Altra Vanish Carbon 2 after 100km #shorts
Another race, another PB. How well did the Altra Vanish Carbon 2 perform?
For a "natural" running shoe that is supposed to be zero drop, I really had a hard time with the @altrarunning Vanish Carbon 2 initially. Bloody ankles, painful feet. Not what I'm used to with my favourite running shoe brand.
But they did deliver when I needed them most. Improved my half marathon PB to 1:36:10 (down from 1:38:52). So they'll remain my race day shoe, but not one I'd wear for training sessions.

Thanks for the review. Would I have to size up at all as my normal ASICS trail shoes causes sore toes after a 3 hour run. Especially on the smaller toes
@@tomwood5247 I'm afraid I cannot compare to other brands, but I have heard from others that Altras tend to me on the smaller side. I always size up for running shoes, especially for that reason 😅
Lone peaks have been my favorite, the olympus are great for the road but I definitely prefer the ground feel and flexibility of lone peak, I'm looking forwars to an in depth review of these!
Where is the best play to buy these in the UK? Are they out yet?
@@Sinc28-95 as far as I know they're already available on the Altra website. I'm afraid I don't live in the UK, so I'm not too sure about other retailers
@TDMiller Thanks for the info!
Up and Running stores, amongst others. Altra website has store list. Some stores are doing demo runs where you can go run in the shoes.
Is the sizing the same as the 8 version ?
Yeah, pretty much the same. I don't see or notice any difference. 👍
mate i saw it today, im curious about the sizing, should i go to true to size? im size 12 what you recommend?
When is the wide version available in EU? I know it’s only that black colour that will be available in wide, but the Altra EU website doesn’t have the wide fit option available which is so frustrating
I'm not sure actually. Usually it gets released at the same time.
Price increase?
@@danrod305 not in Europe. As we're not getting the "regular" LP9 I cannot compare prices, but the LP9+ is the same as the LP8 (150€)
@TDMiller interesting! So no Vibram premium
Is it now stiffer with Vibram? The same thing with the timp 4 to 5?
@@renobacolod3681 that is my impression after my first run in them. The Vibram Megagrip is simply stiffer, so there's not much Altra can do about it. Although I do have the impression it gets less stiff over time with the Timp 5.
@@TDMillerI really hope the toe cap isn't a issue that was one of the reasons I liked the lone peak shoes because they were very soft🤨
We need your foot length in cm, and which size you order. How much volume the shoe has and how it differs in fit from previous models?
Thanks a lot, very helpful! So you recommend getting the Hiker GTX half a size smaller than the regular Timp 5s?
@@timostammberger or other way around 😅 I prefer my running shoes to be on the larger side, to prevent kicking my toes into the toe bumper, so I always size up, regardless of the brand. As for the Hiker, I use my casual shoe size.
@ Gotcha, thank you and agreed 👍🏻👍🏻
The only thing I dont like about these shoes is the outsole. It wears out incredibly fast. I really like the shoe but its not a supershoe. For example I have the Saucony Endorphin Pro4, that blows this shoe out of the water.
Haha guys just look at the syllables coming out of his mouth: "Altra Lone Peak Nine Plus"
LP9 👍
Curious to see y review
Torin 8. I got that same colorway from RoadRunner Sports. I was surprised to see it on their site!
Torin 8. Or maybe Flow 2’s
Olympus 275 👀
Gotta be the Torin 8, which is gonna release on Feb 1st
I really appreciate these videos. They have helped in my shoe search for something a bit more cushioned for the road but can handle a more gnarly shoulder.
@@mindieoriger5790 thanks! I'm glad my videos have been helpful. I've been somewhat inactive lately, so it's encouraging people are still watching 😊
My money's on the Lone Peak 9+!
Judging by the colourway, it must be Lone Peak 9+.
I wore Altras exclusively from 2018 until 2024. I have since quit purchasing them because the build quality it hot garbage now. My experience (over 3 different models) is they start falling apart at about 100 miles and are completely useless for running/hiking at about 250 miles. In fact, I’m pretty sure I could see yours delaminating as you were talking about them.
Yes. The whole thing with low stack height and zero drop is that it makes you run better! No bad knees ❤️
This year Escalante became my winter shoes (-5°C and below). For warmer days, I usually wear Escalante Racers.
Absolutely love these shoes; use them for my speed intervals and tempo runs. I’ve brought another pair for my rotation as they are reasonably priced compared to all the other Hyped up brands.
Thx for the video, and the sizing. Sadly, way too expensive for me. Much appreciated all the same.
They are in the sales now and you can get them for less than EUR 100. That's a fair price for a shoe whose outsole disappears at the speed of light. 🙂
Hey TD Miller! Are you willing to share how you because a product tester for Altra? I’m also an Altra enthusiast and would love to have an avenue to deliver comprehensive feedback. Willing to DM me? Thanks!
Wish I had watched this before I bought mine. I hate them. Same issues with bleeding heels and lack of support underfoot. Back to the escalante racer for me.
Is this zero drop? The website says 4mm drop
@@superflyregularguy they're zero drop. That would be a mistake then. On the US website or other?
I just wish they had colors that were more basic.
Im coming back to my Altra go to guy TDM: did you experience any issues with the outsole durability? the glued rubber strips on both of my Rivera 3s start to peal of after only 250k (the glue is as the Rivera 4 seems to have the same outsole I'm not sure if I should buy them even though the 3s fit perfect
@@fidru after >330km I've not had any durability issues with the outsole. The midsole is slightly worn down, but not too bad imho.
now that I own a pair of Rivera 4 myself and did 4 runs in them, they are unfortunately leaving my shoe rotation (maybe I will use them as a gym shoe but not for running) a) they are definitely smaller than the threes. but not only a tiny bit shorter but way more shallow and more important: the outsole is 2mm more narrow (which is ridiculous as it already is altras slimmest shoe - shoud have called it "extra slim fit") b) the ride is way harder than it was in the three which disqualifies them for me as an easy/recovery run shoe. Even though I din't like the upper and terrible laces of the threes I will keep on using them. I guess the outsole issues came from the fact that I did a lot of treadmill runs in them
How is fit compared with regular Timp?
@@slavasss2189 Altra actually gave me the GTX in half a size bigger. I'm not noticing the size difference tbh.
If someone does short runs (or walks only), a GTX shoe will do. For longer runs it's only a nuisance, because the moisture will get inside anyway, but breathability is always significantly limited. Tested on myself, not an armchair opinion. I do 300 km/month all year round.
Will you get the timp 5 boa? That could be great, if everything works
I'd definitely like to give them a try, although it's not something I really missed. I'm fully content with regular laces, but I can imagine that if you're racing in Timps, that BOA would be beneficial.
200+ km is still nothing, so it's too early to talk about durability.
There was a time when they seemed to have a problem with midsole compound formula and it resulted in these surprisingly and unpleasantly firm shoes: Via Olympus, Paradigm 7 and Outroad 2.
Great review thanks. Seems like a good midpoint between "traditional" running shoes and more minimal/barefoot ones (which I love, but aren't ready for longer distances in). How have these held up over time in terms of comfort and durability?
does the timp 5 gtx has gusseted tounge ?
How is the length compared to the timp 5, been running in the timp and the those fit true to size for me. I always have to size down in the lone peak
I am about to order this Racer 2 mate, I wear 9.5 UK in Saucony. People say they r true to size compared to escalante 4. So shall I go with UK 9.5 or 10, please help
Hey! As far as I know, Altra tends to be on the smaller side, but I cannot say anything about Saucony. My experience is that both the Escalante 4 and Racer 2 are the same size. When in doubt, I'd size up. In casual shoes, I'm usually an 8 UK, but for the Altra's I wear casually I'm 8.5UK, but running shoes I go for a 9UK.
@TDMiller thanks a lot for your prompt response mate, 🙏I ll size up to UK 10
I don't run (at least not at the moment) and I just am looking for a zero drop shoe for walking dogs and casual wear. I prefer something thicker than typical minimalist shoes which are usually very thin. I have the Feelgrounds with cork insole at 8mm. it is fine but I want something thicker. idk if Escalante 4 and racer 2 are good options but they're on discount now so are they good options ? if so which one would be better ? difficult to decide
@@person737 I'd go for the regular Escalante 4. It looks more casual too. The Racer's upper is like a net, so you'll be seeing your socks through them.
@@TDMiller thanks for the quick response. you think Escalante 4 is a good option for someone like that likes minimalist shoes but wants something a littler thicker ? I bought whitins running shoe since it is cheap too but considering the escalante now since it is on discount. I will see which one I like better (whitins yet to arrive)
@person737 definitely! I love wearing mine casually. They're not crazy minimalistic. Probably more minimal than mainstream, but with enough cushion.
I miss Escalante 2.5.
I had issues with the 4's durability so this is good to see
Good grip and good cushioning, but after some months my Timp 5 continue to be stiff and rigid in the toe box and in the Achilles zone, with some pain after 4-5 km
Good morning! I admire this type of Altra tennis shoe because of the wide toe and the sole of the sports shoes, here in Brazil you can't find this type of tennis shoe. Is there a website that sells this model of tennis shoe, or similar, for Brazil?
