Blackfish (tautog) Fishing close to structure is a melee sport - underwater jig footage

  • Had the opportunity to fish the bay for a quick afternoon session. Wind was blowing pretty hard all weekend and the water temps were down a little. I think the bridge had felt some fishing pressure during the weekend and the fish were a bit wary. They were willing to feed but it wasn't a super hot bite, and you'll even notice on the underwater footage that the bigger fish were not readily bullying the small fish away from the crab.

      Thanks! Yeah they don’t always do that. Not really sure if it’s high fishing pressured areas, lack of competition from a lot of smaller fish or just some sort of condition like the tide that just makes them much more wary.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks Paul, happy to hear that! The tags are from grayfishtagresearch.org and they essentially just have a serial # on them so if the fish is re-caught then the angler can input that # with their catch data onto the website and we can see how far it travelled, and how much it grew

    Hah....
    In the clip, the sound of cars going over the bridge is hardly noticed. But in person (at least the bridges I've fished), the car noise is almost enough to ruin the fun. Just the opposite of the beach noise.
    Thanks again because clips don't make themselves.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      very interesting indeed, seems your right, maybe the camera just does a better job of canceling out the car noise. I also try to edit out as much of the cars going by that I can. Always glad to hear your appreciation of the vids

  • @steverazzano
    @steverazzano 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Ayeeee that bridge definitely looks familiar. Fortunately, the weather on Saturday looks incredible, finally. Do you think the tog are a little lethargic from the mid 60s water temps? The guys at my local shop said that they are getting reports of 20-30:1 shorts to keepers in less than 30ft right now

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      lol yea been a while since I fished it. Almost looks too hot on Sat! but yah very much looking forward. hmmm its totally possible. they do seem to bite a little harder as the temps drop below 60F but that shallow water can fluctuate quite a bit in temp and the shorts to keepers ratio in the far western sound has been about that for at least the past few years I've fished it. Its only getting harder to find keepers in the western sound. It may get better in Nov. and I think it did last year...

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would add the CT side of the western sound is typically a bit better than the NY side

      Haha thank you, I am going well. I actually saw them in the water around the dock, it was crystal clear today. Stripers were swimming about as well. I was thinking of setting a trap to get to the bottom of this mystery. They almost had a king crab resemblance.

      @@CP-rp7yp haha dang well if theyr looking that big maybe it’s just a spider crab with growth at its claws? I’m pretty sure the mitten crabs wouldn’t be that big would they?

    something else I meant to ask you
    I looked up the link you provided for the dry suit you are wearing
    and it states that the dry suit will not
    repeat will not
    keep you dry if you fall in
    my friend since I know that you know this
    then can I ask how you feel safe if there was a capsize situation
    and as the water gets colder
    why are you putting yourself at such risk
    I am curious
    I am going to guess that you will say that even if you fell in you know that you would be back in the yak in less than a minute, so no matter what
    you will not be in danger of hypothermia
    because you will be out of the tank in less than one minute
    am I right?

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You bring up a great topic Steve but to say a semi dry suit won’t keep you dry if you fall in is not exactly true. The only only difference between a dry suit and semi dry suit is the neck gasket. A full dry suit has a latex gasket that seals better at your neck so if you go completely under the water then you shouldn’t get any water inside the suit. A semi dry suit has these gaskets at the wrists but not at the neck. The neck gasket is neoprene and isn’t as skin tight so if you completely go under you will likely get a little bit like a trickle of water inside the suit. A full dry suit is really more for something like white water kayaking where your constantly being submerged, a semi dry suit is better suited for a more leisurely activity on the kayak like fishing bc as long as your not completely submerged (like bobbing in the water with your pfd on) then your going to stay dry.
      The issue with hypothermia is a whole other issue. For this you do need to dress in proper clothing per the water and air temps underneath the suit because should you be bobbing in 50F degree water your going to want to be insulated a bit and the suit is just a shell.
      So yeah the risks go up as the water gets cold, and there’s only ways to help mitigate the risk. A drysuit helps a lot in my opinion but going with other kayakers, having a radio, etc are very good ideas as well.

    • @stevetautog880
      @stevetautog880 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      oh wow
      I agree totally , that the semi dry IS the way to go for kayak fishing versus kayak white watering
      so like I told you about that kayak I bought back in 2016
      well at the same time I got a couple of dry suits ( on sale from NRS)
      I did not even know of the semi option, maybe it did not yet exist back then
      anyway so, yeah
      sure enough the thing I hated about the dry was the damn tight neck gasket
      so now I know the is the semi dry option
      if and when I get back to fishing form a yak\ I will
      definitely get the semi option because like you said the PFD
      will keep your neck about the water line
      excellent
      actually
      hey I just had an idea,
      since I am never going to do the white water thing
      I do believe it might just be possible to cut the damn neck gasket (even a little)\ and presto
      no more annoyingly too tight neck while trying to enjoy fishing
      lol @@PeterRanieriII

    the blackfish are still being so picky for me, yesterday i went out for about 4 hours and i watched 1 boat pull in 3 very nice fish and lose a couple more and i had only caught a toadfish. Right near the end of my time though i pulled in a 5.5 pounder but it was legit the 3rd blackfish i put on the boat that day and the 5th fish in total.
