    00:50 Piano Sonata no. 11, K. 331 - III. Alla Turca
Like many Europeans of his era, Mozart was fascinated by the culture of Turkey. Turkish music was viewed as “exotic” and served as a source of inspiration for Mozart. In one lesser-known opera, "Il Seraglio," Mozart used bright, shrill woodwinds and varied percussion to imitate the sound of Turkish Janissary bands. This piece, "Alla turca," is often known as the “Turkish March” and is one of Mozart’s most famous works. It attempts to imitate these same musical characteristics using only the piano. This piece was meant to sound exotic to Mozart’s European audience. Does it sound exotic to you?
