Dropping crab on boulders in the western sound

  • Part 2 of the October 11th day of fishing both the Eastern and Western Sound of Long Island, NY. I had lost my anchor previously that morning so I didn't spend much time trying to fish for blackfish (plus we already had our 3 keeper limit for the day). Instead, I just focused a little more on the deeper solo boulders that typically hold more seabass and porgy. It was a nice finish to an excellent day of kayak fishing.

      heck yea thats awesome to hear, ahh yea 4 keepers for outside the LI sound 😅i want to get back out in the western shallows and find some big ones - been hearing good things lately. Great idea on the anchor, really anything with some weight that you can tie a rope to works! the trickier part is how to deploy a quick rlease and not have too much rope in the yak

    issue is once you went there you will always have it in your head lol. id say the dec ramp 20 minutes west of it is best of both worlds, a little less current, little closer and still some good fishing. central sound isnt my favorite. western sound is really good too just i never had any luck with access. one time i launched off caumsett - phenomenal fishing too just we got kicked out due to no kayaking. wish we had more state owned land to launch from out west.

      @PeterRanieriII  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Haha it’s stuck for sure but I’m all about trying new places, now I’m very curious about the areas around that area lol. But as you mention the access is everything. I’m def gunna try that slightly closer ramp when a weather window allows. Yeah so much of the north shore especially to the west is private. That’s crazy you got kicked from caumsett, ive always wondered how I might be able to fish that area as well but seems like it’s a hike no matter where you start

    blackfish change their mind by the minute. Tuesday I had 6 keepers and 5 keeper sea bass pretty much all on slack tide, had 3 keepers on my first 8 crabs, let them all go because i was going the next day with more people. Next day had 2 keeper blacks and 1 keeper sea bass in 6 hours and none were on slack tide.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is in the same general area too? That is crazy but I believe it, it’s so true the blackfish are so hard to figure out and they humble me quick. I’m pretty sure I prefer a picking up tide or slowing down tide in most places. I don’t like it peaked out full speed but I also don’t like it dead slack. Generally speaking though I find the current to be good for them biting in the sound. In the bay I don’t mind a slack tide at all. But like you said it changes all the time it seems and I’ll fish whenever I can for them

      @@PeterRanieriII i was fishing where i think you consider to be near the edge of the middle sound and the western sound. i have only caught blackfish in 50 feet of water and nothing deeper and barely anything shallower, and my sea bass from 55-70 feet. When do you notice more blackfish moving deeper? im itching for some bigger ones to move in and just more keepers in general, the biggest i caught was only 19 inches.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      the next land mass that points out east of this area is yeah where I consider the middle sound basin to meet the western sound basin. then the middle sound basin turns to the eastern sound basin basically at riverhead where the north fork starts forming. Very interesting about the deeper blackfish...I think they are both deep and shallower this time of year just depends where you are. I mean last year I was still getting them in the far western sound in late late november in less than 25'. But yes typically they are even possible to catch from shore now and start moving deeper in november I'd say but again its hardly a rule.

    • @milesk14
      @milesk14 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@PeterRanieriII so i guess i'm not fishing on the edge of the middle and western sound, but its the middle sound. i'm hoping that some big ones move into the 70 foot areas because i have a bunch of nice rocks i would like to fish in that range.

      @@PeterRanieriII like you said wind blowing 4omph on the north side glass minnows pushed in by the wind plenty birds many surf anglers no hook ups. Meanwhile on the south was calm as a lake litery 20 steps away. Lost some friends that day small craft out of Conn. You may have heard. Anyways after battling the wind all day I googled a place on the south next to pylons got my limit on blks in 30 mins. Headed back out tomorrow

    RIP anchor! Did you have it attached from the bottom and zip-tied on top? Those are some silver platter scup! Wow. Question, on avg, how many green crabs do you go through per hour?

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      LOL yea i made a new one already since then. It happened in the last video, the current was so strong that it kept the bottle under the surface and I couldnt find it after i released from it! its prob surfaced when the tide changed but I couldnt wait that long lol - hmm i guess it depends but with a hot bit going I'd say 1-2 dozen per hour? I always buy a quarter bushel now and put them in a burlap sack, which will last me at least 2 weekends of fishing

    • @steverazzano
      @steverazzano 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@PeterRanieriII I see. That makes sense. Unfortunately, I don't really have a good place to store them where I live so I figured I would buy supplies based on how long I foresee fishing for the day and hope I get my limit before running out.

    • @PeterRanieriII

      @PeterRanieriII  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      haha Harry! you know what time it is, those big porgies are great - you really have to pinpoint the structure out there though, lots of flat muddy/sandy bottom in between, and the raised contour area is probably pretty good when the current is moving faster. I say go for it man, you learn a lot by exploring (as we've talked about) go get em man!
