Clarification about the languages detail: in the context of the show, they DO speak portuguese when they mention that they do. The fact that the actors are speaking english it is simply a production decision to make the series more globally accessible
Yep, the show was funded by an American company with a big budget so they sought to make it accessible to the US audience while still bringing Japanese authenticity. Subtitles to this day is a big barrier in the American market.

Not just that but there are not many good actors who can speak Portuguese. Portugal and Brasil actors are all melodramatic telenovela soap actors, they are not serious.
This series is based on a novel and the novel is loosely based on historical events. It was also meant to be a mini series of one 10 episode season but the show was such a success and well received it was renewed for a 2nd season and possibly more after that.

Guys the reason the actors in this show speak English instead of Portuguese is for the same reason you choose to speak English instead of Spanish...clarity. Shogun is intended mainly for the US and Japanese markets so the production uses English and Japanese purely for the sake of the intended audiences. 😉😊
Understandable, we were a bit confused at first when Blackthorn said he was going to speak Portuguese and I believe we got our hopes up because we also speak a little Portuguese haha

The show is adapted from a novel, which itself was based on historical events. The book was actually inspired by an English pilot who was stranded in japan and became a vassal to the daimyo that would emerge as Shogun, so I guess you could say that both the book and this show was inspired by true events
In the book by James Clavell, Blackthorne is a proper polyglot and speaks fluent Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, English, and Latin. As a concession to English-speaking audiences, whenever Europeans are talking, English is the spoken language used. When Blackthorne and his men were in the pit in Ajiro they were speaking Dutch, because all of the crew is Dutch. Blackthorne, as a trained pilot, is an educated man for his time. The comment that Yabushige made to Hiromatsu when Blackthorne wanted to go looking for Rodrigues was spot on. Next to the cargo, a Pilot at this time in history was the most valuable thing on any given sailing ship. And sometimes the Pilot was worth more. Pilots would have their lives spared when taken by Pirates or enemy fleets, and impressed into service on the ship that took them, then ransomed back to their nation of origin at the nearest port with both flags represented. So "He's right to go looking for the Spaniard. The man is a trained pilot." was very accurate sentiment for the time.
I have a BA in Spanish Literature and Language (Encantado, señoritas. El placer es mio.), and I studied abroad in Concepción, Chile, in 1992. The name for the territory which became the country of Chile was given that name in 1535-ish, when it was "discovered" by a Spanish Conquistador named Diego de Almagro ("El Adelantado" y "El Viejo" were his nicknames). De Almagro had traveled to Peru and met the Incas and pushed farther south, seeking the "hombres de 'el chili' "(they still love their ají today), or the people who grew chili peppers, or else because there was a Mapuche greeting call from sentries and outposts that sounded like "Chile". De Almagro recorded the land as having that name and it stuck for Western European cartographers. By the time of the liberador O'Higgins 350 years later it was already the imposed name of the land.
The TV series is a modern adaptation of James Clavell's groundbreaking work, and this production did extensive plot revisions to reflect historical records of the time. The Japanese was updated to the archaic polite forms, and Clavell's passages which were overly-romanticized were toned back down to the reality of the day, which was more than sufficient to make this a stellar series.
There will be one other time in the plot ahead where two characters will carry on a conversation in Japanese for a good length of time, but they will suddenly switch and begin speaking English for the duration, even though the language is still understood to be Japanese. The scene was long enough and dealt with very nuanced politics, and so the show decided for that ONE scene that they would skip the subtitles and give the English audiences a break from reading along, to better ensure that the audiences could follow the historical political nuances being exchanged. As for the rest, just assume that when two or more folks speaking Western European languages gather, even though the language you hear is English, they are speaking in the language which most of the characters would understand best. So for the rest of the show, that's mostly Portuguese. But in Episode One, in the Pit and on the boat at the beginning, the language they were actually speaking was Dutch.
Although you can't say the same thing about the novel, when it comes to the adaptation for this particular production, if the series shows you something, it is certifiably and verifiably authentic, no matter which culture is being discussed or presented. They spent a lot of time and money on accuracy, even to the point of making sure that the actors were all regularly trained by a team of Historical Gestures coaches. We can't know for certain, necessarily, but what PhD's and specialists have been able to piece together for the time, it's displayed in the show.

At the beginning of the episode, Toranaga is hunting game with his falcon. But he does use carrier pigeons to communicate with his fief. Falconry is an important metaphor for how Toranaga studies and utilizes the people under his command.

Yay! Glad you ladies are doing this series. It is highly talked about to win lots of awards this year. This is actually a remake. There is an 80’s Shogun series as well and it was also superb. I believe that the actor who plays Rogrigues does have spanish heritage. His family was originally from Spain, and if I remember correctly they moved to Cuba and later to the U.S., or something like that. Which explains how he is able to speak english with a spanish accent from Spain, as opposed to a cuban one.
The dead Taiko's army is still loyal to the heir. The heir's mother will "guide" him until he turns 16. Thus, the heir's mother is extremely powerful.

The book the series is based on is a fictionalised version of the history of that period. So, some characters have been invented, and the names of other historical personages have been changed to allow for greater freedom in the storytelling, but all the basic elements are accurate regarding the political situation. Also, the production was by the Japanese for this, and they went to great lengths to be historically accurate regarding, clothing, customs, architecture, language (they are speaking a kind of Shakespearean version of Japanese) and so on.
Finally, when they are speaking English, they ARE speaking Portuguese in the story. The only exceptions would be when Blackthorne is speaking to himself or with the Dutch.

Others have commented on language but another aspect is that since Blackthorne is English, it allows the audience to stay in his perspective with everything spoken in Portuguese as English since that is the cultural lens Blackthorne understands everything through. If the language were left all in Portuguese, the audience would lose sight that Blackthorne isn't Portuguese and isn't seeing things through a Portuguese cultural lens or perspective. Neither is Mariko, for that matter.

This is based upon the Japanese historical context. The English and Dutch (Protestants) were effectively at war with the Spanish and Portuguese (Catholics). The Japanese when not at a state of constant civil war were at a de facto state of war with the Chinese and Koreans. The Portuguese got much wealth from establishing trade within the region. The Portuguese like most colonial powers brought missionaries to influence/convert the local population. Also Japan was never conquered in its entire history until the end of World War II.

A wonderful story ... as much about women as about men ... except for the boiling in this episode ;-( In history ... 5 ships and 500 Dutchmen try to get to Japan. Result? One ship, a dozen sailors lost at sea. Bird-net. Yes, maybe this will be dubbed out of English, to Portuguese, when shown in Brazil ;-) 1n 1600, Osaka is one of the greatest cities on Earth, bigger than London or Amsterdam.

This is loosely based on a book, the Shogunate eventually got rid of the Portugese around 1700. This Shougnate lasted 200 yrs, and had a islolationist policy, so when the americans arrived in 1884 or around there, Japan was 200 yrs. behind the west in technology, especially weapons.
