You may recall I had a serious issue with my Excellente a few months back where three strings had buzzing up and down the neck.
WARNING AND PREEMPTIVE APOLOGIES RANDY LENGTHY COMMENT ALERT!!
This really perplexed me because I play it every day several times a day and because I'm writing enough new songs to record a new CD at my buddie's studio, I had been playing for several hours each day.
So, one morning I took her out of the case and usually, she was in perfect tune, but this morning it was way out which surprised me.
I won't drag you down the rabbit hole, but I can tell you it was a "wascawy wabbit hole!"! ")
I briefly adjusted the truss rod which had no effect but I didn't want to do anything that might void my warranty and so I called John, from the local small family owned and operated music shop here in town which I've been a customer over 30 years, so we're very much familiar with each other and they've ALWAYS given me smoking hot deals and discounts every time I buy a guitar or case/giggity bag etc.
So, I described the situation and John told me to bring it in.
Again, I'll keep it short - they attempted to fix it and couldn't , so it went to Epiphone.
Epiphone had it three weeks and sent it back to Connors but John took a look and played a few chords and told the guy it was not acceptable and sent it back to Epiphone!!
Epiphone told Connors they sent the guitar to their head luthier who also failed to resolve it, and so the guitar was pleked. They sent it back and unbelievably it was still buzzing!!
I know a lot of guitarists haven't heard of "pleking" and so I'll drop a link to a video demonstration and explanation at the end of this comment.
I was NOT at all happy! I knew if I had to activate the warranty the odds of getting another one were slim to none!! So, I resolved to the bitter reality, I would be getting a full refund, which SUCKED because I do love this axe and they are getting near impossible to find as the value and price have already gone up over $100 to $400 over the retail in under a year!!
These axes are only going to go up in value and as such many collectors will never sell them or trade them knowing in a few short years they'll reasonably go up to $5,000 and even higher!
That is a great factor but for me, and I'm pretty certain you feel the same Randy, these guitars are superior in tone, acoustic volume, and playability, the necks are awesome. The esthetics are also very subtle but really beautiful!! Each one has been hand built start to finish by the same master builder! So, to be clear, I'm not saying one master builder built all these Excellentes - rather, each guitar was built from start to finish by the same master builder.
So, with nothing to lose I had another, more thorough go at her.
I adjusted the truss rod several times as I adjusted, tightened the strings in tune, played and listened/felt for buzz, there was and so it was a matter of "wash, rinse, repeat"!
It's tedious but necessary if you expect any success!! There's no cutting corners which sadly, I suspect each luthier who had a go had done.
I also removed the replacement saddle which was TUSQ and not bone which I prefer and the guitar came with. I put the bone saddle back in and with a shim which using a variety of thickness' until I felt I'd got the exact height I was after.
I also discovered the original saddle as well as two replacements , one by Connors and the other by Epiphone didn't match the neck radius, and so I dealt with that, and put the saddle in with perfect shim, replaced and tuned the strings and VIOLA!!! She's back to where she once belonged!!
After going through all these various "adjustments" and attempts to fix the issue I'd forgotten what the tone and and properly adjusted action sounded and felt like.
But as soon as I got her back together and hit that first chord, it came straight back in spades!!!
What an awesome rich tone and sustain was fantastic!! The neck was like butter...or, as my friends from the Bronx would say - it felt like "buddah"!!
After all that shenanigans and tomfoolery, I had my sweet, sweet lady back and it feels awesome!!!

The CD in the background is Paul Georgia’s brother, Louie. He was a very well known lead guitarist in the northeast, NY, Jersey, Connecticut, etc.. He passed away at a very young age, sadly. Paul is a dear friend on the channel. Louie played with folks like Melanie Safka, a folk singer/rock girl with a pretty rich history with the likes of James Taylor and others. Louie was quite a guy. You’ve a good eye, Ms Julie 👍🏻
