Overcommitting In Turns ( Sometimes the scary ones are the safer ones)

  • What's up everyone! Thank you for tuning into another Lift Journal Entry. In this one a have a level up moment on a maneuver that scares the shit out of me. I also speak about how overcommitting on a maneuver can sometimes be safer than undercommitting. The importance of being safe when learning a new discipline and closing the entry with a question about prone board width. Is narrower better?

    Thanks, I am learning prone foiling and have zero surf background. The video helps put names to some of the things I am trying. Great mix of clips and dialogue! Helmets are great for sun protection, holding a camera, and warmth in the winter. I need to start wearing mine as a habit again.

      @@theliftjournal I'm having a blast! I am just so amped to progress because, similar to you, I have been surfing for decades and I want to get to a certain level of foiling skill. It just takes time. Seeing your progression motivates me to get more water time, which is a good thing. Don't worry, I am having a good time!

      Thank you. I still have a lot of kinks to work out but its starting to feel more and more like surf/snow/skate boarding every session.

    Seems like the pros riding thinner boards are doing so to avoid catching rear rail on their carves. I am on a 20 and don’t have that problem, but I am not doing those type of turns.
    Get into winging, dock start, get a dw board, you can also use it to wing in almost no wind because of their designs.
    I am out about once or twice a week, pick a day and whatever the conditions are that day I will pick the discipline of foil. But thankful that you can do pretty much anything on a foil in any conditions. Used to just kite and surf for a long time, but that can be very limiting pending where you live.
    Love the content.

      Hey Gregory,
      Although I am new to foil I spent years surfing and feel like I rode most designs out there. Some worked great and some where really bad when you look back at them. I am really interested in seeing what is next in foil board design. I ended up getting a 4’2 by 17.75 Amundson Firebolt which is 32 liters. As I progress since I am a smaller framed person I find my equipment getting smaller. Although I have not surfed anything under 20.5 in over a decade I was surprised I was able to pop up on the narrower foil board. For me the narrower outline feels more comfortable and connected. Took me a wave or two but after one session I was pretty convinced it’s what I should be using. I have a wing board and just waiting for my wing. Amundson is doing a sale on a 62 liter surf/wing board and jumped on it. I am super interested in the down wind design as well since I also used to prone paddle board a few years ago. The down wind board efficiency is most likely like no other. The length does kinda weird me out. But again. Never tried one. Well anyway thanks for the support and hope your getting on foil.

      Time on foil with the same foil will help you alot give it 6 months you'll be doing so much better

    Used some boat time to get more confident in turns. Highly recommend time behind boat when surf is flat for learning more about foil going "rail to rail".

      100%. My rail to rail is still a little stiff. I am going to try to seek out a new friend with a boat for sure.

    Amundson boards are good paddlers but take time getting used to. this is due to lower roll stability. I want one of those, good paddlers

    I'm wandering if you have thought about getting a foil drive just to increase your wave count.
    It would almost be like having a toe in every day. the new Gen 2 looks kinda neat.
    Your thoughts?

    • @theliftjournal
      @theliftjournal  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think the foil drive is a really cool way of getting on foil more. The issue is that they are a little out of my price range. But I do believe they are worth every penny

    Concerning protection i feel better with them. Tho i got two accident while foiling most of the time stupid accident , failed duckdive hit the bottom and got the tip of the front wing hitting my shin full force rotation of a heavy foil , dent in my bone withouth piercing the wetsuit , jumped while wing foiling and landed my foot on a sharp oyster. Now im looking like robocop with all my protective gear (shin protector, thick boot, impact vest and semi rigid helmet) but i feel better . Im not scared of trying manoeuver jump and so on.
    Concerning the board a dw board is usefull for winging, but a performance shape in prone foiling i dont get it , thinned widht shape are more to stick on steep drop in surf so maybe it’s for hollow wave paddling ? It’s weird . For me it’s usefull only of the board is longer like a gun or a dw board.

      I ended up actually getting a narrower board and I like it a lot more. I feel they are easier to pump but also for some reason takes off a little bit faster. Nothing wrong with protective gear even if you look like robocop. Great movie reference btw

      Some foil guys I was surfing next to use a plumber's 'bump cap' basically it's a plastic shell you put under a surf hat. Lots of options, maybe a version will cover the back of the neck also. Save the face and eyes and skull sounds like the way to go

    what is are the maneuvers where its most dangerous to hit your foil? is it when u hit the whitewater or what else?

    • @theliftjournal
      @theliftjournal  ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest in my time learning I have come close to the foil a few times. In general popping up if your feet are off by a lot the foil can come up. I found out how to jump away pretty well, you eventually kinda know how the foil may react and avoid it as much as possible. This all sounds scary but every new sport has its fear factor.
