Motorguide Xi3 kayak trolling motor BOW MOUNTED on Hobie Compass!

  • I could not find anyone selling a bow mount bracket for the hobie compass kayak so I built my own. It wasn't easy but it is possible and so far I have had zero issues with the stability and watertightness of what I did. The xi3 motor weighs about 30lbs with the quick release mount so you do need to be aware that the bow will be heavy and I don't recommend using it in rough conditions, especially following seas. With the battery behind my seat and cooler as well, it does seem to balance just fine in normal conditions. As I mention towards the end of the video, there is a bit of a learning curve on how to efficiently use the motor while fishing and fighting fish, so as I continue to use it for different fishing conditions, I will make updated videos on its performance.
    This video may seem to jump around a bit and that's because it started in December 2023 and took me roughly into April 2024 to finish. I ended up installing both a bow mount and stern mount using the quick release bracket screwed into 1" cutting board and then affixed that to my Hobie Compass 2021. Greetings from Missouri! I think I might mount mine on the bow now on my Compass. I’ve been back and forth looking for mounting ideas. I’m definitely going to use some of your ideas. Great content and God Bless your family and you brother!

      Awesome man, yeah I like both the bow and stern locations for different conditions. Let me know what you decide to do, it’s a fair amount of work to get that motor up and going but so far worth it to me. Glad to hear the videos helped you in some way!

      @PeterRanieriII  หลายเดือนก่อน

      love this idea! I researched the auto boat adapter before doing this, it had just came out. But i figured at $650 + $250 for the trolling motor and then building a custom mount for the motor would bring me into about $1000-$1200 and there just wasnt enough data out there on other people who had success with the autoboat except for the kayakDIY guy so I figured it was worth the couple extra hundred bucks to just do the motorguide. But please let me know if you do the auto boat with success, it looks awesome!

      @@PeterRanieriII will do, i would also do the motorguide but my main issue is the weight of it so I am opting for the autoboat for now. I can always upgrade so its not a huge deal.

    Pete, how has the xi3 been holding up? Overall it seems like a good motor but some complain that it sometimes has a mind of its own. Stops on occasion or can't get out of anchor mode without rebooting, for instance. Just want to check with you before deciding on Motorguide vs Minn Kota for my Outback. Thanks!

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  วันที่ผ่านมา

      So far its holding up really well. I have not had any issues with it starting or stopping by itself. Im sure minn kota is a great motor as well though I don't think they have a shorter shaft model. pretty sure the shortest is 54in with spot lock which is going to be too long for a kayak. Let me know which direction you go!

    Quick real question, how satisfied you are with compass, planning to buy a compass. It’s really helpful when a professional like you recommend a kayak

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think my opinion is a bit bias since I've only ever owned a compass and a passport but I love my compass. Without question it has been the single best purchase I ever made in terms of fishing gear. The opportunities that opened up were more than I even imagined, and I genuinely love fishing from a kayak with pedals. Would I also love fishing from an outback or old town model? probably yes. If you like to do mods yourself though and transport ease is important to you, compass is hard to beat

      I have both a 2019 Outback and 2022 Compass. They are very comparable performance wise but the Compass is about 30# lighter fully rigged. The Outback handles rough water better. My two cents.

      @@waterboy5164 I like Berkeley x9 the best right now and power pro super slick 8 would be my 2nd favorite. In general I like the smooth feeling braids not just for casting but the sound is greatly reduced through the guides. On my underwater camera I have like a 40lb heavy duty 4 strand braid and I can hear the braid rubbing the guides at the bait. Not sure if it spooks fish but I’d rather be as silent as possible
