Hey Timothy! Loved hearing your take on the Altra Rivera 4. It's great to get such candid first impressions straight from someone who knows their stuff. I just bought a pair of Altra Timp 4 - can't wait to use them at the upcoming trail races. Keep up the awesome work, dear friend!
Thanks for the first impressions! I'm struggling a bit with the Torin 7, in particular with the heel counter which is much stiffer than the Torin 6. It's manageable but it can irritate my Haglunds on one of my feet. The heel counter looks softer in the Rivera 4, is it also the case for the 3? I might try to get the 3 on discount.
All three (Torin 7, Rivera 3 & 4) have very similar heel counters when it comes to stiffness. Although the Rivera 3 does feel the least stiff, but not super different when I compare side by side.
I've heard people disliking the Torin 7's heel counter before, but I've not read the same about the Rivera 3 or 4.
Hope this helps!
I have tried Rivera 1 and 2 but the midsole feel dead to me, it doesnt feel running shoe. Very different feel compared to Escalante serie. Love Escalante 3 and the Racer.
I love my R2 the only thing the outsole is not durable, hopefully R4 is better
I used the Torin 5 - bought a few pairs, and I'm finally out. I hate stiff heels, use Lone Peaks for trails, and I find that a size 11 in their "original" fit or 12 in their "standard" works, although I prefer that 11/original fit. Which of their shoes should I get to replace my Torin 5? The Escalante 4, or the Rivera 3?
If you prefer the original fit, you might not like the Rivera, as it's significantly slimmer around the forefoot. I have not tried the Escalante 4 yet, but I loved the previous versions, so I'm looking forward to them. Previous versions also had nice flexible heels, so I'm confident they'll be great.
Two months ago Brian went on the doctors of running podcast and said they’re going to get rid of slim fit and just do standard and original
I listened to the same podcast, but I don't remember him saying that.
I do vaguely remember them saying they'll be ditching the footshape categories, and rather go by running shoe "experience" like "flow", "feel", "comfort" and "speed". 🤔
@@TDMiller ohhh maybe I got confused then. Have you had any issues with the upper tearing on the Torin 7’s. My upper get holes in the inside heel cup and at the bend points on both my pairs. I ran on dirt and sand mostly and wonder if the dirt dried out the upper material.
@@brewlovinrunner the heel cup tear is a common issue for me, although I do blame myself because I'm not always as careful when I pull them off after a run 😅 I've never had an issue with the upper tearing, but I've seen a lot of pictures online from others complaining about same thing. 🤔
@@TDMillerif i recall it was the 4f’s: feel, float, forward and fast 😉
@@hazhuz exactly! I knew it must have all had the same first letter
How’s the foam compared to the Escalante 3? I tried the Rivera 2’s and found them to be way too stiff and clunky. Like the Escalante 3, although a little more bounce would have been nice.
I find it very similar to the Esky 3. They're nice and bouncy, but not too squishy. My Riv 2 are stored away, but I can't remember exactly how they felt when they were new, to be honest 😅
You seemed a little concerned about sizing. Do you think size up 1/2 size? For example, how would this compare to Outroad 1 and Rivera 2? I had to size up 1/2 for both.
I don't have those models at hand, but can take a look one of these days. I also sized up for the R2 and would have liked to do the same for the OR1. R3 was better, but the R4 feels just ever so slightly shorter. Nothing too noticeable, and I think I'll be fine with my regular size. I'll double check with those older models later.
@@TDMiller thank you!
The Rivera 3 was inusable for me,too shallow on the upper and the height of the sole take away any ground feeling.
Even if in this new edition may have improved the upper, this top push up isn't something that I like.
But the new Altra Escalante seem to have a softer sole, if the upper is sufficient, maybe interesting.
Just ignore slim fit😅 i go only with OG, and altra should understand why we customers love it......not for narrow shoes ofcrs
@@slavasss2189 What do you refer by OG?
Sneaker?
If you mean that I tried two differents brands on one the sole wasn't enought flexible while on the other one the width was too narrow ... ☹️
@@slavasss2189 I run Altra for zero drop, not for the width, slimfit also suits me so would like to keep that please 😅
@@nonsolorasatura9093 i mean og fit style in altra- lone peak, olympus etc
@@slavasss2189 Ah ok, but I doubt this will happen.
But I will be happy if some brands make causual shoe with ergonomics form in mind, zero drop or eventually 4mm drop, plus 24mm of soft sole.
Altra is always recycling the materials from one version to antother, business wise It's wise, customer wise It's not.
With each new shoe version, Altra keeps adding a bigger and bigger rocker and keeps denying it like we're morons. Shameful behaviour. Just admit it, there's nothing wrong with it. We'd completely understand.
Interesting point! Do you think they actively deny it, or simply have tunnel vision while developing their shoes? In German there's a word for "operational blindness" making it hard to see certain aspects that you work with on a daily basis. Just a thought!
@@TDMiller That's a good perspective. I didn't think about it. Thank you!
