  • In this video I use the Shaper Origin to route the crescent inlays.
The crescent shape inlays behave differently than the square ebony pegs of my Greene and Greene work. The square pegs are made slightly larger than their corresponding pocket and once back beveled, can be tapped into place with a small mallet in a controlled fashion.
The crescents, because of their shape, tend to go in unevenly. So, instead of making them larger than their pocket, I go the other direction and make them slightly smaller. There is a very fine line between small enough to make for a controlled entry and leaving gaps. Finding that sweet spot involves running some scrap wood as tests . Trial and error.
The height of the inlay piece is a variable as well. Depending upon how aggressive the pillow shape of the crescent's face , will determine the height of the inlaid piece. Again this involves a bit of trial and error.
There will be one more video in this series which will cover finishing the piece , cutting out the decagon shaped back and installing the hanging hardware. The next video will also cover making a pattern for the mirror.
I will be making available (for $20) the drawings for both the 4-sided version of this mirror frame and this 10--sided version .
The package will include both .dxf and .svg versions of the frame. The .dxf version should allow most CNC users to built the frames while the .svg files will be for Shaper Origin users.
If I get enough interest in the drawings I will get to them sooner than later - leave some feedback if you would like to start building this project

Nice touch on the sizing of the inserts Darrell. I have a project in mind for the four sided frame, window molding for a small bathroom window. Also a frame for a ceiling recessed light opening. I have a Shaper Origin and it would be a great help to have the .svg files. I am not in a hurry.

Hi Scott, good to hear from you. I will probably have those files ready next week sometime.

@@DarrellPeartFurnitureMaker That would be great. As I mentioned, I am not in a big hurry.

Thanks for the video, Darrell! I wonder how many crescents I’d lose trying to back-bevel on the disk sander? 🤣

Would you normally make a group of the crescents all at once? Instead of one to show us how it is done?

I do it just how I did it in the video. I cut them out in a batch but then pillow them one at a time. Pillowing one at a time and cutting it off allows me to have better access (more clearance) to the next one .

Why can't you back bevel both sides on the spindle sander? Seems to me it would be easier and save some time.

You could back bevel both sides on the spindle sander but it's slow going compared to how fast the disc sander removes material. For me its faster to use the disc sander - then take a couple of steps over to the spindle sander.
