My name is Dave Sincox a long time resident of New Jersey. The ocean has always been a part of my life, my dad being a avid fisherman I was always on a boat in his free time. On my 10th birthday I got my first surfboard and since then I have never looked back on surfing. It’s always been a activity that has always gotten most of my attention. But on my 31st year of surfing I am after some new sensations in the water and the idea of surf foiling came to mind. For me personally it reminds me of things that I used to do when I was younger. I miss the feeling of carving on a snowboard, also skating transition and I just want to start from scratch in a new activity. So I am throwing all my experience in surfing out the window and inviting you to The Lift Journal which is a session by session record of my progression in foiling from a beginners perspective. Sharing the highs and lows of my experience first hand.

A Dummies Guide to Tail Shimming...
มุมมอง 1.1Kวันที่ผ่านมา
Whats's up everyone, I get a lot of people asking about gear set ups and tuning so decided to make a quick dummies guide to tail shimming. In this video I will be using a -.5/0/ .5 tail shim to show the differences that they make in the same session. Since there is so much good content out there explaining what tail shims do I decided to say how they change the feel of a foil. Also this one is ...

What's up everyone and thanks for checking out my first RIDE REPORT by The Lift Journal. The Omen Flux is the most interesting looking board I have personally seen in the foil board world. The Omen Flux is honestly a shape that I would not normally be attracted to. But when I realized I need to go a little further up in volume because of my extra 10-15 pounds of wetsuits I knew that it was goin...

What’s up everyone. Welcome to another Lift Journal entry, thank you for tuning in. Sorry it’s been a while. The weather has not been great, and a lot of swell but the wind has been funky. What's up everyone, I am beyond excited to share with you my first couple days on the Progression 125 Wing by @Unifoil . After day 4 of riding this wing exclusively I am confident to say that for what I want to do in prone foiling it's clicking all the boxes. I was unsure of how it would work in smaller swell but I actually like it more than the 140. I do have to mess around with the tuning in ...
Manera Foil Bag Review

What's up everyone, I did a little review about this Manera Foil bag that I just recently got. Infos & Characteristics The Surf foil bag comes with a different entry system; It is designed to be able to protect the board while the mast is attached. It features a high protective foam and we used Velcro's instead of zipper so the board doesn’t get damaged. Very handy when you have to assemble you...

Thanks man! I haven't tried swimming but now understand the effects of positive or negative and why to choose one or another.
What is the difference in angle of front and back foil without shim? (or 0° shim) I'm expecting that the "+" shim increases the angle, and the "-" shim decreases the angle. Not that the "-" indicates a negative angle between front and back foil...
Omen is pretty neutral at 0 but every brand has their own stock preference whether it be more front foot or back foot. Also keep in mind some prone boards have angle built into the board. With that you can either keep it as is or base plate shim. I will be doing a baseplate shim video as well.
it's all compromise, i tried without top plate shim on my crappy setup and it was unrideable and i rided like that few month board dropping instantly if i dont lean back, now i found the right setup and it's so much more confortable to have front foot, im full forward on my setup there is not other choice. i used a fone wing rocket-s to surf foil recently had to move it a little bit forward to improve take off as i was missing a lot of wave, take off was good but front foot was too huge ! it's not easy to find the right setup ! btw now let try a top plate shim tutorial haha 😅
@@youdigsurf it’s also to let people know that if they have a hard time getting on foil to shim positive and if they are getting over foiled then shim negative. Also and I am not sure I explained it what I mean is if you are at 2.5 positive when I say shim negative I don’t mean to go to a negative shim. I mean lower the angle to a positive 1. Changing the angle too much will not be a Fun experience
Love this Dave! Great insight from a surf perspective
Thank you. I appreciate that
awesome, well-constructed commentary
@@Foiljourney thanks so much
Any reason for not using a leash?
@@karimodriscoll3209 that’s a fair question. If there is no one out and I am sticking in an inhabited area I usually won’t wear a leash because I have gotten hit more times without one.
Great content, lots of insights. Keep 'em coming 🙌
@@PhilipKlawitter appreciate that.
I think you tried to make a short but it’s was too long 07 sec too long 😅 happy to see yoy come back !
You are correct haha.
Good review, I like the garage chat/water footage! 🤙🏼🤙🏼
The first half of the video makes a lot of sense to me and is very helpful. I got lost at about 4:08. How does the narrowness of the planing area influence responsiveness and front foot/back foot pressure? Once you’re on foil, other than touching down or clearance in turns, it seems like bottom contour is irrelevant. Thanks in advance for explaining this in more detail!
Ya. So I am talking about the narrow outline. Not the narrow bottom or planning area.
But with that said I do think that narrower touchdown points do have a little different feeling in pump. Technically although the volume might be the same the volume is more under your feet and not to the sides of the board.
Amazing ride and progression! Where are you located in NJ?
I am in the Asbury Park area
Oh nice, I am in NY and surf NY/NJ area. Started foiling 3 years ago but my progression is nowhere near yours. On a Axis gear, would love to try the Uni 140 as they do an Uni/Axis adapter
It looks a bit like the latest Omen. They are both thin. This one has a little more sweep back at the ends and also the anhedral weakens closer in from the tips in this one. I have my own design finishing up on the 3D printer and it's slightly closer to this one except I have more anhedral curve in the middle and thinner tips at a different angle. All planforms that should shred. I was surprised how much forward of the mast this is though, it makes it more turn resistant.
Chimes make gentle noises in the wind, chines are angles on hulls of boats and boards
Love the video! What advice do you have for an eFoiler looking to branch into the prone foil discipline? Would you recommend starting behind the boat first? I currently ride a 4’2 lift pro.
Hey sorry for the holdup. So if you feel really comfortable on the e foil to the point that you want to start getting into swell I would just do that. Are you using the boat to tow into little waves or do you mean using the boat to learn a smaller board? If you’re just looking to get used to a smaller board without assist I think you can just jump in the ocean. My personal issue with tow as far as learning is that all the power is now in front of you so your pressure is kinda weird.
@@theliftjournal Thanks for replying! I mean using a jetski/boat to learn how to ride a traditional hydrofoil first. My ultimate goal is to branch into prone foiling at the beach on a regular hydrofoil. I feel like the biggest challenge will be the fact that you aren’t directly controlling the power output with a controller, but must adjust your riding to the power put out by a vehicle/waves
@@schulzaboy77 so time on foil is important and a boat can help 100 percent. But if you want to learn to prone foil the hardest part is the pop up and you’re not going to learn that on a boat. So again if you feel comfortable on foil in general I would just jump in the water on a small day and just get those motor functions down. I grew up surfing and also had wakeboarding as well. But if I didn’t know how to wakeboard I don’t think I would have been able to figure out foiling behind a boat. Again all the power is now in front of you so you’re holding onto the power in stead of having the power behind you. Hence e foil and or swell powered. Please keep in mind. These are just opinions and I have a very strong surf background. So prone foiling was actually easier to me than getting towed.
Awesome review. What's your weight? I'm shopping for a hybrid prone/wing board in the 45L-50L range for 83kg/185 lbs or so. I normally wing an Appletree Jazz 60L and my prone board is an Appletree Pro Foil V2, but I'm struggling a bit a 37L with with. I want a bit more foam. I wish the rear strap inserts weren't offset like this. I like the idea, but I ride switch a lot, so having a straight strap at the back is kinda important to me. @omenfoils
Hey Danny, Sorry for the delayed response. I am in the 140 range in a suit. I have no winging background but prone is more of my thing. With that said the flux is a mix of both. I personally love it as a prone board and have been told it lifts out of the water on wing super easy. They are nice because they are on the narrower side so more sensitive when attacking on turns.
I love the editing that went into this! Very well executed!
Appreciate that.
Go Dave!💥🤙

Dark shirt and shorts hide the wing shapes and contours. Just suggesting 7:39 7:41
Very cool foil system. Definitely interested in trying one of these
It's really good. If your in New Jersey I might have a demo soon
Love the 850. Easy to ride, rips turns and fast! Great review!
Thanks! 👍

Thank you. I unfortunately had to export it like that because my mic volume was all weird.

Awesome review!!
Really enjoying going through your videos from the start. What Unifoil setup (mast, wing, fuse, tail) would you recommend getting into prone? I am a midlength surfer, love winging in waves so have foil experience, and weigh 145lbs. Live in Wilmington NC. Thanks!
Hey Andrew, So I think depending on your weight and overall skill level will let you know where to be. But as far as getting into prone either the 140 or 170 is fantastic. Very forgiving in pump and fast enough to connect waves. For me at 135-140 I really liked the 140 as my goto at the time I was riding unifoil. It’s faster than the 170. But the 170 does have a very forgiving low end that can’t be beat. I have since moved on to another foil brand called Omen and they are a completely different feel than Uni. But I will say that if you want to concentrate on prone and flying without the power of the wing the Progression 140 is amazing. Hope this helps and feel free to reach back out for any info. I have since progressed from this video date and have a 140 “review” video in the series.
yah.. just started to learn to wing in Thailand. humbling for sure... been surfing for 30 years.. .suping for 7.... humbled... but excited to keep going!
Hi great comparison. If possible could you confirm the distance from the tail to the kick pad?
In other words workout get in shape right ride a narrow board 🤙🏽🍍🤓
I think it’s a mix of fitness, personal preference, but also what your local waves are like. For me personally I love the width of a wide board when getting up. But like the narrowness when it’s up on foil. But since this video I have also started to dabble in a touch of an offset stance. Which I don’t know if it would work with a more narrow tail. Anyway. Hope you enjoyed the video and thank you for the support.
Hi came across your channel and I’m beginning my foil journey. What is the technique to pop up on such a small board…I’m 6 3 will that be a problem?
When popping up do you put your rear foot on the back of the board chicken wing style?
So i think i go front foot first then back foot. But I think i need to start going back foot then front foot.
Could you do a short vid from a side view showing your pop up?
I’m 6 3 and not sure how easy to pop up on theses short boards
Love it Dave! Stoked you're digging Flux and really enjoyed following your tuning progression!
More to come !
Hi, please check my comment above. Thanks.
I'm the opposite. I can wing all day but I can't prone foil to save my life. The popup is impossible for me. Wing progression should be fast once you get up and build the muscles needed.
interesting review !
Great break out comparing the 2 different shapes!
Smooth looking turns Dave!
Thanks Greg
The sweatshirt tease!!!
Excellent analysis!! Makes total sense. I found similar challenges when I went to my more narrow board - but lots of the benefits you highlighted.
It’s all about when and where to use all these different options.
i feel like u would notice a way bigger difference if you tried 7 other foil setups, but i understand there is a conflict of interest.
I could see there being some difference between 7 different foil setups. But this is designed to help with early stages of foiling. Although these two boards are on the lower liter scale of prone boards they are very different. Hopefully someone can see similar issues that I have and be guided on how to either fix or avoid them.
Very interesting and very well presented👍👍. Thanks!
Thank you.
I'm wandering if you have thought about getting a foil drive just to increase your wave count. It would almost be like having a toe in every day. the new Gen 2 looks kinda neat. Your thoughts?
I think the foil drive is a really cool way of getting on foil more. The issue is that they are a little out of my price range. But I do believe they are worth every penny
Boy, you have come a long way. I think you are doing really good now.
Riding is great. Love the way you pieced together this edit.
Much appreciated!
listen to your mind also buddy..sometimes its easier and talks earlier than the body.
Thanks, I am learning prone foiling and have zero surf background. The video helps put names to some of the things I am trying. Great mix of clips and dialogue! Helmets are great for sun protection, holding a camera, and warmth in the winter. I need to start wearing mine as a habit again.
amazing! youve progressed so much in such a short time!
Thank you so much!!
Nice flow!
Thank you. We had a fun summer over here
Only one year, oh that's good news! I'm 65 and going to foil classes this week, the game changer for the answer to crowds. Subbed
Definitely interested in the new shapes coming out, the mid length especially. Not sure the length on your disco potato either. I can catch a lot with my 4’3. But if I can open up on a wave a little earlier with less effort, I am all about saving energy for when I am up. Also, due to a multitude of factors I just don’t prone or get on waves everyday. So pump fatigue became real. I do regularly swim and gym as both are minutes away, unlike the ocean. It helps, but it’s not the same. I was able to get on foil atleast 5 days a week when I found a dock suitable for starts. Upped my pump game and endurance. Helped me understand the sweet spot on that foil as well. Beat the gym even though it’s not waves or swell. Also totally feel the vibe on starting with the pop up, it can throw the whole wave off or send you off into exhaustion if your just trying to get out of the break from a poor pop. Anyways I love the content, the progression, the takes on new gear and the footage. I know it’s not easy putting it together. Seems like a passion project. But for some of us, we are the only proners or even foilers in the area. So watching content or listening to casts is the only outlet. So thank you.
Interested to hear more about the two Portals. What they each do well and what you like about each. I’m suffering from analysis paralysis. Ha
Focusing on the connecting waves is where I fall short every time I get up I just want to shred all the wave to the beach 😅
Surfline isn't very accurate for us in the sw uk , I think its because we have a long sea shelf . Windy is better, I think because they combine all weather models, learn to use the free version it's very accurate
wing progression on inner lake if you cant go to the ocean ;) that what we want . waiting to see your shape finished.
The 125 is "the one", but so is the 140, and the 170, and the 200 😋
