Mozart was known to have a fondness for animals, and particularly cared for a pet starling he bought in Vienna in 1784. The bird served as Mozart’s companion and muse for three years before dying in 1787. Mozart wrote a heartfelt poem and arranged a mournful funeral for his beloved pet. Mozart’s sorrow at this time was likely also influenced by his father Leopold’s death just a week prior.
