Mozart’s 41st and final symphony is also perhaps his greatest. Completed three years before his death, this piece quickly became known as the Jupiter Symphony. The work spans 33 minutes and pushes the technical and musical limits of what a symphony could be in Mozart’s time. Nobody is quite sure who was the first to call this the “Jupiter” symphony, but it’s plain to see why the name is appropriate for such a monumental work. The Jupiter Symphony is considered joyous and happy compared to Mozart’s previous dark and contemplative Symphony No. 40. Do you think Mozart’s talent shines more in happy music or in sad music?
