    How many miles off-shore are you? You're just following the coastline down, yes? The reason I ask, is that hopefully I will be heading down to the Med later in the year once the solar powered catamaran I'm completing is ready. My simple plan was just to follow the coastline all the way round.

    • @sailinghjem
      @sailinghjem 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@fredflintstone1428 we’re mainly following the coastline south rather than crossing the Bay of Biscay. It really is doable as there are plenty of places to stop. We’ll go as far offshore as is needed, we aim to get back to shore of an evening. The west coast of France is a major sailing ground that the French frequent in great numbers, for good reason! Then the north coast of Spain also has a lot of options, some of which are off the beaten track and look beautiful. Portugal has been a maritime power for a very long time and the harbour infrastructure reflects it, so many options also. It just takes a lot longer than the more direct route, but you get the chance to have a truly memorable summer whilst taking your time. In a catamaran you’ll be able to make many more miles per day that we can in our monohull, assuming she’s a decent size, so your passage options will be many and overall time required will be a lot less, if that’s what you want. We’ll be blogging the whole trip so feel free to ask questions as we go and best of luck in getting your boat ready!

    Do you have to stop in a marina, or could you just drop anchor somewhere?

    • @sailinghjem
      @sailinghjem 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Great question. No, once checked in we are free to drop anchor, however there aren't many anchoring options between Calais and Boulogne, and those that are wouldn't have been protected while we were there. Also, we are making a conscious effort to ease ourselves and Yewy into this season so will be marina hopping to begin with. That being said, we're looking forward to finding some gorgeous anchorages as our cruising journey continues.

      @@sailinghjem paper of sufficient size for the scale you choose. Choosing a scale down that will still give you a sufficiently accurate result, not difficult I suggest. Pencil + plotter. Patrick Laine has a video where he crossed the channel on an angular course over a few tides, works out the net overall tidal set effect over the journey. Crucially he then scales down the course to steer plot to a manageable size. He plots on a chart. However visualise the same thing on paper without all the charty symbols etc and it will look like that. Give me a mo and I'll put the link to the relevant video on.

    Love the vlogs, been lurking for a while.. For electronic chart course to steer info have a look at savvy navvy. (2week free trial) They take tide, weather info and a basic sail polar into account to provide CTS and estimated SOG, with engine run times when SOG drops below your set value.. I prefer navionics for the chart info, esp the overlay options.. but for long passages savvy navvy gives a good estimate, with easy sheduling options.
