  • Finally the Altra Timp 5 and Timp Hiker have been released, with the awesome Vibram outsole. This shoe is an amazing upgrade from the Timp 4. With the Mont Blanc Carbon coming out in the next months, I'm busy testing the latest trail running shoes by Altra of 2024.

    Timothy, your journey from the Timp 2 to the Timp 5 (& Hiker) had me hooked, hehe! It’s like watching a saga of evolution, where each chapter introduces a cooler, more advanced character. It’s funny how a good color can turn us into instant fans, right, hehe? Can’t wait to see how the Timp 5 holds up on your race day and if the Hiker becomes your new go-to. Keep those reviews coming; your insights are as refreshing as a cool breeze on a hot trail run! 🌞

      I could not resist. BTW, I wanted to order from the altra webshop, but left it in the basket for a few days to think it through whether I really need a new pair of shoes, and then after a few automatic reminders by Altra, they sent me a 15% discount code to convince me. Worth a try!

    ❤"...simply because I'm a sucker for a good colorway!..."😂 I just purchased the new Timp Hiker GTX in Altra "Puke Green🤢" jk: beautiful Dusty Olive, because I'm a sucker for blending in with the forest floor! I'm really excited to get my first pair of Altra hikers after wearing Vasque's for many years of hiking. For running mild trails, I've been enjoying the Outroad 2 based on your trial recommendation. I can't get away from the Escalante Racers for road training and race day ... at least 7 years now! I love the consistency of the Racer design. I just ordered a pair of Rivera 3's to see if I can get some longevity out of a trainer design... but race day will still be the Racer! (partly because I am scared to make another Vanish investment after they "blew-out in less than 105 miles!) Thank you TDMiller for all your honest video based guidance! I appreciate it... VA

    I use the Timps for trail running (as well as Saucony Xodus Ultras) and also use my older running Timps or Lonepeaks for hiking. I decided to try Merrell Moab Speed (mainly, like you, because i loved the colourways) and they've been great but they are a 10mm drop. They've just released a new version and at the same time ive just discovered the Timp Hiker so now im torn between the two. Thats a long winded way to say a review of the hiker would be amazing 😉

    The heel construction and fit, is it comparable with any other Altra? I love my Lone Peaks and recently got a pair of Olympus 5s for more cushion during longer runs, but I’m struggling quite a lot with the heel lockdown where the Olympus just feel a little too “shallow” to prevent my heel from slipping up and down. If the Timps heel construction are more like the Lone Peaks, I believe I have to give them a try…

    What's your thoughts on the feel underfoot. Does the midsole feel similar to the Timp 4? Minor toe rocker?

    • @TDMiller
      @TDMiller  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Not much of a rocker feel to it tbh. Not as crazy as the Mont Blanc imho.

  • @douglascarrphotography
    @douglascarrphotography 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hi TD so have Altra removed those drainage holes in both the mid and outsole if so the midsole would probably be much better than the Timp 4, the boots look nice and probably lighter and better than the Olympus boots

    As always great wide, short and to the point!
    Im thinking of buying the Altra all weather mid 2, but after discovering the Timp 5 hiker i got unsure which is better for me. Look is important since i will use the shoe as everyday winter sneaker, not a hiking tool.
    I my view the Altra mid is more sneaker and timp hiker nor rugged outdoor tool.
    Any thoughts?

    • @TDMiller
      @TDMiller  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! I'm no good at adding fluff to videos, so I keep it short and simple 😅
      My preference goes to the non-water resistant shoes, as the goretex membrane does make the shoe a little tougher, and if you don't need it, I'd go for regular shoes/boots for everyday use. As for hiking boots vs sneaker style shoes, it's a preference. I usually prefer sneaker that are easier to lace up and take off, but boots do look cooler 😅 and they add ankle stability.

  • @karelbracko
    @karelbracko 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hi TD im wondering if Timp Hiker Gore tex are for Trail run used. My issue with Olympus hike low and hike was the Leather upper and by high model was the last 2 holes at lace was so uncomfortable and made me such high pain it was no fun to run in them in snow . To now the best system in lacing is the Boa fit system and it canceled the pain in downhill ING and great adjusting makes the shoe the ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐rating. Price increase it might be around 20 $€£

    I wonder if the only difference btw timp 5 and timp 5 hiker is the height? Why they call high version hiker, and not runner? They position both shoes as hiking, not running??

    • @TDMiller
      @TDMiller  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      There are quite some differences between the two shoes, besides the height. Only real similarity are the footshape, stack height and outsole. Other than that different uppers, protection, laces, lacing system.
      They can both be used for hiking, but some people prefer more ankle supper fort hiking.
      The Timp Hiker is based on the Timp, therefore the suffix "Hiker", as the Timp is originally for running, but also good for hiking. I hope that makes sense?

    In other review they say timp 5 width and toe box is smaller than 4.....you say its similar?

    • @TDMiller
      @TDMiller  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      My initial impression is that it's the same. Not sure why others have a different opinion, but I'll keep an eye on it for my upcoming longer runs. People have been saying for years that every new version feels more narrow compared to the previous one. My guess is that shoes just stretch out over time, making the previous version feel wider than a brand new pair. Just a thought though 😅

    Hi, new subscriber here - love your work 👌
    Question: I'm looking for a race day altra shoe for an ultra the alps, and I see the mont blac boa is on sale for the same price as the timp5. Quite different shoes of course, but curios to know which you would go for?
    Thanks again for your in depth reviews, very helpful. 👍

    • @TDMiller
      @TDMiller  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Awesome! I really appreciate the support!
      And I love that question. Basically, because it's the question I'm trying to answer myself right now. Which race are you running?
      The Timp 5 is slightly lighter than the MB BOA, the outsole tread is more aggressive on the Timp 5, and the Timp provides more protection overall in the trails. However, if I had to run a race today in the Alps, I think I'd still go for the MB BOA. I love the rocker geometry. The shoe just makes me want to run faster. The Timp feels a little too stiff for my liking.
      Hope this helps?

    • @NickSheppardsheppsta
      @NickSheppardsheppsta 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks, your opinion helps a lot 👍
      After watching a bunch of your videos I went with the MB. I figured the comfort and convenience of the boas from MB were more important than the extra protection of the timp5.
      The event is the Zugspitz Ultratrail (63km).
