What does it mean to be a child prodigy? Mozart composed his first works at a very young age, but that isn’t the only reason why he was considered a musical genius. A popular story describes a 14-year-old Mozart hearing a piece called “Miserere” at the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Upon hearing the piece just once or twice, Mozart was allegedly able to transcribe the entire work from memory. Though copying the piece had been forbidden, Mozart’s musical aptitude won the favor of the Pope. Historians now believe this story was heavily embellished, but the piece is nonetheless one of the most widely-performed a cappella choral works today. Listen to this recording in its entirety, then sit down with a pencil and paper. How much of the piece do you think you could write down just from memory?
