The Golden Ratio may help explain why Mozart’s music has withstood the test of time. Also known as the Golden Section, it is a mathematical formula that is somehow resonates with humans. It commonly features in visual works of art as well as in music, and some believe that it even occurs in nature, like sea shells or the leaves on a plant stem. Much of Mozart’s work conforms to the Golden Ratio, including Sonata No. 1 in C major. This piece precisely follows the Golden Ratio: 38 measures in the first part and 62 in the second, for a total of 100. Though Mozart was known to have a fascination with mathematics, we may never know whether Mozart intentionally used the Golden Ratio or if its presence in his music is yet another example of his genius.
