    Hey Peter, Gio here Western Long Island sound. Waiting for those slobs to make their way west. Went out on day one at my local hot spot but they were all short. Some of those fish traps with small buoys attached were sort of in my way, they weren’t here last year. Not sure what is up with that. Heading out again on Wednesday, conditions should be pretty much perfect. See you on the next one. Good luck out there.

      Gio! Sorry man I cheated and went east. Glad I went out though as this past weekend was not great weather wise. Yeah I noticed more of those traps in the middle sound a few weeks ago in places I hadn’t seen them before either. 🤷‍♂️ hope you get on them wed. It does look perfect for getting out, will be trying more west soon - thanks for the report!

    Nice video, great structure there. We've been able to get our limit in less than 2hrs (2 people) for 5 days Ina row. Fishing 20 ft and less. Once water cools we'll go deeper. Jigs and rigs

      Hey Joe, you aint kiddin. It’s really the ideal place for blackfish. Makes a lot of sense why you can do so well. Still that’s a pretty amazing streak 👍💪 I pro shoulda tried a bit shallower to start - thanks for the info!

    Havnt been out in NJ yet, but we just got back from OCMD weekend trip, fished mostly the inlet.
    Pounded tog in around 20-25ft.
    Excited to get out in the north east now!

      Awesome, Ive heard they can get pretty big over there in OC, isn’t world record from there?

    Nice job. Saw you out there opening morning, recognize the flag and cooler bag in front. Tough to do without a anchor. Get yourself a autopilot.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Paul, nice! I hope you got on a few as well. Wow I really see how autopilot is such a help out there, I'm really not used to fishing that kind of current. Thanks for the advice though, I've def been wanting one for a little bit now. Next time if you see me out there just give a holler, 🤙

    A frustrating day but so productive. Love the underwater footage, wish we had that kind of structure where I fish. Togs have already showed up down here in NC, I usually start targeting them next month, can't wait!

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      thanks! the underwater helps me alot too - but yeah very thankful this type of structure in around here. You don;t have boulders in NC? the tog just hold heavy structure like bridges there?

      @reelsaltkitchen 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@PeterRanieriII oh we've got some rock piles out here, just not where I'm comfortable taking my OT120 PDL, I'm not a fan of that kayak near the inlet or out in the open water. I've got some other spots around ports, walls, and bridges along the intracoastal where I get em.

    Great video! That current is making ME uncomfortable 😅. There are a couple of smaller rock patches near matinecock point that I was going to try this weekend. Hope to catch you out there someday!

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Lol steve that current was no joke, and I thought matinecock had a rip, lol. you totally might see me out there, def try to anchor up on the “unmarked” patches if you can. There’s a good amount of fishing pressure out there.

    • @steverazzano
      @steverazzano 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@PeterRanieriII yeah matinecock gets a ton of pressure so I was going to avoid. Most likely stick to a few spots I marked on navionics between the welwynn jetty and like...hempstead harbor bouy 1.

    you got some balls to get there in the cold lol...hope your return to land was alright. when wind picks up there are actual waves on the beach. i used to just hop out and 'swim walk' it to shore. and yeah i wouldnt go east of it as if something happens to your kayak after that, thatll be the end of it.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      hey Dan, thanks for all the advice prior to this trip - it really did help me. The return wasn't so bad, no issues really but for sure if I had stayed out another hour or so I think it could have been a bit dicey. With the drysuit I feel much more comfortable doing stuff like this. Yea it seems it rips faster east than west.out there, have to plan according to wind and tide, theres less room for error, especially in the cold too

    Tog season has gotten off to a red hot start. The boats are reporting double or even triple limits worth of keepers. But as is typical for this time of year, the offshore conditions on the cod grounds have been less than favorable.

    That’s a good spot.. the current can get crazy there though.. I fished there Thursday had a pretty good day.. opening day I headed east from the launch not as productive from me.. yes, an anchor is key

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Tom, you were right! I was going to go east initially to get more away from the obvious locations but the wind and tide would have put me even more exposed there on the return. But good to know, there’s a lot of good rocks around there can’t wait to try again somewhere nearby there. How’d you do that day I saw you, any albies?

    • @tomterrific2018

    Cool video. Drag about your anchor though. Next time try tying a second bottle or float to the first one with 4 or 5 feet of twine. The first bottle gets pulled under but the second will still be on the surface.

    Do you recommend using chum on the kayak?

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I just don’t think it’s always necessary. I’ll do it sometimes with slack tide and a slow bite but I really think the small fish pecking at your bait makes surrounding fish more curious and bring them in just as well

    what is your preferred blackfish setup?
    what rod and what reel?

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      if I know they arent going to be monsters and I'm in shallow water then I prefer my light spinning setup, the same setup I use in the summer for everything else: shimano teremar 6'-6" medium with last eye cut and daiwa kage 2000. Then I go up from there, this spinning setup used in this video (linked in description) would be my next choice, and then the conventional if its stronger current. I think theres many rods/reels setups you can use that will work great but for sure a sensitive tip and light line make it easier to feel the bite.
