Master Effects Super 300 Demo
What you hear is what I recorded, no post eq or compression. I use light compression and eq in my pedalboard to achieve my dry sound. I'd like to say that its hard to capture with a mic the feeling of "bigness" this preamp adds to my tone. It adds depth. I also observed how influential the 810 cabinet is in affecting the overall tone; you may not experience similar results with a different cabinet.
The first demos alternate between mic's cabinet and di signals, first with a Fender Precision Bass, and then a Jazz Bass. These two settings are what I would use for a beefed up clean. Both basses have tone wide open, strung with Rotosound stainless.
Setting 1
00:45 P-Bass with Drums
01:25 P-Bass solo
02:07 Jazz Bass with Drums
02:46 Jazz Bass solo
Setting 2
03:29 P-Bass with Drums
04:07 P-Bass solo
04:53 Jazz Bass with Drums
05:31 Jazz Bass solo
Later in the video, I go through a few other settings, and apply some distortion with pedals. This portion of the video is mic'd cab only, playing a Jazz bass.

A great tune that I've been jamming for the past few years. Cool song because its got two bass tracks (at least). I panned either bass track left and right. I'm just giving a little demo of both the Boss CS-2 and CS-3 Compressor/Sustainer Pedals. There are a few guitar examples on TH-cam, but no bass ones. Big up
Fuzz sounds great alone as well
do you have the tabs for this i cant find them anywhere and ive been wanting to learn this so bad 😭😭🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
You don’t need tabs. Use your ear, and watch my fingerings in the video. Its a pretty easy song. Remember its two different tracks. I thought the mix i did would help. I learned by using my ear and watching videos of Juan playing it!
I had the CS2 and miss it so much. It just sounds great.
Can you please show the tabs
This is so good! Is there a bass tab for this..?
Sorry i dont have a tab, i learned this by ear years ago. If you need some help, try and do your best to follow along with my finger positions. Thanks! Its mostly in the key of e major i think.
Well there ain't no rules but you do know the Boss is a guitar compressor ? ... famously used by Cliff Burton on his bass... your losing a beautiful bassy Jazz tone...if you played in a band the singer would not be happy as your in the same frequency ranges..great for those 10-15 second bass solos...i would go the full hog & get an Ibanez bass with a more modern tone but were all different...i play mostly Fender Jazz's,Precisions & Jaguar bass's but i bought them for the tone..a bass compressor & a MLD DI pre-amp if not allowed to use my Warwick WA300 Class A head & 15" & 12" Ashdown cabs....you would have luvved the alternative bands in the '90's & '00's bud....they all liked guitar pedals on bass guitars then...
All you have to do is change a capacitor on the input stage of the circuit for better bass response, which I did a couple years ago. Juan Alderete has been using them for years without much of a problem. The CS-2 isn’t a great comp anyway, it just has good character. My main comp is now an empress. If you think I have the same pedalboard more than ten years later, you’re mistaken. Some pedals are still there, some not. If it sounds good, it is good.
@@joerobot32.... The Empress bass compressor is very good quality, versatile & pretty transparent compared to many other compressors... i use a choice of compressors depending on if i can use an amp head & cab or not.. a Bass Preacher if using my amp with cascaded compression using the good quality compressor built into my Warwick WA300.. if using a pedal board with DI pre-amp i will use a Boss LMB3, took me years to get to know how to use it properly... but very good if used with the right gear.
Hi. Whats the brand of strings that you are using? Is the Phase 100 more versatile and is more usefull with a Bass ? Thanks
Rotosounds Swing 45-105. I like the Phase 100 because it has more options, like keeping the low end out of the effected signal.
The bass tone of this band reminds me of fretless. I thought of Mick Karn.
This is fretless, and Juan Alderete has claimed that the group Dali’s Car (Karn on bass) is the first inspiration for Big Sir.
I wish I found this sooner. Dude absolutely honored this song
great job!
Wow still useful pretty much for life 😅
Thank you so much man, been awhile since this was posted but it was super helpful in order to record my own bass cover, hope you're doing great!
Hey man, glad you enjoyed it and found it useful . Thanks!
NICE
I LIKE THE SOUND SO MUCH. COULD YOU TELL ME WHICH AMPLIFIER AND SPEAKER YOU USED?
Sounds great! Thanks for the demo. I've been using a Sansamp VT Bass rackmount for years but it can be finicky to dial in. Almost too much flexibility. And it's lacking some of that 800hz midrange this pedal seems to have in spades.
After comparing the two, the VT Bass is much better at the B-15 vibe, the Super 300, the SVT vibe.
@@joerobot32 thanks! I just ordered a Super 300
I love your bass cover! So underrated :(
Nice exercise
Thanks
Hey Vince, sick tune you got there! Do you know whether those are the pedals that Juan also use for these Regions/Regions-like songs?
Juan probably used a Boss CS-2 Compressor and a Boss VB-2 Vibrato
Smooth tone and awesome grooves brother!! 🙌🏻🎸🎶
The P bass just kills through this.. Thanks mate..
Very well played! Have you checked mine yet? th-cam.com/video/oiUIcUw5tx8/w-d-xo.html
What a great sounding pedal.Really cops the SVT grunt and grind.Would loved this back in my heavy gigging days.Using an Ampeg 8x10 do you get the punch to the chest the original SVTs delivered?
Plenty. The Bass control has plenty of bottom, as I said in the video. 12' oclock on the Bass control is plenty of bottom end for me, but you could dial in more of its not rumbling your chest. The Mids are cutting. I used a VT Bass for Ampeg tones for about 10 years. Now I use this.
@@joerobot32 You should ask for a commission.I ordered one yesterday.👍👍

Amazing!!!
I honestly though juan milly vanillyed during shows
Do you mean he was pretending to be Juan the whole time? lol, I can only assume that was a jab at his live performance, I dunno, not really disliking anything about the 100+ bootlegs I've heard.
I've just purchased the CS-3 & found that the bass sounds more natural & deeper bass with the tone rolled either completely off or just slightly on. The tone thins out the bass when up too high. I do like the pedal & what it does, it definitely evens out the levels of each string & notes. I love your playing & the sound of your fretless is gorgeous. Thanks for your review.
Thanks, just keep in mind that any CS2 you compare to a modern CS3 you should take into account the 35 year old capacitors in the CS2 that are probably not performing as well as they could. The artifacts I was describing in the video are from a new CS3 vs and old CS2. I thought the CS3 was nice on fretless, but sounded like plastic on fretted, just my opinion.
Can this drive a power amp?
I would imagine so. Been using mine through an effects loop on the quilter, dont see why a power amp wouldnt work.
@@joerobot32 How are noise levels? My plan would be to run this first in the chain, cleanish/very edge of breakup, a few db above unity to drive everything behind it. Is there much hiss/hum?
Please perform Mental Medication and Nevermore by UK!
Thank you for making one of the only review videos of this pedal out there!
No problem, the video doesnt do justice to how huge this sounds
@@joerobot32 I recently got one myself so I know - it's an amazing pedal! I love how I can dial in the different mid frequencies depending on which bass and amp I'm playing. There's a different sweet spot for different combinations! Question: What do you think of the Bright switch? I haven't been able to find a use for that yet. It's kinda bassy and boomy. If I soloed above, say, the seventh fret, I could see using it, but under "normal" circumstances to boost my volume or tone a bit, it hasn't worked. I guess it's meant for distinct solo parts.
@@RichardReneeRachel i use the ultra high pretty much all the time. The ultra low havent found much use for.
I’ve spent more time with this pedal and it’s truly magical. I find that I need to tweak the settings depending on what amp I’m using - that’s a good thing - and it’s a very versatile pedal to bring out great tones with a variety of amps. I have learned to love the ultra high switch in the on position, tweaking the treble knob to dial in cool, punchy sounds that cut through. I still don’t find much use, if any, for the boost switch. (Not the ultra switches, the lower right boost switch.) Do you use the boost switch?
@@RichardReneeRachel ah, that switch. Forgot about that. I guess that answers your question!
suupeeerr,bravo.....
Solid!
I prefer my 80's Japan Cs-3 over my old Cs-2 on bass... Either way, you cant go wrong with a Boss compressor.
Thank you! Very helpful
How do you get that amazing tone, share the secret
Lol i plugged my bass direct into the soundcard on my macbook.
Yeah! Took some time but I did it. Best way to play like someone you admire is to learn some of their licks. Can you tell me what kind of bass that is? Some sort of short-scale Fender?
Its a standard scale fender jazz that i put darkstars in.
Yeah, now that you said it, I see. Not sure why I thought it was a smaller bass. Eyes play tricks sometimes :-)
Cool stuff guys
Note for note perfect!
do you recommend this bass?
Great sound!
I prefer a bass when it slides..
I bought one as part of a package deal for three old DOD pedals and love it as a booster in front of fuzz or OD pedals, works a lot like a mids booster
Beautiful
Bass player’s perspective reaaaaaally helped out! Thanks for that. Just purchased a CS-2 tonight and looking forward to trying it out in my board.
