Mozart completed his Clarinet Concerto in 1791, less than two months before his death. It is often referred to as the composer’s last great work. Though considered among the finest clarinet concertos ever written, this piece was originally composed for an instrument called the basset clarinet: a slightly larger relative to the modern clarinet. Mozart was inspired by Anton Stadler, who was the greatest clarinetist in Vienna. Mozart wrote that Stadler had “so soft and lovely a tone that nobody with a heart could resist it.” Like much of Mozart’s music, the Clarinet Concerto has been in several films, including “The King’s Speech” and “27 Dresses.” Have you heard this melody in a movie before?
