Can you catch late season lobster in the Florida Keys? Yes! Besides, where else would you rather be?

We are frequently asked how is the lobstering in the later parts of lobster season. This time of year lobsters have been contending with commercial lobster traps and lobster crazed tourists just to survive. While they maybe a little harder to find good size lobster are still readily available. Besides, where else would you rather be than spending winter time in the Keys.

We never take from artificial reefs. We do remove illegally placed items, like lobster condos (PVC pipe) that were placed by people to lazy to go and catch them legally. Thanks for watching.
How did last Sunday, the single Florida residents only sports season go for you guys ? Thanks again for the videos.
@stevemcfarland875 - I will post some photos today. My youngest daughter and I paddled out into Cudjoe Bay at6:30 am. We were back at our dock at 7:15 with our limit. I went out on the boat to the gulf side in the afternoon and it was packed with people going for lobster.
Bow riding = high probability of fatality
I agree, and I know better. You'll see in an upcoming video part of the reason why I do this at idle speeds, and how I'm correcting the problem. Thanks for watching.
I think halfway between spanish harbor and no name key looks good. you can see there is an area in the middle that's cut out for some reason.
There are a lot of nice holes in that area, also along the East side of No Name Key there's a channel that was cut for houses that were never built -(its featured in last year's lobster video) its easy to see on Google Earth. And since you like kayak fishing try along the bridge between Big Pine and No Name. There is a ramp at Old Wooden Bridge Marina, or there is a trail on the SE side of the bridge. I've got plenty of Bone Fish around the Niles Beach area as well. Thanks for the kind comments and for watching.
As a kayak fisherman I've learned a lot from this channel. Even if you don't give specific fishing spots you made me realize there are a lot of differet areas to target down there. I'm basically looking for ledges nearshore to target stuff like muttons, grovers, grouper etc.
Thanks for watching and I'm glad the videos are useful!

Thanks for watching @sureshotmcgee1085
Google Earth's new off shore images of Lower Keys ocean side are useless now.
@goferizer - I know, the updated images must have been done after a recent storm, you can't see any near shore features. Thanks for watching!
@@goferizer newer data is obviously better but you can use the timeline to find clear images taken previously.
@@chris_bjj123 Thanks Chris I discovered that recently.
I have to wonder, if your sharing these spots, how good can they be? Most people would want to keep good spots to themselves. Granted some spots are obvious I had already earmarked Horseshoe Beach as a good possibility.
@davetackett8126 - some of these spots are not frequently visited, others are, like Horseshoe Beach. There is a high likely hood of finding keeper lobster at all these spots. Niles Road Beach is one of my personal go to spots. Plus, lobster migrate and move with the tides. Some places get replenished nightly, some don't. I l love the Sammy Creek patch reefs. Sometimes I get my limit in a few minutes, other times I'm lucky to find one. However, I do have a number of secret "honey holes" that I don't share. Thanks for watching.
@@lowerkeysliving Looks like I'll start at Niles Road Beach first, area does look promising! according to google maps it's around a 3 hr. trip to get there.
Niles is a great spot, you'll need to hunt a little to find the lobster holes but its such a beautiful you'll enjoy the paddle. Horseshoe Beach is tough for 2 reasons: 1 - its super popular and gets picked over daily. 2. It does not sit right in the tidal current so it takes a while to replenish. There are some good spots right outside of Horseshoe Beach if you paddle out. I went to Little Duck Key (Veterans Memorial Park) yesterday and it was packed with people scouting for Sunday's mini-mini season. Good luck and have a safe trip.
I’m coming down in a couple weeks and I’m thinking of bringing my boat. My only worry is that is seems like everyone has boats with outboard engines and mine is a 18ft bow rider with a inboard. Minimum draft is 1 and half foot and max is 3.5 ft. If I take my time and put around for the most part do you think it would be ok. I’ll be staying at that KOA there in sugar loaf key. Nice video also :)
@banksjeep - I'll start with that you'll be OK on the Atlantic side. I'm assuming the 1' is with the engine trimmed up all the way. The KOA has a great deep water ramp and sits right on the Bow Channel going out to the Ocean. Just be careful with the Bow rider going into waves. Cudjoe Bay, where KOA is located is between 4 - 5 feet all the way across so plenty of fun in the bay on wavey ocean days. On flat days you can shoot right out to the lighthouse. Does your boat have a fixed Top, or fold down bimini? You can get under the BOW channel bridge right in front of the KOA, but you really need to know the channel going into the back country, but once back there you be OK. I can share some routes with you if you like. Email me at keith@lowerkeysliving.com Thanks for watching.
Awesome I sent ya an email. I also included a picture of my boat I’ll be bringing. Thanks again 😊

Love how informative you videos are. This January will be our 4th annual winter trip to the keys from Wisconsin. We stay in Marathon and rent a boat for the week so your videos have helped a ton. Are the lobsters still in these spots and other shallow spots during the winter or so they go deep?
@@scottmartin2359 Yes, lots of lobster around during winter. They seem to be more abundant in shallow water during the colder months. January and February are my favorite lobster months. Thanks for watching!
Hey! Love your channel! Any advice on the best species to fish for in early August? We are going to Key Colony the Sat after mini season until Aug 10th. I had dreams of catching snowy’s, but they will be closed. Anyhow, any thoughts on what is hot that time? Thanks!
@winstonsmith4003 - Key Colony is a great place to stay!! You will be here for the start of regular lobster season, so don't count out lobstering! I just published a new video on lobster spots. But for fishing - Mahi should be abundant, this has been one of the best Mahi seasons I've ever had here in the Keys. Tuna have been around and should be easily found at the Marathon Hump. Will you have a boat? If not there are a number of great charters out of Marathon. But, August should be good for Mahi, Tuna, Yellow Tail snapper off shore. On the gulf side August is usually a good time for Permit in the channels just off the flats. The snowy season was slow here, they talked about closing it early this year because no one was catching any. I struck out on snowys this year, and we put a lot of time in deep dropping the last few weeks before the season closed. Let me know if you want to target something specific and I'll get you more details. Thanks for watching - Keith
What if you want to go out early, or stay late, just don't?
We go out before dawn and stay out after dark regularly. I've go routes on my gps devices tracked that I can follow. That said I always go far slower in the dark. Don't want to end up like this group did this morning here: www.flkeysnews.com/news/local/article289841849.html Thanks for watching.
Lower keys living, quick question for you.. I really appreciate the info for lobstering from shore, but the question I have , aren't some of these places closer than 300 ft to a commercial shoreline , I don't want to get in trouble lol 🦞
The 300' only applies during the "sport" or mini season and the first 5 days of regular season in most areas. Here is a link to the FWC brochure defining the rules - click on the Monroe County Brochure: myfwc.com/fishing/saltwater/recreational/lobster/ Thanks for watching!
@@lowerkeysliving thank you for the feedback , I really appreciate that I was going over the regulations earlier and I could have swore that it said that 300 ft range was in the single day bonus season , the two-day mini season and all of regular season, I could have misread it ,, thank you again.
@@stevemcfarland875 and it is just in front of commercial and residential properties. There are a lot of undeveloped areas you can go to within 300' to lobster as well.
Nice job on the video but in all fairness to the dolphin and stern weight, that motor is way too big for a 17’10” boat, especially considering it doesn’t have sponsons either. The motor weights 530 lbs vs a 115 merc at 360lbs. The dolphin is a fast hull and with a 115 would run as fast as you’d ever want to go. I know you bought the boat used and you get what it comes with but that motor size is ridiculously large.
@davide3129 - 100% agree with everything you said about the engine on the Dolphin. I have no need to go 60 mph on the Dolphin. The Envinrude has been giving me constant headaches as well. I just got a great deal on a new Yamaha 150. It won't save as much weight as going to the 115 merc, but it will cut 120 lbs of weight off the backend. of the boat. Thanks for watching!
July 12th or 14th?? You mention both dates in your video.
Sorry, it is Sunday the 14th.
Got it thanks, wanted to clear that up for your audience.

By the way great content and thank you for your time and caring, *GOD* bless you. MOST HAVE NO CLUE about that, and worse put trust in the go/v to keep it up dated and safe. and santa has flying reindeer.
Thanks for watching. I have definitely use my drones to scout some back country areas before I go.
With drones being cheap + -- and having 4k cameras, I would have one checking the area ahead of me also.
Definitely!!
I do a poker run every year down there and the bully stakes heading to Marvin’s are always tricky for me. After all the boats have ran through the water is so churned up I can’t tell which side to pass by. 😅
Thanks for watching, the shallow water gets easily churned up. Try and follow behind someone, but far enough back, so if they get stuck you know to go to the other side of the stakes :-)
Cheers mate. Great video
@theghostdad7288 - Thanks for watching!
Hey! Great video! I recently got a boat(scarab jet boat 12” draft) and live on Upper Sugarloaf. I put in at our ramp going straight into Bow Channel. I’m not comfortable with navigating the back country yet, so once I go through that small channel with the bubba stakes… could I head straight up to Johnston Channel to the gulf and shoot down to Snipes that way?
@zacharymiller3184 - yes you can. Just keep an eye out, the channel veers to the left after you pass Johnston Key. On a low wind day its easy to see. Thanks for watching.
How cool. Was at Tarpon Belly Key in March & wanted to snorkel in the far deepwater slot. Got there with the Spouse and sensed that the Tide had switched a lot sooner than I expected as I could see the current running from the Gulf to the Ocean through the slot. I feel I am hyper aware of Tides and Weather but can screw up too. We calmly “rushed” back to the boat to find it riding higher than when I left it (as planned) but boy did that concern me! I Love The Boating Life!!! Be well.
@kevinlynch6799 = The current does rip through Kemp Channel. Glad you were safe an thanks for watching!
Thanks for showing all the great navigational and super spots in the lower keys!! Congrats on a successful trip, minus the hooking. You did the right thing by going for a tetanus shot. Last time I got a deep cut, I was able to get a tetanus shot at the CVS pharmacy, so keep that in mind instead of a hospital visit. The ER's are usually packed and a long wait around my area.
@MEGA_SOKO - I definitely should have waited and gone to the pharmacy or an urgent care the following day - the ER in Key West was packed. It was a 3 1/2 wait for a tetanus shot. Thanks for watching.
😳
It was worth it!
Great day fishing. Those treble hooks on a thrashing fish are scary. Glad everything is good!
@josephprimavera2545 - yes they are! And I know better. . .I also usually cut the front set off, especially when I'm going for wahoo. It lets the lure mover forward more and tends to keep their teeth away from a leader. Thanks for watching.
One fish at a time, if you're a solo Captain. Glad you had good results and a good time!
@r8drvr819 - I let myself get caught up in the frenzy, I should've taken care of the Mahi completely before dealing with the tuna. Thanks for watching!
Try using the navonics relief shading and overlay your tide chart. It shows tidal creeks and any bottom structure it’s very accurate and has helps me back there a lot. Great video!
Thanks for the tip!! I will definitely try that next time out! Thanks for watching.
I only live a couple of canals down from you, I really enjoy your TH-cam channel! Would love to be able to follow you to marvin and lay down a gps track someday, or if you had an actual track you'd be willing to share (garmin or navionics). I have ventured on the other side of the bow channel bridge a few times, but got myself into places I didn't want to be! I will try to follow the map you drew on screen...but you know what it's like down here! It doesn't take much variation to get in trouble! Thanks for the videos!
Steve, happy to have you follow me out, or I can loan you my portable GPS unit. You can run out with it and follow my route to lay your track down. K
You can email me at keith@lowerkeysliving.com
Man this really opened my eyes to other possible places to look. I've never even considered looking in ledges around canals, but it makes total sense. Looks like the 300ft rule only applies to the sport season in Marathon! For the first time we are going down there starting the Saturday after mini season and staying for 2 weeks, so we'll get a few days with the regular season.
@winstonsmith4003 - so glad you found the information helpful. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing the lures and tips! My biggest takeaway from this session was the bullet vs flat face and lip based lures and how they grab weeds. Never took this into consideration and was really frustrated last time I fished in Pompano and continuously fought the small weed patches just under the surface. I noticed in one of your past vides that it looks like you're using outriggers that are set in the gunnels of the boat? If that's true, please make a video on your outrigger setup. I am at the point of contemplating outriggers mounted in my top or install in the gunnels, I'm just not a fan of making holes in the top material so am considering a gunnel mounted set. If you don't mind a suggestion, when you switched from the outdoor rod setups to sharing your computer screen on this video, the audio commentary was a little weak and the presence of the background music made it hard to hear your voice. Reducing the background music would make it a lot easier to hear you. Thanks for sharing as always!!!!
@MEGA_SOKO - Thanks again for watching. Yes, I have found the bullet or pointed lure heads makes a huge difference in catching weeds. I was planning on a video on the gunnel mounted outriggers vs. permanent mounts on the T-Top. And, thanks for the suggestion/critique on the audio - I'm usually pretty cautious to make sure the audio is even across the videos. I'll be more diligent on that.
Hi, do you have any insight in getting to the Content Keys from 7 mile/Bahia Honda? We'll be in Key Colony Beach in August and want to go to the Content Keys. Our boat is a hybrid bay that draws 19". I see markers in Big Spanish Channel that appear to take you up to the deeper Gulf, which I could take over to the Content Keys. Have you been over that way before?
That is definitely the way to go - just be aware a lot of charts still show channel markers that are no longer around (after Irma and Ian). I've only run out the Bahia Honda Channel once, kept just West of Big Spanish Key, with my 27' center console with a 22 inch draft. Had no problems. If you find a "neighbor" during your visit that has run it before see if you can look at his/her gps track of the route. Good luck, have fun and thanks for watching.
Great videos brother. Many thanks.
Thanks, and thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing these!
@MEGA_SOKO We hope it helps on your next trip out! Thanks again for watching.
🤙👍
Thanks!
My buddy has a place on Big Pine, so when I'm down there, we frequent Content for bugs often. I prefer that area after the mini season because it holds plenty of bugs between 15 and 30 feet. During mini season, it's way too busy there, boats packed so closely. I also like the fact that during the regular lobster season, there's plenty of space for multiple boats to explore the large area without being right on top of each other but most of the time I find myself there without another boat in sight. The largest Keys lobster I've ever caught came from here about 30ft on a tank dive.
@Mega_SOKO Thanks for watching. I love the content Keys, especially for lobstering. Almost always plenty of lobster around. I brought a group out their fly fishing yesterday for bonefish and permit. And yes it gets crazy out there during mini-season!
Awesome info. Any idea how lobstering in the lower keys compares to the upper keys, like the Islamorada area?
@ttb1513 -the good news is all the of Keys have an abundance of quality lobster spots (and lobsters). I've done a few trips out of Islamorada and had no trouble finding lobster.
What channel is that your talking about?
In which section of the video? Portions were along the Niles, Kemp and Bow Channels, plus some in Venture Out Bay (Cudjoe) and Big Pine Bite. Thanks for watching.
Hi and thanks for sharing your knowledge. I'm coming to the Keys in August to do some lobstering, I usually stay in Marathon but decided to go farther south this time due to Airbnb availability. I'm not familiar with the area. so, your videos have already helped me find a place to start. I'm staying in an Airbnb at the north end of Cujo Bay, I have a 20 ft Caralina skiff with a 130 Honda on it and I'm wondering about the water depth in that area. will it be hard for me to get out of the bay? I can usually get on a plane in 2 feet of water.
You're going to be in great shape with the Carolina Skiff. They are extremely popular with the guides down here. Thanks for watching.
I bet that does great on a windy day !!! I love the inshore stuff, Mainly because that’s all I do when I’m in the keys (back country bandit) 😂
Thanks for watching as always, much appreciated. It is great going straight into the wind and with the wind. Going sideways to the wind takes a little more work to hold a straight line.
@@lowerkeysliving Looks like a a good ride !! Maybe try a tad bit longer fins to help hold ya straight! That is if it’s a box fin set up
We are looking to buy a home-on upper sugarloaf. It has a dock that goes out into Bow channel. Can you get from Bow channel to the atlantic via kemp channel with like a 30=35 foot boat with twin engines?
@jaysankey9475 - We looked at the same area a few years ago when we made the move full time. The answer is yes, you can definitely access the Atlantic through the Kemp Channel. We use the Kemp Channel to access Tarpon Belly Key, the Content Keys with our twin engine boat. The tricky part is navigating from the Bow Channel over to the Kemp Channel. I know there are two deeper water options to do this: 1 goes out the Bow Channel into the Gulf, then head over to the Kemp Channel from there. There is a short cut across but I have not done it. If there is a neighbor in the area that know the route run it with them and bring along a navigation unit to record the route. We ultimately decided on a home on Cudjoe Bay on the Atlantic Side of the Bow Channel Bridge. 80% of my boat time is big game fishing so having direct access to the Atlantic was important. We can still access the gulf with our flats boat under the Bow Channel Bridge, or taking the lap around Cudjoe to use the Kemp Channel with the big boat. You'll add a good 30 - 40 minutes each way to access the Atlantic from the Bow Channel. Hope this wasn't too much of a ramble and was somewhat helpful. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful! Helpful. Thank you. Hopefully, we'll get there! :)
@angelapalermo9157 - Thank you for watching. Its worth the effort to visit.
Hi. I’ve watched a lot of your videos and subscribed. I get down to the keys a lot but will finally be bring a boat down. Classic Boston whaler (1960) 13.5. I’m very new to boat trailering and ramps. I’m trying to get practice in. (I’ll be alone). Question: can I beach up at blimp road easily while I park the truck and trailer? And at blimp, will I need to get moved at a certain time or can I stay out overnight and leave truck and trailer? SR 4A looks tricky. How about limits on leaving truck and trailer? I’d like to camp on a little island or even the boat and not worry about my truck/trailer getting towed by the county. Any tips will help Deborah
Hi Deborah, Thanks for watching! Here are a couple of thoughts for you. 1. Great to see you willing to trailer and boat alone, that is awesome. 2. I know people do leave their trailers/vehicles overnight on blimp road and I've never heard of anyone having a problem with theft while doing so. 3. Yes you can beach a small boat at Blimp Road while you park your vehicle, its rocky, but pretty well protected from most wind directions. 4. SR 4A is much tighter than blimp road to launch, retrieve, but there is a small dock to tie up to while parking your car. I know the FWC is planning to, if they have not already, charge to use this ramp 5. Another option is to use the ramps at Cudjoe Garden, really close to Blimp Road. They charge a small few but they have good parking in a really safe neighborhood. Hope this helps!
Thank you so much for sharing. My family is hoping to visit Looe Key in April. All the best to you.
@meadowbrookguideserve8359 - Thanks for watching. Looe Key is definitely a can't miss spot. We made several trips out this week while our daughters were off from school for spring break. It never gets old. Enjoy your trip.
Hi following along! Coming from nh my family owns a place in punta gorda going to sneak off to the keys for some snorkeling for a day or two which sites would you recommend sounds like you definitely know what your taking about thanks!
@@camski13 If you want to snorkel from shore try John Pennekamp State Park on Key Largo (they also run boat snorkel trips to the reef just offshore). Further down Looe Key is the best snorkel spot in the Keys (not including the Dry Tortugas). It is 6 miles off shore so you'll need a boat or do a snorkel tour boat trip (Capt. Hooks on Big Pine and Looe Key Reef Resort on Ramrod are both good guide groups). You can also snorkel from shore at Bahia Honda State Park and in Horseshoe Cove on Big Pine, but won't get the same coral reef experience. If you want to head all the way down to key West than Fort Zachary State Park has some really good snorkeling, but it can get cloudy/murky on windy days, but worth it on calm days. Hope this helps.
@@lowerkeysliving helps a lot thanks so much looking forward to the trip!
Hey, considering the issue that is happening now with certain near shore fish and skates being disoriented, I've heard the water bloom around Cudjoe could be a possible source of the issue. Wondering if you've seen this or have any thoughts on it.
@winstonsmith4003 - Thanks for checking in - I've been on the water everyday the last few weeks both in Cudjoe Bay and Venture Out Bay, plus the gulf side. I have seen no signs of the "spinning fish" syndrome. I was out lobstering in Cudjoe Bay yesterday for several hours and everything look perfectly healthy and normal. Loads of lobster, sea turtles, sharks and rays. It all look healthy to me. The was some of this same thing happening this time last year. With massive rains we are forecast to get tonight and tomorrow maybe whatever is causing the problem will get flushed out. I know people are seeing for Key Biscayne all the way to Key West. The first report I heard about it this year was in Key West about 6 weeks ago. A saw tooth shark in Geiger Key Marina. I was going to do a video on it, but I honestly have not seen it. Thanks for watching.
Excellent Unbiased Review of a Quality Flats Boat. Their website has more boat photos which show how flat and high out of the water it sits. Interesting that your Dolphin and this boat have much larger engines (115-150-175hp!) and thus larger fuel tanks than the “typical 60-70hp” Flats Boat yet sits so flat. Also liked the clean wiring. I drag my bassboat to the Keys for the month of March and “It’ll Do” but it surely is not the Best Solution. Because I fish in the Midwest US and in Canada into the late Fall, a full windshield is a real blessing against mosquitoes, cold winds, rain, sleet and snow. I have found you really need two boats in the Keys: Bigger boat with a Carolina flare bow for the Ocean and a Flats Boat for the shallows (like you have) is as good as it gets. But, a bigger engine does allow one to run into the Ocean on some days and would be fun slinging around in protected waters. When at a sandbar last week I saw and liked an Xplor X7 Flats boat where the top deck extended beyond the hull. Just thought it was an interesting design. Tarpon Boat Works 19’ design still beats it. Oh, and we took your TH-cam suggestions on Restaurants in the area and have visited some and enjoyed them. I would add the Square Grouper on Cudjoe Key and Hogfish Bar and Grill on Stock Island as two additional favorites. Be well.
@kevinlynch6799 - Thanks for all the excellent feedback! The folks at Tarpon Boat Works told me, event the the 115 HP is the standard engine, they have never had any take it, they all go for the bigger engines. I've never heard of the XplorX7, I will search that one out. And yes, I need to update my list of restaurants. The Hogfish Grill and the Square Grouper belong on the list. Thanks for watching.
