Great reaction! Thank you first for just getting past the marriages among the Targaryens. George RR Martin based much of this show and GoT on customs in Medieval Europe or the Ancient Near East. Those kinds of marriages were common among the royal families - although not the regular people - in the ancient Near East. Also, even cousin marriages have been common among European royals even until very recently. It’s impossible to enjoy these shows if one can’t just accept the historical references and move on. So many reactors insist on telling us how gross they find it. Every. Single. Episode. Yes, ok. We get it. But it’s how many royal families operated in ancient civilizations.

I really love inside out cause I feel like it’s a realistic representation of showing how mental health works differently for everyone My favorite is disgust 🤢 and joy 🤩 I moved across the country when I was 5 it was not fun so this movie is realistic ✌🏽💯

You have Father Alvito all wrong. Father Alvito is an honest man. He would have translated accurately even if Mariko were not there. It was Father Alvito who converted Mariko to Christianity and taught Mariko Portuguese and Latin. Father Alvito saved Mariko from suicide and genuinely cares for her. Conversely, Mariko trusts Alvito and thinks very highly of him. The animosity between Anjin & Alvito will create internal conflict for Mariko. Rewatch the scenes between Alvito and Mariko.

At the beginning of the episode, Toranaga is hunting game with his falcon. But he does use carrier pigeons to communicate with his fief. Falconry is an important metaphor for how Toranaga studies and utilizes the people under his command.

The broccoli pizza is an inside joke (an Inside Out joke?) about Cheese Board Pizza Collective in Berkeley. It's not far from Pixar headquarters in Emeryville, CA. The Cheese Board serves one type of vegetarian pizza every day. It changes from day to day, but there's only one type available on any day. A lot of Pixar movies feature landmarks near their HQ. I remember thinking when I saw Inside Out the first time, when the mom asked Riley to be happy for the sake of the dad, that it was not a good thing to do to a kid. A child should not be responsible for the emotional well-being of a parent. It discouraged Riley from expressing her sadness, or even from feeling it. Later, the dad compounded the problem by asking Riley, "Where's my happy girl?" I will say, though, that the parents were not bad people. They made some mistakes, but it's impossible to raise a child without making mistakes. They always wanted to do the right thing. The emotions inside the adults' heads were more in tune with each other, more cooperative, and less reactive than the ones in Riley's head. This is an accurate depiction of how things usually are for kids vs. adults. DEFCON = "Defense Readiness Condition" The U.S. military has a set of alertness levels for outside threats. It goes from DEFCON 5 (a normal state of alertness) to DEFCON 1 (nuclear war). I agree that this is a good movie to help kids understand their emotions. There are even some adults who could learn something from it. One thing that people sometimes miss is that it's important for Riley not just to feel sadness, but to express it. When she breaks down and cries in front of her parents, they can finally see how unhappy she's been. The natural empathy they feel and express for her in that moment helps her heal, and reestablishes and strengthens their bonds.

I'm really enjoying your Shogun reactions! It's an amazing show for sure. One thing you may have missed...two of the five regents are Christian - Kiyama (who they said loves money) and Ohno (the one with leprosy). We saw Kiyama meeting with the Catholic priests discussing what to do about Blackthorne who was revealing their secrets to Toranaga, and Kiyama said "let this be my burden" meaning he would take care of him. So, it was Kiyama who sent the assassin to kill Blackthorne.

The real Blackthorne, (not his real name) has two memorials about him, one in Tokyo and the other I think in Yokohama. In Nagasaki there is a memorial to the 16 martys, one of which was a Apache acolyte Diego Pacheco, who I thought was an ancestor, but he's not.

My feeling is the problem started 10:40 when her mom asked her to continue being "our happy girl" to help the family. Riley repressed her natural sadness at leaving her old home. This created a depression which eventually made her unable to feel any emotions (indicated metaphorically by the control board turning grey. She wasn't able to recover until she experienced the sadness she was repressing

I remember pretending the floor was lava and I had to jump between the furniture. Why does everyone have that same fantasy?

The bath thing is from the water in cities being unsafe as far as I know. Japan has hotsprings and better waste management so it's less of a concern.
