  • Welcome to The Lift Journal. A session by session record of my progression in foiling from a beginners perspective. Sharing the highs and lows of my experience first hand.
Besides learning to comfortable fly the foil managing a turn is one of the hardest things I have found. In this entry I look back on some footage from the last month where I was really concentrating on " carving" the foil to make the most of my rides. Unlike most other board sports a hydrofoil uses 4 different axis points for balance. So when I go to do a heel side turn depending on where on the wave or swell I have to be cautious of the depth of the foil and also body weight as well. But then there is the trick of making it look good and or at least trying to make it look on purpose. Maneuvering the foil also helps with connecting pumps and staying in the sweet spot of the wave. If your too much in the whitewater you lose a lot of speed and gain turbulence. Too far in front of the wave you lose wave or swell energy which forces you to either carve back (if you can) or pump to the next destination. Since prone foiling is my only discipline at the moment I am starting to really work on using the foil to make the most out of my ride. With that said I recently connected the most amount of waves and I think it all has to do with my work with turning.

I think you are looking really sharp. I'm about 5 months into prone foiling and your videos have provided me with motivation to stick with it.
Starting to figure out the Armstrong MA1225 but I'm also thinking I might grab the new MA1475 to see how much easier this should make it for pumping which is sort of the part that I enjoy the most at the moment. I did consider a whole Unifoil prone setup after watching your progression but I am sort of invested in Armstrong at the moment for winging so I will sit on the fence a bit longer.

First off thank you so much for the kind words. This project was never meant to motivate anyone but I am so stoked it helps you out. I really liked the 1225 wing by Armstrong. I switched because I am a crazy person when it comes to whatever hobby I am most invested in, so I had to try another brand. I think Armstrong does an amazing job on their wing program too and if your invested in winging maybe try Uni to see if it’s right for you. As far as these new bigger MAs they look great and if you want even more efficient pumping the bigger ones certainly will not hurt.

@@theliftjournal I'm right at 1 year with about 50 sessions. In case you're wondering, you are doing great for 8 months! You're a couple levels ahead of me. I will use your videos as motivation to progress and at the same time I'll use my age (55) as an excuse. LOL Keep it up!

Really enjoy hearing about your progression as I am on a similar journey. I was wondering why you went with the Progression 140 over the Progression 170? It seems like a pretty big jump in square centimeters from Hyper2 210 to Prog 140. I am not saying you aren't ready for it - just wondering about your thought process.
    Hyper2 210 (1355sq. cm), Progression 170 (1097 sq. cm), Progression 140 (903 sq. cm).

So good question. I am around 140 pounds or so and wanted the 140 for medium sized waves that I could shred around a bit more. There is a good chance I will get the 170 as well. But I wanted to try the smallest model first. Ideally on waves with more power I would use the 140 and use 210 for knee high and small shore runner excursion.

Makes sense to me. Should be clear which foil to use on each day whereas if you got the 170 you’d just use that all the time. Ive been riding the 170 for a week and it pumps better than the original unifoil hyper 190 or 210…. Which is another way of saying you’re going to be shocked how well the 140 pumps for its size I think. It’s only 2 inches narrower span than the 170

@@mattllewhellin5996 I have an odd feeling that I will get the 140 and then get the 170 and the 210 might get sold. But I have to see how everything works for my conditions.

Did you try the short fuse to unlock the 210? Or G10 13''?

Anyway the 140 Prog will fill the gap...

I do have a short fuse coming with the 140 which I would like to use on the 210 when it’s small. I also ordered a KD 13 marlin to try as well.
