One third of Mozart’s symphonies were composed within a single two-year period, ending in 1774 when Mozart was just 18. By then, Mozart had turned his childhood fame into a lucrative job as a court musician for the ruler of Mozart’s native Salzburg. Symphony No. 29 is often considered among the best of Mozart’s “early symphonies,” and the beginning of his mature era as a composer. Many years later, Mozart performed the symphony in Vienna, showing us that even Mozart himself knew this was a masterpiece. If you didn’t know, would you be able to tell that an 18-year-old composed this immaculate symphony?
