While Mozart was known throughout his life as a composer of joyful, humorous music, his 40th symphony is dark and deeply emotional. Mozart penned this symphony in 1788, a year which also saw a decline in his financial success and the death of his infant daughter, Theresia. Beyond his personal issues, Mozart was also influenced by a contemporary art movement known as Sturm und Drang. A precursor to the Romantic era, Sturm und Drang (German for “Storm and Stress”) encouraged artists to express intense emotions through their work. This piece, one of Mozart’s final compositions, is considered to be one of his greatest works. Can you hear Mozart’s deep emotions conveyed in Symphony No. 40?
