Hummingbird inspired by Gibson, I took your advice and took it to an excellent tech who's done pick up upgrades and set ups on my Les Pauls to have the action lowered, due to having to shave down the bone.
Anyway, he took one look then showed me how the bridge actually had started coming off the guitar. I just bought this a few weeks ago I ya remember me. So henmade me a great deal to fix the bridge, and do the set up for me.
He tells me this is something he's been seeing more and more of these things seperate way earlier than you might see them start to kinda come up off, and they need to be repaired, glued and reset. But the do this 20 or 30 years down the road, hot 6 weeks after I bought the guitar.
He says Gibson, Taylor, Epiphone, all of them aren't taking the time to prep these surfaces properly before gluing the bridge, as like my guitar, there was alot of the finish that wasn't removed completely under the bridge, so they don't get a good adhesion.
I got her back yesterday, feels pretty good, except I seem to get too much fret buzz on the 12th fret on the E and A strings. I'm not sure if the buzz, and it's in some other spots, I my playing, being still kinda of a beginner of acoustic player, and I'm not doing a proper press on the notes. You can get away w alot on an electric guitar that you can't on a acoustic.
So we will see how it goes. Was gonna look up what measurements need to be, and measure my strings, but the guitar still sounds amazing.
I've been practicing my finger picking, man it's tuff, and slow going...practice continues....loving the channel Randy😁🎸

I’m a bit sick over this. Would you mind looking at the soundhole sticker and letting me know what the 5th & 6th digits (from left to right) are? Forgive me if you’ve already told me, please. It will either read 15, or 23, and I just want to be double sure about what you have. It should also be an Orange label in the soundhole. I’ve never heard of a factory code 23 bridge lift before, so this would be very odd, if in fact it is 23. The fret buzz could be due to the truss rod adjustment. It could be a hair too tight. There are many videos out there on how to adjust the truss rod. Keep me posted, my friend. I hate recommending something and then someone gets a lemon.
I really appreciate the kind words about the channel, brother man 👍🏻

@randysrhythm Good Afternoon Randy, no worries, I love the guitar, I asked the Tech, who's great by the way, to set the action as low as possible without getting too low to not having clearance on all the frets. The guitar sounds amazing, and like I said, I still consider myself a beginner, even more so on Acoustic, and as I said you can get away w alot of things on an electric guitar that you can't on an acoustic, so we'll see, im sure there's a sweet spot in here to get the set up where it needs to be. If need be I can run it by the tech if need be, he's done great stuff on my electric guitars, and if he works on anything he will make it so you have what you want. As for the numbers you asked, yes Orange tag, and I'm glad I knew on the numbers to make sure it was some of the last still built in Indonesia, it's my understanding Epiphone has moved the production on these to China now.
Numbers are 22102304359, so I guess it's a 23? It is the Orange tag, Top says Inspired by Gibson, then Hummingbird typed in on 1st line
Then the serial # on the second line. Too bad you can't attach a photo on comments on TH-cam.
I did invest on a top of the line hard case, a plastic case at the recommendation of the tech, and a humidifier. I live in Denver, Colorado I'm at almost 6,000ft above sea level, and it tends to be very dry here. I wish I could attach a picture of this humidifier he said to use, it's a "Music Nomad", and it says to place it thru the middle of the sound hole on top of the strings. But it's width stretches the D and G strings, and I'm just concerned about the strings stretching, or messing up the Bridge? I read post after post people posted about sitting on the strings and if it would cause problems, bit Music Nomad has a channel here on TH-cam where they show how to place the humidifier and claim its been used on 10,000 guitars w no problem. If you have a chance Randy, would you mind checking that Humidifier out, I'd like to hear your thoughts, and if it's OK to use, even if the guitar is in the case for Ling periods of time. The case I bought is a hard case, and plastic to protect the wood. Sorry that this post turned out so long.
Thanks for everything your doing here.

      @turrafirmaguitarchannel 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

It is a lot harder to apply finish to a top after the bridge is glued down. But you need the bare wood to make that bridge stay stuck. I wonder how they are doing it at the Epi factory in Indonesia?

    • @Calif5150
      @Calif5150 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@turrafirmaguitarchannel yeah your right in line with the Techs who worked on mine, they basically said same thing. They get pressed to get these things built quickly and are just gluing the bridges on top of some of the finish and don't get a good adhesion. They said they are seeing it on alot of guitars, even top tier models with Gibson, Martin, Epiphone, Taylor etc... They said this problem isn't usually seen until guitars are alot older.
I'm still loving this guitar though man, it just sounds incredible. This dude I know wants to trade me his J45 for it, and keep telling him I'll think about it, but honestly this guitar is a keeper, and I haven't felt like that of any guitar ive owned in 20yrs. Being one of the last built in that Indonesia shop, I think she'll be a collectable one day.

Hi, great demo. I have only one question. I've watched a lot of videos about this guitar and they all sound like it doesn't have enough bass. What do you think? Is there anything true or am I wrong?

    • @randysrhythm
      @randysrhythm  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thank you for the kind words. It’s not got the bass that I was hoping for. However, the balance is pretty spot on. I’m just not a fan of this model. If I had it to do over again, I’d pick up a Gibson L-00 Original. Just yesterday I was at Norman’s Rare Guitars in LA and I played the higher end L-00, which has Rosewood back and sides. It had killer punch with a great bottom end. On my Community tab, you’ll see a pic of me playing that guitar. It took every ounce of discipline that I posses to walk out without it. You’re not wrong, brother man 👍🏻

Well, I thought it was just me until I heard your review. I usually bare finger pick, and I heard immediately that it was just not the quality sound that I have experienced with my other guitars. Fit and finish is extremely nice, but I was expecting a more full and satisfying sound for the price and all the hype about this Japanese made guitar. And the tuners disappointed me, as well. Like you, I would advise someone to consider other options at this price point or to save just a little more and go for a truly great guitar. I would definitely say this is one model you should play first before buying…I skipped this important step after hearing the raving reviews and talk of how under priced the FS5 and F5 are.

Hi J, I think you pretty much summed it up. Great analysis and while others may really like this FS5, I found it really dull for fingerstyle. Really great overtones when strummed in an open chord position, but unfortunately we do more than just open chords, brother man 👍🏻

Nice review as always Randy, I've been on the lookout for a 3 or 5 series Yamaha since they came out. Now this may be controversial, but I am pretty certain that both the 3 and 5 series guitars are made in China. Where they differ is that the 3 series are completely done in China, whereas they ship out the finished carcasses of some of these to Japan, where fretwork is done there, along with adding that fake Ebony pickguard on top of the original Black plastic one. They add a slightly wider bone saddle for better intonation, and a bone nut. They also give it a hard case, call it the 5 series and claim it's Japanese made and price accordingly. Personally I would get the 3 series and mod it up to a 5 myself.
This kind of thing has been done before. The John Lennon reissue Casino's of late 90's-2000's were all made by Terada in Japan. Those fully finished carcasses were shipped to the USA where the electronics and hardware were added and the guitars were set up and sold with a little sticker on the back of the headstock stating"Assembled in the USA". They were basically Japanese, and still people think they were a US made reissue.
Keep up the good work Randy👍

Hi Steve, you’re the second person to mention the factories to me and the pickguard. I suppose this marketing deception is common these days, as you say. I was disappointed in the QC, and now the deceptive marketing, more than anything else. Yamaha, I’m afraid, have become another highway cafe to me, in that you stop there to eat once, then put it on your list of places to never stop again. I detest misleading advertising. The guitar sounds good, but lying to your customers is simply evil. These guys got me once 😁. Always appreciate hearing your insights and appreciate you taking the time to share, brother man 👍🏻

I had a FG5 for awhile. It sounded great but I sold it on because of two things - I found the neck too small and mine had a slight neck angle issue and a really low saddle as a result. I think the low saddle is a common issue with these red labels. I also suspect, and I used to be able to find posts talking about this, but can't now, so can't prove it, but I think that the FS5 & FG5s are partially made in China and then finished in Japan. I don't see how at that price they are fully made from start to finish in Japan. BTW - that wood pickguard is a thick plastic sticker - it is not wood. I much prefer my old converted 1203 & 1260 Sovereigns to the FG5/FS5.

    • @randysrhythm

Hi Peter, assuming your information was accurate about the build (not doubting you, you understand), then that might explain a few things. Two plants working on one guitar can’t be the best plan and increases the odds of mistakes. I may give them another chance on a different guitar, but only if I can find one in a storefront. @@randysrhythm I peeled mine off and wrapped the truss rod cover with a piece of it as I didn't care for the retro look cover on this guitar. Works great for that application. Much better look to me. Haha I love the guitar and agree with your thoughts on strumming. I consider it my 000-Dred as I use it if I want a smaller body while I'm jammin with others. I've played a couple of LL16 and didn't enjoy them at all.
      They were heavy, too tight.
Guess the plastic nuts-saddles-pins, undersaddle trash and heavy tuners affect the tone so much. Fixing all of these issues would easily give a guitar +15-25% in tone.
      Glad you're loving yours though!

I’m not as sure about it being the best sounding guitar I’ve put up on the channel, but I certainly have no issues with you thinking that 😁. I played FG3, and my experience was similar!
I was surprised with how vibrant the tone was, but it felt like the tone didn't have "meat". A bummer.
Tuning machines are stylish, but the shafts are TOO HIGH. That robs the tone a little. Also, you won't be able to replace those machines without exposing the traces of the old machines. Bummer.
