    Thank you so much for watching, we hope you enjoy it and have a great day, love you! 💝

    In a lot of scifi movies, the military are in a rush to bomb everything and the scientists urge caution and understanding.
    It's such an interesting reversal to have the scientist say 'you need to bomb the everliving f*k out of everything, right now' and the military to go '... what??'

      I would say that's the most unrealistic part of the entire show. A scientist wouldn't suggest an impulsive response like that. She just found out that Cordycepts can infect humans, which according to her lifetime of studies is impossible. A scientist's approach is to do more research on this new development and suggesting containment of the city, instead of straight up bombing (they, the writer, should've learned this procedure from 2020 Pandeemic). If they wanted to do a dramatic reaction, a simple answer "I don't know" while she's shaken would suffice...it would show a moment of hesitation from her instead of following protocols. There was a doctor's reaction to this episode who also agreed with the argument I just wrote.

      Scientist were saying way back in the 60s that we lose... So current day ones i could certainly see saying bomb everything..had no progress been made .....which it never is.. money only gets spent on shit that is irrelevant and foreign policy bs... This for me is uber realistic...

      @@martinmillar7137 but that is inaccurate. HIV was a threat back in the 80s, nowadays it's not a death sentence. Leukemia survivability chance now. Look at what people did with covid. Scientist's mindset isn't giving up at the first obstacle, otherwise they wouldn't be a scientist. The way they handled the cold opening was just clumsy. Sure, some things need to not make sense for the narrative, but the least they could do was make it as accurate as possible, starting for the mycologist's response, I mean, they went as far as eliminating spores as a way of transmission to tendrils, which does not make sense for Cordycepts, btw, but they needed to make the scenario as realistic as possible.

    Communication between fungi through the soil did not happen before because there needs to be contact between the fungus/host and the mycelium, and some information must be passed on, which in this case was that the host died.
    It's not just the host dying anywhere.
    As that host died in an area where there were exposed mycelia, there was this communication.
    In real life this happens too, and there are huge colonies of fungi that intertwine beneath the earth, they communicate with electrical impulses.

    The introductory segments are so good. When the episode opened on Jakarta, I was like "No! I want more of Joel and Ellie!" and then five minutes later I was like "NOOO! I want more of Ibu Ratna!" The actor, Christine Hakim, is apparently a major figure in Indonesian cinema. I can see why. Her reaction when she realized there was no stopping the outbreak was fantastic.
    By the way, did you notice that when she cut into the victim's bite wound, there was a thick layer of mycelium under the skin? Ewww. Keep an eye out for that in future episodes.

    10:15 I have no extra knowledge, but I don't believe Sarah was infected.She never came close to any infected, and didn't (potential spoiler about cause of initial outbreak withheld) either.
    For me, what makes this extra tragic, is that I think her shooting was a misunderstanding. Joel told the soldier that Sarah was injured, but he didn't elaborate that she broke her ankle in a car crash. So the soldier reported "she's injured" up the chain, and the higher-ups interpreted it as "she has been bitten," and then ordered the soldier to shoot. The soldier seemed surprised by the order and asked for confirmation, so I don't think it was a standing order to shoot civilians on sight.
    I also believe that Joel has come to the same conclusion in the meantime, and probably blames himself for the misunderstanding, adding to his trauma.

    This is the first time I heard this perspective. But she was not infected. Yes it could be argued since for the people who think outside of the box can easily draw conclusions that she may have been infected. But she showed no signs. Example the kid in her class was infected the hand twitches the reason they showed the dates and times in the first episode is to show you when the virus finally taking over. And clearly she nor her father or uncle showed symptoms. She died because of the hurt ankle and the army wasn’t going to take chances since they did not develop the scanner

    It can be argued either way whether Sarah was infected, and her seeming worried about it was put in that for that exact reason. Fungi are terrifying in that no apparent direct contact still wouldn't mean she wasn't in danger because being near it might be enough if other conditions align.

    • @NerdishReact

    • @Trouble10
      @Trouble10 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      She was not infected. People got infected in two ways: They were bitten by an infected, or they ate something made from contaminated flour. She was never bitten, and you will note that they never ate anything made with flour. She avoided the cookies, the pancakes, the cake he was supposed to buy.

    • @douglas2938
      @douglas2938 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Trouble10 That's also purposefully put in there, but it's not to say "they definitely without a doubt escaped infection this many times" but rather to show how hard it was to stay clear. We don't know all the ways that it happened, we just know what little info Joel could gather, but for the whole world to get infected there would need to be other ways as not all grain supply intersects and not every piece of land is connected even through airways.
      Then there's the fact that the spreading was much easier to explain in the game. The change in how the infection spreads might have made it too convoluted.

    • @Trouble10
      @Trouble10 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@douglas2938 Yes, the other way was being bitten by an infected. The flour mill in Indonesia was the biggest in the world. Even if that only resulted in 10% of the world getting infected, it increases exponentially as those people spread it. This is why they were able to establish quarantine zones, because after the initial infections it was all spread by infected people.

  • @MolnarG007
    @MolnarG007 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    My guess always was right after the hotel "not too deep water" scene when they separate then Tess was bit, NOT later when the clickers came. Could be wrong and don't matter, just it would explain her facial expression as she joins them. And as Joel asks What she won't answer. That would explain how it spreaded when she shows it, not because they travelled long after the clickers but she got bit sooner so it had more time. And of course she was determined to get Ellie through any obstacles, only made it more noticeable as she felt it getting worse so get more tense about it.

    • @meghanmonroe
      @meghanmonroe 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The only reason I would disagree is because we know the area of her bite is a 5-15 minute to full infection. They still had a bit of a walk to get to the final destination. And when she finally reveals the bite, it's just starting to spread out. It had to have happened with the clickers (in my humble, of course lol)

    Sarah was not infected. Both Joel and Sarah both avoided eating infected food throughout the entire day.

    Honestly, this episode is where I am bothered with, specifically the cold opening bit when Ibu Ratna called to bomb the cities...this isn't how any scientist would have responded. I cringed on this part because it felt ridiculous.

    • @MolnarG007
      @MolnarG007 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      tell me then how do you stop it? You cannot. You can slow it down by radical things like bombing, to give other cities, locations more time. If you try to just blockade a swarm will easily break out. You need to lower their number to be able to have any kind of quarantine. And what she also realises (that later was told) it wasn't a car factory. It was a grain factory. That shipped it's product long ago to everywhere. You cannot contain it.
      Of course this answer was a very short one without details, but i had no issue with it, it went for the shock factor. But it was a viable, understandable action.

    • @TARS20
      @TARS20 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MolnarG007 have a look at our pandemic situation...also watch some doctor's reaction for this episode, there's one famous one, I forgot his name who said, that's not how they (medical experts) would react to the situation. There's no guaranteed success of a containment, but one should try anyway...again, remember Wuhan case.
      How would I react as a scientist?
      1. I would be shocked... devastated, but this situation is a new development to my lifetime of study (mycology). How would I approach it? An evolution of a study subject means there are a lot of doors open for further study. I would have to do more research of the subject to determine whether or not a vaccine or a cure is possible. Remember, Cancer, AIDS had no cure...yet scientists are still studying to find it.
      2. Containment. Mobilise the military and form a blockade of ground zero and surrounding areas. No exit, no entry. Determine the radius of contaminants' travel by time of the first contamination. Since Indonesia is an archipelago country, it's easier to stop the spread, but grounding all air and sea travel.
      3. Only resort to bombing once the containment attempt failed within Jakarta.

    • @TARS20
      @TARS20 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MolnarG007as for the shipping, it's rather easy to track. Shipping outside the country takes long as they only ship these grains through a shipping container. Which means you can still contact the ship and halt its delivery. Remember, the event of the infection happened not that long before Ibu Ratna was contacted. Let's say, within 3-4 days, since the infection takes less than 24hrs through digestion.
      The biggest problem would be local shipping, but again, as I said, track down the shipping destinations and ground all travels... it's an archipelago country.
      However, that wouldn't make much of the Story of course, because they really need a worldwide outbreak to progress the story the way it is. Still, the reaction isn't a scientist's reaction (ask any scientist near you), they wouldn't resort to the bombing as first action...at best they'd be shocked and don't know what to do, so a simple "I don't know" as an answer would suffice to display a shocking factor.
