  • Finally got the chance to fish a new area with Dan that we had been talking about for some time. We just tried to use the same techniques of deep jigging soft plastics along structure near contours that we typically do and had some success. I really want to get back out there at some point as there was just so much good-looking bottom to explore.

    Hey Pete, went out today. My buddy and I finally found the big sea bass. Was one short of a limit, literally we were catching them from 6:30am to 1:00. My buddy landed a 22-24 inch black fish on the first drift. Unfortunately season not open but we took a picture and sent it back. This was followed by the Sea bass attack.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats what I'm talking about Robert, nice! this was using clam or squid? monster blackfish! That's great to hear you found a good patch of keeper se bass, here's to hoping we get some new waves of them in the coming weeks, along with the blackfish!

    • @robertstorms5539
      @robertstorms5539 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PeterRanieriII was using clam on bottom and spearing on top. After a few of them spit up some crabs we would reuse them and we also used gulp 1-2 inch crabs that I had. They also were working.

    I have to say yesterday was the best day of the year to try a new fishing method for me which was using a 3/8 oz jig head with some watermelon zoom shads. First drop first fish was a 20 inch weakfish. Hardest thing for me is that fishing this light is light fishing with a feather when trying to feel the bottom. I also think the rod I had was a bit too stiff for this type of fishing since it was hard to get a good hook set on a lot of bites. Porgies just bite the tails off. Not sure I can fish this light a setup when there is stronger current.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  ปีที่แล้ว

      haha first drop of a new method is the best, confidence built. So you def need a lighter rod with 3/8oz to feel the bottom and the fish...when the current is too fast and you cant hold ill still go up to maybe 3/4oz with the jerk shad but after that using a drop shot is a better method I think. Thats the tough part about using small profiles in deep or fast water...if the porgies are biting the tail then I'll move to a paddle tail which they have a much harder time biting - awesome to hear this Robert

    A couple of togs have been caught on the inshore cod grounds by Block Island (season doesn't open until the 15th). On the cod trip I was on a couple weeks ago, a guy who was diamond jigging hooked up to something huge. It definitely wasn't a cod or seabass. It took off swimming like mad. It could've even been a mahi or yellowfin tuna. Both of which do hang around the Block Island wind farm.

    • @PeterRanieriII

      @@PeterRanieriII give it a try one day, but pick your day with the wind and i wouldnt go if it blows over 10-12mph on a kayak. you dont get the same wind protection there as you do in the western sound for some reason.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danm3340 good to know. Thank you. The current is stronger there too right?

    • @danm3340
      @danm3340 ปีที่แล้ว

      current is mostly 1.7-2.5 knots unless you're at the point where it can be up to 4 knots at peak. last time i went there i paddled out to 60ft right in front of rocky point. was about 2-2.5 knots there. you'll def get a leg workout. difference is is when you go to rocky/terry's pt.@40-70ft, even if you dont hold to a boulder, the bottom will be rocky anyway so youll catch keepers with the sonar off. One thing though is pick your days with trumans. Anything over 7N, 10W, 12E, 12SW and you're getting some white caps. The wind doesnt blow from S like it does in western or central sound. it blows hard SW and there's no cover. If there is no wind, highly recommend it, otherwise you can try mattituck, little bit less fishy, need to find boulders and hold on to them, but only 2knots and decent fishery, still better than central sound last time i went. i routinely go to mattituck now with the boat, as trumans is a 'open ocean' type of launch that mostly can be done only on kayaks@@PeterRanieriII

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha it’s a great question. If the launch is calm and I don’t have much stuff I can actually just walk on from the sand. But typicallly I will take my socks and shoes off, roll up my pants, launch, then put them back on. It’s just much more comfortable to me to pedal with them on

      good eye alberto, thats the stellar lite fast taper SG410FT70 star rod. Its actually called an ultralight but its def not an ultralight, maybe closer to light or medium and I also cut the tip on it. I do like the rod but I currently have it paired with a cheap reel that the drag washers slip when a big fish is on (thats partially why I think I lost that big fish). They make good rods, for the surf you probably want something a little longer and heavier though I think

    Hey I wanted to get into kayak fishing for striper and sea bass. What do you think a good beginner kit would be for lures/ hooks/ baits? Fairly new and would appreciate the tips. Thanks!

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Taylor. Happy to help as best I can. It really can depend on where you plan to fish but if you have some past experience fishing from shore or in freshwater, I would say to give the gear that you already own try first. Then see what would make it easier for you to fish from the kayak and then buy stuff as you go and as you see the need. A 7' rod with a 3000 size reel is typically good for most kayak anglers around here. As far as lures/hooks/baits...you can really go in so many directions with this. Maybe start with a simple "one-hook" bottom rig using clam? and if you start getting comfortable on the kayak and want to start casting and using artificial baits, its hard to go wrong with the jerk shad on a lightweight jighead.

    Lots of action. Thanks for sharing it with us. I fish the south shore, do you get a fall run of blues and bass in the western sound like in the spring?

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lots of action for sure, it def started out a little slow but once that current started moving it seemed a lot of fish moved in or just decided it was time to feed. In my limited experience on the northshore, the spring run of bass and blues is better than the fall. thats also why I typically focus on blackfish in fall
