Bessey K Body VS Pony Pipe Clamp Review
For the longest time I used Pony Jorgenson 3/4" Pipe Clamps exclusively. I had had bad experiences with parallel clamps. I could not get the head to move in and out with any consistency - they drove me crazy! Plus, I felt they were addressing problems that did not exist - namely even clamping pressure and parallel clamping for flat panel glue-up. I had always been able to get even clamping pressure and maintain flat panels with the pipe clamps.
BUT - a few years back Bessey sent me 4 free K Body clamps. I started playing with them and soon found I loved them! It wasn't that they could do stuff the pipe clamps could not - but they could do many of the same things with much greater ease. They were time savers!
In business, time equals money. If I were still making a full time living in the shop (semi-retired now) - I would seriously consider filling my racks with K Body clamps. But they are very expensive, so I only buy a few at a time. (When I finish a paying job I might reward myself with a few of them)
This is not to say the Pony Pipe clamps do not have their place. If I had not been sent the freebie K bodies, I would have been happy to continue with them. If used correctly they can do everything the K Body clamps can do - just a bit slower.
If you are on a limited budget I would suggest starting with pipe clamps. They are much cheaper. Their expense can be further eased by buying fewer fixtures and more pipes of various lengths . The fixtures can then be changed out as needed.
If you do not have budget restraints, I would go with the K Body clamps.

Obsidian Ebony Review - A substitute for true ebony

I use a lot of ebony in my Greene and Greene furniture. Many years ago I acquired a lifetime stash. But - if you are in need of ebony today - its very expensive and often hard to find. Great review video Darrell. For some reason, my Bessey K Body clamps handle needs to unscrew enough to relieve pressure in order to get the heads to move freely. I've been using them for many years now and still struggle with moving them up and down the neck. Also, I highly recommend putting blue tape over the exposed parallel clamp shaft that sits under your glue ups. Once glue gets on them and dries up, it can be a pain in the butt to get good clamping pressure in the area where the dried glue is. Another advantage of owning Parallel clamps is being able to combine two clamps for extended reach with Bessey's clamp extender kit. And last (but not least) you can reverse the clamping pressure to pushing pressure by flipping the Bessey K Body clamp's head in the opposite direction. Thanks Darrell.

Hi Ej, I haven’t had my Bessey’s as long as you - so far no problems moving the jaws ( I’ll keep my fingers crossed) I try not to let the bars come in contact with the glue up - I’m using the bar spacers that come with the clamps to elevate them off the surface.

Lots of great tips in this video, thanks. My strategy when I was buying K-body-type clamps: - Stick to one brand. It's so much easier to use clamps in a glue-up when they're all the size height and shape. Bessey, Jet, Jorgensen, etc., are all good; just pick one. I picked Bessey mostly at random. - Most times; I bought one clamp per paycheck. It spread out the pain. - An exception to the one-per-paycheck: occasionally, the Big Box stores would switch suppliers for their clamps. For example, in my area, Home Depot is currently a Bessey store and Lowe's is a Jorgensen store. In years past when I was buying clamps a store would change. When they did, they'd "blow out" clamps from their old suppliers at really cheap prices. I remember once driving to 3 different Home Depots when they were getting rid of the Besseys. Each store only had a few left. I saved a ton of money.

I've used USA Jorgensen I-beam clamps for years, I have about 16 of them. I have about 40 or so 1/2" and 3/4" USA made Jorgensen pipe clamps. I bought 8 of the K-body clamp in your video at the big box store for about $50, and I liked them O.K. I bought 8 E-Homa K-body type clamps, I think they were made in Tiawan. I really like them. I also have about 8-10 Jorgensen Cabinetmaster clamps the ones made in Asia, and they are garbage. The threads on the screws becomes worn quite quickly and the don't operate very smoothly any longer. Hey, the best way to bring the price down on those is to buy pipe from a metal supplier, and thread it yourself. I got my clamps on a great cyber Monday sale, just under 13.20 per set, and a whole range of pipes from metal supermarkets, precut to my desired length. 18" was 4.60 apiece, 48" was 12.34 apiece, and this was all in the past year. I got a cheap pipe thread die from Harbor freight and gave it a whirl, although I would advocate for finding or befriending an electrician with and electrically driven die. They're quite expensive, but would save you about 10 minutes apiece.

My primary machine is the Multi-router but if I have the need to use templates I use the Panto-Router. It really boils down to what you are used to (I have had MR for over 20 years) and what kind of work you do. Both are good machines.

You should be able to buy them from Woodpeckers - Panto-Router now offers pneumatic clamps too for their machine.

Nice shop! But the mats by the Felder saw makes me nervous just looking at it. I used to do full panel processing on similar saws. just hate the thought of having something to trip over. How do you like the jointer with the euro guard? I never used one. They look they can really slow movement and processing.

Heads up on that wooden handle. It will be prone to snapping. Stanly added a steel rod in their handles. Just look at any old Stanly hand plane.

Hi Darrell...It's been almost 2 years since this review. How do you feel about the Pantorouter vs the milti-router now? Do you find that the pantorouter has found a more prominent place in your joint arsenal, or is the multi-router still your primary joint making machine?

Hi Fred, The longer I have the PantoRouter the more reasons I find to use it - especially now that I have pneumatic hold downs for it. I have had the MultiRouter for over 20 years and its been integrated into my thinking and processes - so it still gets more use. I am amazed though at the ability of the PantoRouter to adjust to perfect fitting joints. When I have dovetails or box joints to do I always use the PantoRouiter.
