  • A promising update to last weeks video on the water clarity and purity. We flew the length of the Keys to check out the good, the bad and the beautiful.
    With the possibility of a tropical storm brushing us the week we are hoping for one more giant "flush" the clear up our waters.

      You bet, and thanks for watching. We just came in from trolling for mahi. Water looks great around Cudjoe and Sugarloaf once you get 2 - 3 miles off shore.

      @keithgilliam4973 - with the tropical storm/hurricane schedule to pass by us we should have enough rain and wind to give the last bit a good flush! Thanks for watching.

      @@lowerkeysliving this is great to hear! I have been coming to the Keys for years, but haven't quite been able to figure out all the factors involved to catch the clearest waters. I was actually wondering is the incoming hurricane had something to do with the water clearing? I was there as Irma was moving in.. we left about 2 days before landfall. The week prior was the MOST BEAUTIFUL weather and water I had EVER seen! Haven't seen it like that since. Glad to hear you think Idalia will clear things out further! I saw you listed your email in a previous comment. I may also email you for the map you mentioned. Thanks for the info!

      @@ashleyk1227 water was really really cloudy this morning - but its sand suspended from the storm - should clear out in a day. The strong tidal surge pushed a lot of fresh water through the bays and channels. I think we will have some nice water by the weekend.

    Happy to hear your daughter is getting into flying. I am a former Army helicopter instructor pilot and now a commercial pilot on the civilian side. If she needs any advice or help with any of her training feel free to reach out.

      @@lowerkeysliving no, I live in Tampa. I almost accepted a job with the life flight for the Monroe county sheriffs department but the cost of living didn’t meet the salary. So for now I’m just a tourist down there as much as possible.

      Completely understand, we got lucky that we bought our house just before the big real-estate boom. We'd never be able to buy what we have at today's prices. Plus, yes everything else is expensive. The home insurance kills us the most, in the last 18 months our wind/hurricane/flood insurance is up over $1000 from what we were paying when we first bought. Hurricane Ian put a hit on insurance companies and now we are paying for it.

      @@lowerkeysliving yeah man I feel your pain, I’m on a canal in Apollo beach (just south of Tampa) and my flood insurance is over 3k for a $300k dwelling and expected to go up $1000 this year.

      @tyronearango7373 - we have definitely seen it before too, but never this bad, or lasting this long. Bow Channel has, literally, looked like a sewage line for the last month + Even the folks I talk with that have been here for 40+ years say they've never seen it this bad. Hopefully the storm passing by this week will give it a good flush! Thanks for watching!

    Glad to here. We were down for a week in June and the water on the reef was nasty. We have never seen that poor vis before since we always come down for the month of October. Will be back down for the month of October for our usual lobster, spearfishing, and trolling trip.

      The water is clearing up. Cudjoe Bay, Venture Out Bay are still pretty green with algae, but everywhere else is looking good. Hoping storm passing by the next few days will give everything a good flush. Thanks for watching.

    I was at 7 Mile this weekend and the water was pretty clear. I have a question Do you know of a general area that has patch reef or rock piles close to shore where I could launch a kayak and get to them easily? Any info would help greatly.

    • @lowerkeysliving
      @lowerkeysliving  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can launch from Bahia Honda and hit the little island just off shore, they call it W. Bahia Honda. Lots of good reef structure. Its just under a half mile paddle. Also off Big Pine Key. Email me at keith@lowerkeysliving.com and I'll send you a map. Water is going to be rough the next few day but the weekend is looking good!

      @@sureshotmcgee1085 Thanks, we had some solid wind (gusts to 45) and a lot of rain, but no real damage. We got lucky this one passed by far enough off shore. I really did stir up the water. I'm hoping the big surge pushed enough clean water through the bays to really flush everything out. Planning on reef fishing this weekend!
