I love Meat Loaf. I was "barely 17" and had just met the man that became my husband when BOOH dropped. I wore that album out. Do For Crying Out Loud from the same album. No video but the song is fantastic.

I think if you like these videos you would enjoy "Magic/Bird -A Courtship of Rivals." It is one of the best made sports documentaries I have ever seen. Also, people talk about Jordan being a big trash talker...Jordan has said that he learned his trash talk from watching Larry Bird. He could see the advantage Bird gained from doing it and being able to back it up.

Oh my God! This is the second black-owned channel I've watched that shows reactions to this song. Why do black people have such a hard time when the band sings, "Play that funky music, white boy?" What? I have no problem with it.

I remember well in the UK when The Queen Is Dead album was originally released, so many people returned the record to the shop in which they purchased it. Simply due to the song Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others. As the song fades in and then immediately drops out again only to be faded back in again only longer this time, the fans thought there was a mastering issue on the vinyl pressing or cassette tape. They had no idea it was intentional and assumed this to be an error and thus requested a replacement copy. 😊

Elvis grew up in poverty in a black community in Tupelo, Mississippi, so he knew what it was like to grow up in a ghetto. It’s a shame you didn’t do the live version of this. Watching Elvis perform this in concert gives more to the whole song, because its not only heard but seen. Mac Davis was a song writer, not a singer. It’s a symbiotic relationship between songwriter & singer. The singer needs the right song to sing & the songwriter needs the right singer to sing his song. Another singer might have sung In the Ghetto without having the same impact, but Elvis had a huge worldwide fan base, & anything he sang inevitably hit the charts pretty quickly. Also, because Elvis had himself grown up in a black ghetto, he was able to put those emotions, of knowing what it was like to be hungry & to go without what others took for granted, into his singing of that song. He wanted others to know what it could be like for a child growing up in the ghetto.

Jane H commenting …. When this song came out in 1969, I had already been a fan of Elvis for a couple of years. I was 17 then, & here in New Zealand, it was being given a lot of air time, & I loved it from the first time I heard it. Then, towards the end of that same year, I travelled to the other side of the world by ocean liner & when I arrived in England, I heard it a lot on the radio too. It was really popular, as any Elvis record was.

Elvis had his songwriters write this as a tribute to Martin Luther King after he had been assassinated. As far as I know, he only sang it at the 68 Comeback Special, & never again, because it was his way of making a statement over the senseless killing of a man he greatly admired. His manager told him Not to sing it, as it would destroy his career, but Elvis had been a great supporter of MLK & had privately helped to fund the MLK movement, so he would not back down. The same went for In The Ghetto.

This was a gentle, romantic song which he sang in a movie about falling in love. It wasn’t meant to be pushed or rushed or anything else, other than it was. Elvis did over 700 songs/recordings in his career, so there are plenty of songs that he sings with a lot more push. There are songs which are meant to be sung softly & gentle, & there are songs that are meant to be song with gusto, & then everything in-between. I’ve been a fan for a number of decades, & I was only 15 the first time I heard Elvis singing on the radio. I’m 72 now, & still a big fan of his. There are plenty of songs to choose from at different tempos. Elvis has a stunning voice, considered to be one of the best voices in the world, but of course it is all a matter of taste.

Nice Reaction. Elvis was very polite & would thank his audience after every song. This was one of his endearing qualities. Elvis called himself an entertainer, & indeed he was. He was most likely reading the names of celebrities in the audience, so that he could introduce them to everyone. They would have been handed to him at some time during the concert. He often had movie stars or other singers/performers attending his concerts, or other well known people, especially when he was performing annually at the Las Vegas International.

There is a Part 2 to this documentary, & I am hoping that you & other Reactors have either already done a Reaction to it, or are going to do one. The more people get to see this, & the more Reactions done on this, the better. It will help to set some wrongs to right, repairing some of the dreadfully unfair damage to the reputation of a very good man & an Iconic singer who was very influential in the black music scene, & at breaking down segregation laws among young people, at the risk of his own career. Yes that’s a photo of Elvis as a small child, with his parents. Elvis Never called himself the King of Rock’n Roll. His fans & other musicians called him that. In fact, at one big concert when a fan called him The King, Elvis stopped singing & said to the audience that he was not the king. He said there was only one king, & that was Jesus. Elvis actually told Iconic Welsh singer, Tom Jones, that he was not the king of rock’n roll. He told him that title belonged to Chuck Berry. That guy should have done a bit of research before tearing Elvis down in his music, & that did a huge amount of damage to a man who had always been humble & had always been honest. What other people called him, was Not down to Elvis himself & that was grossly unfair.

Jane H commenting …. Elvis was raised in a very poor black community in Tupelo in Mississippi. His family was one of three or four very poor white families living in this black community, & Elvis quickly made friends with the black children & until he was around 14, they were his best friends. His family moved to Memphis when he was around 14, but while he was living in that black community for several years, Elvis was exposed to Black Gospel at church, & it was always his favourite music. That’s why, after his move to Memphis, he went to sing Gospel at the church of Rev Brewster. Those early years, as he was growing up within the black community, were a great influence on Elvis when he was a child & then a younger teenager. So he wasn’t ‘stealing’ from black music, it was just what he had grown up with. He had a great affinity with black people & he still sang Gospel after performances when he wanted to relax, sometimes all night.

Elvis was a megastar while he was alive, so he isn’t more famous in his ‘absence’. As Sami David Jnr said in this documentary, people would fly in from all over the world, to see him. Elvis was Huge in his lifetime. And he certainly was not racist.

The time period is STILL TODAY. Some watch this music genre & think we're NOW a racist country?? False. DO NOT listen to today's news. We are STILL have? THE SAME as the 70's. Great music will always be GREAT music!!
