Motorguide Xi3 kayak trolling motor BOW MOUNTED on Hobie Compass!
I could not find anyone selling a bow mount bracket for the hobie compass kayak so I built my own. It wasn't easy but it is possible and so far I have had zero issues with the stability and watertightness of what I did. The xi3 motor weighs about 30lbs with the quick release mount so you do need to be aware that the bow will be heavy and I don't recommend using is rough conditions, especially following seas. With the battery behind my seat and cooler as well, it does seem to balance just fine in normal conditions. As I mention towards the end of the video, there is a bit of a learning curve on how to efficiently use the motor while fishing and fighting fish, so as I continue to use it for different fishing conditions, I will make updated videos on its performance.
This video may seem to jump around a bit and that's because it started in December 2023 and took me roughly into April 2024 to finish. I ended up installing both a bow mount and stern mount using the quick release bracket screwed into 1" cutting board and then affixed that to my Hobie Compass 2021. Here is the link to the video of the stern mount install: th-cam.com/video/emJbgdYWsK0/w-d-xo.html

First keeper seabass and some good fluking on the Northshore of Long Island
มุมมอง 3.2Kวันที่ผ่านมา
This morning was absolutely stunning! I never get over the beauty of the calm Long Island Sound in the pre-dawn hours. For the fishing, it was a great morning of quality over quantity but I really couldn't find too much life out deep in the boulders so I moved back to the sandy shallow ledge and found a solid school of fluke (summer flounder). The porgies were mixed in of course as well. Great ...

But this year things seem different, the bottom fishing in general has been off to a very slow start in the western sound and the stripers are even refusing bunker at times. At the same time, the middle sound region has been seeing an absolute explosion of ...

I researched a long time to try and find someone who had attempted to put a GPS trolling motor in the stern or back of a kayak and didn't find much. "Ever tried to push a chain?" Word from Stan Sloan when asked about his mounting an electric motor on the bow of his bass boat in a BASS tournament, the very first member to do so. All crafts respond to oncoming force (wind, current) when their power source PULLS them along, allowing the rudder in the stern to steer the craft like the way a forklift would. A craft will be more efficient when going from spot A to Spot B being propelled from the stern, using a power source that turns the hull to achieve steering (a turning motor). A side-mount has to constantly correct the centerline of the craft, because it is pushing thrust with a side-force, causing the craft to naturally want to go in a circle. I've been boating for 50 years, I've seen everything from nuclear reactor-driven gearboxes spinning giant propellers, to cordless drills with a super-long rod and small prop chucked in them for propulsion sources. Remember all this. Hydrodynamics and propulsion. You cant beat a fishing vessel with a bow-mount motor and a good, stationary rotor to let the bow motor steer efficiently, for a vessel where the person is standing and fishing, especially with a breeze or wind. You cant sit and fish with a headwind, you'll be constantly correcting your bow, with a stern-mounted motor. They are better for going from point A to point B, .

The opportunities that opened up were more than I even imagined, and I genuinely love fishing from a kayak with pedals. Would I also love fishing from an outback or old town model? probably yes. 2nd comment... I use spinner baits to catch flounder in Florida. But....I'm fishing mud flats. Anyway... I use an Eagle Claw 90° L shaped arm. Not because they're the best. But because they have the smallest blades which let's them sink quickly and they sell them without the jig. Only the arm and the blade. So you can put any weight jig you like. I think your fluke might like a little spinner. They're only a buck a piece. BTW.... Did you know where the term "buck" came from??? .... Seemed good now but we'll see. But yeah we gotta be careful to not tighten that back idler cable too much as it puts a lot of force on the sprocket when pedaling. live and learn

    I was fishing the same morning, that sunrise was incredible. The double fluke jump had me laughing, replayed that few times. Nice job Peter, underwater was awesome too. Fluke were all schooled up, that was cool to watch

      awesome Bob, wasn't that morning just the best!! Hope you found some action out there too, haha that fluke was smart and I just started thinking how he was able to see the net as it was pretty dark still and the net is black, lol. Im glad you liked the underwater, was hoping to get a few more shots of them actually taking the jig but that will have to wait for next time 😊

    Beautiful morning,and nice quality fish. And you may already know but we can’t measure those sea bass from the long center tail.

    • @PeterRanieriII

      Thank Paul, I could be mistaken but the middle portion of the tail can be used to measure just not the top of the tail (aka the filament)

    Great video Pete! Did the Gulp work better than using Pro-Cure?

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks Dan, the gulp def outfished the pro-cure. I would still get a few taps and bites on the soft plastics with procure but everytime I dropped gulp they would swallow it, I really didnt even move it many times, just drifting a small piece on the hook would get bites immediately.

    What would really be helpful if somebody put out a "bait chart" of what to look for and when. From other fisherman I've heard that fluke followed the squid into the bays during the early months. Well did we have that or not? I'm guessing no since that isn't what they were spitting up when I caught them. I've seen them spit up shrimp yet why don't the bait shops sell it as bait? The sand eel "hatch" or spawn or whatever dance they are doing just happened in the sound and clearly video's were showing a very good bite during that time. We just had a really good first half of striper fishing in the bays due to a strong bay minnow presence (I'm guessing that is what they were). The rip at Orient was quite busy for stripers this year. Porgy's do their spawn and they disperse to where I'm guessing the clam beds/oyster beds are. The bigger Sea bass seem to prefer the Sound over the bays since all I catch are midgets. I'm just starting to see a crab hatch in some areas so I'm guessing that will be the new bait of choice (I'm assuming these are fiddlers). While at Plum guy there were a lot of 3-4 inch fish jumping out of the water. Again not sure what they were. Haven't seen bunker yet. Sorry for the long post

      great questions man - i wonder a lot of the same things. Its not easy to track the bait in so many different areas but I agree its the key to so much of where the predator fish will be. this is such a great topic though would love to hear what other people think as I'm trying to figure it out as well. the northeast is a very dynamic fishery with a lot of different migrations all happening at the same time throughout our season, I love it!

    Nice keeper fluke on that first one. Was also nice to see the bottom video with that many fluke swimming around. I also appreciate you saying that the sand eel "movement" has kind of played out.

    I was out that same morning. Water like glass, it was beautiful. Found myself in a cinderworm hatch in our area and that basically derailed my sea bass plans for that morning since current started moving quickly by the time I got to deep water. Outside of that, most of my success came on 5in gulp also, particularly salmon red. Sea bass has been tough so far, but seeing water temps hold in the low 70s should hopefully improve it in deeper waters soon 🤞

      @PeterRanieriII 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      thank you for sharing the report man, I really hope the sea bassing improves. Thats pretty cool about the cinder worms, did you find stripers in the mix there?

    • @steverazzano
      @steverazzano 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@PeterRanieriII oh yes, that was why my morning plans were derailed. They were so thick that they were running into the bottom of my kayak. Going to bring my fly rod out with me next time so I can catch them a bit more effectively if the worms are around again.
