    Next to sardines, mackerel is high in omega 3's. Healthy catch Pete. Eat em up. Thanks for report. No Porgy yet lower sound. Macks usually dont venture this far but hope they do. In the 70s they were a regular. Was a very popular party boat fish back then. People would load up garbage pails full.

    I remember a trip a few years ago when we were catching mackerel nonstop. We kept them because it was rainy and nothing else was biting.
    My Plymouth trip was a bust. Nothing was biting. I only counted about ten haddock all day, and no reds. I might do a fluke trip on Saturday. The fluke bite has been fair to good so far.

      @PeterRanieriII  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

  • @TheNockingPoint

    I have to get out and get some mackerel. They have eluded me in the past. Last year when I was waiting for the Albies to make there rounds at the south end of fisher island. I used a white crappie jig to see how big a Porgy I could get on those little hooks. It was a blast.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Haha I hope you find them this year, seems theyll have to eventually leave the sound and head back east. That’s exactly what my only concern was are those tiny little hooks meant for crappie on these jigs but surprisingly they held up better than I expected. Didn’t break any at all and you’re right it’s an absolute blast!

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      wow what a recommendation, that was an awesome video. Theres a lot of info in there I never knew. So cool how the oyster is essentially the mangrove equivalent in the south east where it provides habitat for juvenile species, and storm erosion. I really hope it works out and the water continues to get cleaner up here because it definitely seems that at least part of the work that has been done to clean up NY waters is working...

    • @francus7227
      @francus7227 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @PeterRanieriII
      I'm glad you liked it. The Great South Bay needs it the most.....
      In North Florida, we have oysters and no mangroves trees. The problem is this....
      Oysters can not live below or above the tide lines like a clam. They must have both air and submersion. This leaves them completely vulnerable to floating oil from street run-off. I don't have a solution. Cars without oil, brake dusts, tire wear, etc. is not an option..... Throw in pesticides, fertilizers, paint, plastics, etc.... The oysters have heavy obstacles to overcome.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@francus7227 oh dang I didn't know you dont have the mangroves in the north part, are you above st augustine? i see the issue though, and i dont have a solution either but I do think the main root of the issue is the runoff. when it rains all the pollution on the roads gets dumped into the waterway very quickly. I've heard people saying stuff like washing your car more frequently can actually help so that its relatively clean when it rains thereby making it a less all at once occurance. but yeah we need to figure out the runoff

    • @francus7227
      @francus7227 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @PeterRanieriII
      Yes, Jacksonville. Mangroves don't start until Coco Beach....
      The car wash makes sense. They use Dawn soap during oil spill cleanup....
      I'm sure boat motors contribute, too. But not like street run off.

That squidtrex looks pretty cool, im sure it would catch big porgys but they would also like bite the tentacles off and those lures are not cheap. • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Tony, this trip required me to haul the kayak over land as I transitioned from the bay to the sound and then back to the bay at the end so I figured it would just be easier to take the lighter motor. And also the wind and currents were low on this day so I didn’t see much need for the “spot lock” feature
