Installing Roof Trusses On A Four Bed House
Very nice job mate. Any chance to let me know what sizes of timber the building inspector ask now days for the exact same roof. Thanks
Hi mate, this was a good few years ago now. But we did have a drawing to work off with all the sizes. We used 9x1 lay boards on the old roof. And I think the rafters were 8x2 and the hips were 9x2 but I can’t remember 100%!
@@ashleydavenport3794 Thank you very much for your reply mate.
@@edmondmandreja9725 no problem pal, hope the job goes okay 👌
What type of insulation is going in there? Spray?
Hi mate, in the cavity it’s the blow in stuff from the inside and in the loft space it’s rockwool insulation think a minimum of 400mm
Sorry to be jumping on here a few years too late 🤣, you know where the lay boards are did you have to have structural calculations as I’m assuming below the lay board on the other side of the hip would be less than the new rafter your using?
Hi mate, don’t worry haha! No we didn’t have to have any calculations for that section that goes on top of the old roof. We’ve done a few now and never had any issues from building inspectors. I suppose the weight gets a lot less as it rises up the roof on the valley so it should be fine just on the 9x1 lay board. Cheers for your comment 👍
Is this a fine toothed saw?
No just a normal saw, but it would be easier with a fine tooth saw, or grinder 👌
Good video, what the pros and cons to a sub fascia with a thinner capping board over
cheers! pros i guess are the timber sub fascia is strong so will add strength, also allows fixings all the way across for guttering etc. if we use sub fascia we normally use the same size fascia as usual, its just the 4x1 timber that we normally dont have enough of. no really any cons of a sub its a better job overall. cheers
@ashleydavenport3794 i like the idea of the timber sub fascia for strength and gutter brackets but then the upvc capping board over it to keep costs down but combined i think its too thick together for over fascia vents to work. Maybe adding the thicker one sitting higher than the sub board would work ok. I'm doijg a self build so need to decide.
@@handle1196 sounds good, I’m not sure how the over fascia vents work but I’m sure it would be fine if they were the same height but not 100%. You could hang your capping fascia slightly above the sub? I know it wouldn’t be that strong but could be an option
@ashleydavenport3794 i need to get my hands on some over fascia vents to see, they look designed to sit on an 18mm board nails down into the fascia then have an air vent that over hangs the front. So the nail down needs to go into something solid like the 18mm board and not end up going between the fascia and the sub fascia. I'll get hold of one but guessing they're best used with 18mm board only.
Got just a little over a week until I finish my Lvl 2 Carpentry NVQ. And I'll be qualified? I don't believe it. There's things I've seen is this video alone that I've never ever seen in college. Certainly rather nerve-racking. I haven't forgotten my stepdad telling me "Driving lessons only teach you to pass the test, when you really learn to drive is your first two years on the road. Likewise, learning a trade at college will only get you the qualification. You don't really learn to be a carpenter until your first two years on site," This video has just proved the man right 🤣
Hi pal! Yes that’s very true. Are you trying to get on sites at the min as well? You’ll learn a lot more when your on site 100%. Good luck! 💪💪
@@ashleydavenport3794 I've been trying to find site work for a couple months now. But down here on the Isle Of Wight, there's not even enough jobs for all the experienced chippies, let alone the space for newly qualified college students like me 😂
Do you ever use pvc glue?
Not when doing fascia and soffit pal
Hi Ashley love the videos orsome hope you can help 😊 is there a set distance for the first truss or dose it differ to the size of the building??
Hi mate, because this roof didn’t have ladder ends I just set the truss in enough that a brick pillar could run up the inside of the gable. I’ve got other videos on how to set the truss up if you have ladder ends if you want to check them out. Also if there wasn’t a brick pillar I just set them 60mm which is the thickness of my level! Haha hope that helps! Cheers
Hi thanks for the help I've seen the other video 👌👌👌keep them coming mate 👍 😉
@@simondavies1900 cheers pal!
How would you calculate or measure the 2 rafters that would normally be part of the 3 king common rafters, but they sit on the lay board?
Bit tricky to explain. But I think what we did there was plumb down off the end of the ridge and mark it on the old roof, then get the measurement from that to the new wall plate. Then we can transfer that mark onto the lay boards and then measure the rafter like normal. Then after that ones in they are just at 400 centres or what ever. Hope that makes sense! Cheers
Hi. How much would something like this roof cost. I need a roof identical to this one on my extension 7m x 4m and trying to gauge price
Hi mate, this was a few years ago so hard to say accurately. We also only did labour on this job , I think it was something like 1500-2000 labour and you’d probably looking at the same again for materials if not more. Cheers

What is that orange deck you’re walking around on?
It’s a crash deck, been on jobs for a good few years now it replaced bean bags to protect you from falls. And it’s so much better because you can actually work off it!
@@ashleydavenport3794 nice - how is it supported from below?
@@sctrader151 it’s supported on plastic posts, if you google crash decking or safety decking it’ll show you how it’s done. It’s a good system tbf
Nice job. The dick heads that did my house didn't care whether the join was on or between the joists so now the floor creeks in every room upstairs. It's going to be a big and messy job to fix.
Cheers pal, ahh that’s rubbish. But there can be a lot of reason for it squeaking, not enough glue, on the metal work, and the studs, on the nails in the boards. Haha so it could be easier to fix than re laying them 🤞 hope you get it sorted
Wicked video very helpful
Thanks pal, glad you enjoyed it! 👌
Did you go to Fascia & Soffit University dude?
I did pal yeah! Haha
Great work. If you want to board these new build attic does it need some sort of reinforcing before the boards go on. Thanks.
They don’t recommend boarding them, I think that’s to save the plasterboard beneath cracking, so yeah I’d say strength it up slightly to be safe!
Should just go back to block the full wall it must cost way more now as it’s over engineered to the max it’s always the joiners to sort it out
I know mate. It’s gone full circle! But like always the jobs get added to the joiners list for no extra money! 👎😞
Nice one for this ash, been asked to jump on facia & soffit Monday morning…haven’t done a box end in about 3 years so this is a life saver🫣
Hahha glad I could help out! Thanks pal! 👌👍 Hope it goes well!!
No requirement for birds mouths on the trusses?
No mate not on pre fab trusses
@@ashleydavenport3794 saves a lot of time
Nice job!!!..A true craftsman!
Cheers! 👍
Great video mate, where would you put your straps on an attic truss??
Cheers mate, would be accross the ceiling cord (under the floor boards) and then just up the roof like normal, but not straight like we’ve done them because it’ll get in the way of the plasterboard. If that all makes sense haha
What a small 3 bed that looks 😬
Yeah they are small!! 😭 be top dollar aswell haha
Nhbc won't accept 4x1 nailed to u/side of diminishing trusses on our site only accept 4x1cut min 12" and cut on pitch of roof to be fixed under every truss where meets diminishing truss
You can’t see it clearly there but it’s a 4x2 cut with the angle of the roof on it! Yeah we used todo it like your saying too! All a load of rubbish 🤣👎
Absolutely great video on how to do a box end Many Thanks. 5 stars Keep up the good work

They even have a duplicate listing on their own eBay account that's $200. I'm thinking of ordering the $130 one just to see if I get the full kit.
Im halfway thru my level 2 site joinery n watching your videos alot. I've clearly a lot to learn 😂
Keeep at it pal! It’ll all come together 💪
Yep I do it the same way, another way to do your lay boards is get the bottom of the lay board in the right position and then swing the top up or down until it eyes through with the plane of the girder, put a temporary tack in it, do the same the other side but you'll have to press the mid point of the lay board down so it touches the roof whilst you eye it through the plane as the top will kick up where it overlaps the other. Where the two cross cut them down the middle and it will work out the same. Hope this makes sense.
Yes mate I used todo the eyeing through technique and still do that to double check. But when you only have like 2 trusses at the front it’s hard to get a good average sometimes haha! Cheers for your comment 👌💪
@@ashleydavenport3794 yes agreed, sometimes you only have the girder so you can't really eye it through the plane, then you have to measure it up, you really need at least 4 trusses stood up to be able to eye it through right 👍

I’ve got one mate. Need to get in the 21st century don’t I! Just stuck in my ways of doing things 🤣🤣
@@ashleydavenport3794 no harm in that, if it works it works
I am Romanian, and I've built many roofs home but the way you are building a roof here is absolutely shit......
Dont you have to put damp course under your plates? Nhbc down my way would have a fit, reckons it stops the plates drawing moisture out of the screed/concrete, also make us do 400 centres but on some sites they use metal stud at 600 centres and no centre noggins??
Yes mate we have to use damp on the ground floor but this is on the 1st floor (joists) so it’s sound. But now we have to put damp on the walls! Hahah getting silly now. 600 everywhere apart from bathrooms walls for us!
@@ashleydavenport3794 damp up the walls!! Someone's bright idea that is useless, if you've got damp coming through the block work you've got problems 🤣👍
@@ashleydavenport3794 yes I should have spotted it was first floor hence no damp, only been doing it 26 years 🤦🤦🤣
@@dannym670 I know mate, the manger goes for all these awards and it’s just a pain in the arse!! Hahah
Where is the expansion joint? Also if you pin both sides of the cover strip you also dont leave any room for movement. This stuff moves in the heat
Expansion joints are in the long runs of fascia/ barge. Yeah a lot of people have mentioned that but I’ve never had any issues with it or been called back to sort any. Maybe I’ve just been lucky haha
Shiniest estwing I've ever seen ! Lol
🤣🤣🤣 always gets a polish before it goes live pal! Hahaha
Not too bad that. Better cutting the box end first , then the return, so the return butts against the box end, so it allows you to cover the barge board to box end straight joints with the long corner, as the barge board comes past the return piece and sits against the box end, by just notching out the lip on the barge to pass the return.
Yeah man a few people have mentioned that way! 👌
No shit lol they don't have a clue vented soffits been about since stone's
I've never seen a box made like that I've done the job for 19 years
Nice mate, everyone has there methods haha
Yeah I get but when the roofer comes in an puts his overvent on there's going to be a 20mm gap because the angles are wrong
@@richarddeville2733 overvent only kicks it up like a batten does all the way up the roof. And the dry verge caps hide all the end battens etc, in fact they hang down quite abit so cover like 2” of the barge and box end
Yeah I no that lol
@@richarddeville2733 we don’t actually use over vent on that site anyway. So the gap would be almost parallel anyway. So either way it wouldn’t matter haha
Should the soffit be touching the brick work, or should there be a gap?
Yeah it touches the brickwork! So there is no gaps for wind, bugs etc
do these types of roofs always work to drawing when setting out? love the videos btw, always a good watch
Pretty much mate. There’s always a little bit to get over with the building not being perfect. But not far off! Cheers mate! 👌
@@ashleydavenport3794 do you have an instagram?
He just as quick and probably cheaper to just get the brickys to build up in block work. All these new ways aren’t always better
Yeah I’d say so too pal. So much stuff involved with the panel that it isn’t quick or easy anymore 🤣👎
Thats not easy to change out over 20 years..
I don’t think it’d be too hard to be honest. And if it’s not all trapped down properly it rattles in the wind so it’s just one of them Hahha
That’s a boxend of some1 who hasn’t a clue tbh I’ve been doing this 22 years that’s a terrible boxend look me up and I’ll send u photos of proper boxends 👌
I’m alright cheers pal! Haha
Nice workmanship.
Thanks!
If you set that box section back a bit on the right you can use the ripped down corner piece to fully cover where the barge board meets it.
Brilliant demonstration - cheers mate
