Changing Pressure ( swapping fuses and using different tails)

  • When I ordered the Progression 140 I also ordered the Unifoil short fuse with the intent to use it on the Hyper 2 210 to loosen it up in small surf. So in my regular fashion after getting used to the 140 with the medium fuse I decided to switch it out. I am so happy I did because I am really digging what its allowing me to do. The 140 already feels like a skateboard in a mellow bowl but with the small fuse I just loosened up the trucks. With that I have also been using the back foot (shank) tail by Uni Foil too which has helped me in smaller surf. Last thing I kinda touch on is the idea of me learning to wing. I want to know what your experience is with it. Has it helped your prone game or hurt it.

Boy, you have come a long way. I think you are doing really good now.

I definitely think that they complement each other. You're going to get addicted to the speed of a wing and freedom to basically go upwind and foil back. Good luck 👍

Going upwind and foil back is going to be really fun here. I was saying to another person it doesn’t break really far off the coast here. So prone rides are on the shorter side. At least where I am in New Jersey

@The Lift Journal kinda funny I guess my journey was opposite of yours I started with the wing and picked up prone when the wind dropped below 15. You have made some amazing progress on prone. Your switch to the unifoil made me rethink my prone gear so I switched from axis to takuma. Love the videos great info.

Absolutely, in Winds more than 15 kts. i use my proneboard for winging. You will gain a lot of confidence feeling your foil. At the beginning you will need to use a bigger board, but with your skills already established, it will be a short journey using your prone board in higher winds. And dockstarting is a blast for gaining endurance and feel for cadence to be used in different situations with different tail setups.
    It will help you progress!
Btw. awsome journey and well presented, thx for that! 🤙🏽

Absolutely get a wing! Yes you’ll be on a bigger board, but you’re also still on a foil. I’m learning to prone and found winging to be super helpful. I’m going out after two weeks and I’m already pumping and sending it downwind. Two hours winging is two hours foiling 🤙 yew

Great videos, enjoy watching your journey.
    Definitely get some wings.
Wingfoiling is also a great way to dial in/fine tune different gear setups in your bay before going into the ocean since you can spend so much time on foil.
When I go out winging for an hour I'm foiling that entire hour. Unless I want to come in and change something.

Great points you make right there. I feel like it will help comfort speed ranges and how to handle them too. Example when I connect a bigger set and start rolling up the windows trying to stay stable the wing will help my comfort level in speed.

Winging is pretty cool , you can even glide on small chop even on a lake so i guess it's possible on a lake too, you can work your freeflight and pumping. I will start soon dockstarting and hope it's will unlock my connecting skill on a prone , your is already pretty good.

That place and those conditions look amazing compared to here 😅 I love prone foiling, I'm good at sup surfing, i tried sup foiling and wing foiling but I didn't like having more kit , I'm really liking the small board vibes and having both hands free. But no doubt loads of wing foilers love it and they get very good, it's probably easier to learn pumping with a wing or tow , it's tough shit learning to rough it in on a prone foil 😅 . I enjoy watching you surf foil 👽 stay psyched 🤙

So funny you say the conditions are good haha. I always look at the footage after and say to myself, shit its kinda glassy haha. I suppose its the angle and or maybe I am still figuring out foiling. The biggest issue if any with my area is that its really shallow and usually no deep spots further in. So as I get closer to the beach I know I am walking on thin glass haha. I totally hear ya on the wing foil. I am a little nervous that my brain is already having a hard time comprehending front rear and side to side foil pressure. So adding something I have to hold onto and change pressure with uncontrollable elements is for sure scary. But I learned to drive stick so it can't be to far off! Kidding Anyway thanks for the feedback and support. Enjoy!

Definately get a wing setup then there are no bad days. I first learnt to kite foil and prone at about the same time but dropped the kite once I started to wing as the wave riding is so much better on the wing as you can totally depowetr the wing unlike the kite which you can't.
As for which is better the days condition will answer that .Those on shore days which are a pain to prone become wing bliss and after the intial learning curve to wing on big cumbersome gear once you get to the smaller boards it's amazing.
I now wing a 60 litre board 4' 8' for light winds and my small prone board for anything above 18knots and I'm 70-kg.
Laso the wave count on the wing is through the roof it's non stop once you've got skills.Flat water days also become fun for learning all the different gybes and tacks ebn a lake inland can be a blast.
The only downside is more kit and cost so just buy a good couple of wings and any old big secondhand board to get learning as you will be down sizing very quickly Eg. I had one session on 100L then went 85L for a week then 75L for a year .Now prone board and 60L combo for all winds.
    Hope this helps

Appreciate all of this. Thank you for the insight. I was over the moon when I started to figure out prone foil and I think winging will be so fun.

Your foiling journey is looking very familiar! Surf-> prone foil -> wing foil / dock start -> DW. I picked up the wing at around the same prone level as you. Problem is I liked winging so much that I make less of an effort to prone (45 minute drive to beach vs 10 wing spots inside that distance). You can get so much swell riding done out in the bays and rivers (and ocean) that the time spent waiting on waves prone can feel like a relaxing vacation.
Consider getting a smaller DW board as a beginner wing board. Especially if you can’t find a loner giant board. I’m similar size and started on a big 104L plank. Now today I just rode a 27L prone for first time, but also had a blast on my 86L Armie DW board same session. 60L is my daily driver to my 65kgs.

Meant to reply to this and just seeing it again now. Anyway I just got my Wing and a board and hoping to use it tomorrow. I am sure like most of the east coast we have just had waves after waves haha. I am really interested in getting a down wind board but I have to figure out the bumps first. your Insta is awesome.

I was a windsurfer and took up winging because everyone I knew was doing it. Pretty much haven't windsurfed since and I have 40 years of it in my background. Then I discovered prone foiling about 6 months ago and since then I have have hardly been wingfoiling. I enjoy winging when I go out but I don''t crave it now like I do prone foiling. If we had waves everyday I probably wouldnt wing.
I find winging also means having a slightly different foil set up. I use smaller foils. Armstrong MA800 for winging vs 1225 and 1000 for prone plus I use a shorter mast for prone. Then there is the bigger board. 60 litre wing board vs 35 litre prone. Then there is the three wings for various conditions. I have a 3.0 a 4.0 and a 5.0. Sometimes I begrudge the extra expense of gear laying about on the off chance that I go for a wing.
Winging was hard to learn but I progressed way faster than at any point on my windsurf journey. A bigger board and foil is definitely a must (I think) for learning.
Then there is dock foiling. Started this a bit after winging and really enjoyed it although the learning process was brutal for me. Smashed my board on the dock numerous times. Hundreds of failed attempts and its still hit and miss but so good when you get it going. I would recommend a bigger foil again. 2000cm2 plus is a good bet. Your take off is a slower speed than catching a wave so when you are beginning it can be hard to get lift.
Having said all of the above I am a bit of a slow learner so probably made a lot of stuff harder than it needed to be. TH-cam has been huge for the learning process hence why I haunt foil channels looking for tips.
In conclusion, all foiling is awesome I just happened to have decided prone is my go to! Sorry about the wall of text.

Don’t apologize for information. Prone foiling was a big investment and adding a Wing and a larger “wing” board into the mix is a expense that I hope I am happy I make. I appreciate your background and take on it all and keep on foiling Troy
