Nice job! I have a similar engine on my boat and recently changed the oil as well. Instead of pulling oil from the dipstick, next time you could use the oil drain hose (the hose hanging in front of the engine on the left). I use a vacuum pump via the oil drain hose, works great.

always a wise call to under oil the engine tbh, the alarm should kick in , if its struggling , more damage is done if you over oil it, causes a hydraulic lock and can snap the crankshaft, so well done.

Thanks for the tip, Paul. We'll keep an eye on the dipstick, but we're pleased to have the first oil change out of the way. These things always seem so much more daunting the first time.

Put a plastic bag over the old filter while screwing it off. Saves a mess 😜

Hi Rob and Faye, well done on the service. With regards to the water strainer reservoir, from what I could see on the video theres 4 through bolts on the assembly running vertically, if you remove those the glass bowl will drop off the housing for cleaning.
I'm midhrebuild with my old Perkins at the moment stuck in limbo trying to source a new flywheel, I currently have my gearbox, bell housing, starter motor, rocker cover and manifolds dotted around my saloon in various stages of repair and painting, not ideal when you live aboard haha.

Thank you very much Steve! Cor, best of luck with the rebuild. Sounds amazing to be able to take a job like that on, I bet it’s bloody satisfying when you get it finished!

Given the calm nature and the lack of mess, I believe this shows that Rob had a miss spent youth 😀. Might be easier to take the raw water strainer off the wall to undo the 4 long bolts that hold it together. However, getting it to seal again will be interesting, so good call leaving it alone for now and just cleaning the mesh strainer. Ours is in a bronze fitting so can't be seen until it comes out anyway.
Howe often does the gearbox oil need to be changed?
Your nearly home, what next? Turn left, Norway a night sail away 👍

Hi Pete, Faye here. I'll leave the technical questions to Rob, but our plans for next season involve French wine and cheese and hopefully sunnier weather.

Now that sounds enticing and our plan when we retire in 6 years or so. Brexit and the 90 day malarkey makes life a little more difficult. However, rumours the French are granting 6 month visas to overcome the problem looks promising.

@@pete9501 exactly that Pete! Have been looking into French tourist Visas which would mean we can spend time in France without being on a Schengen visa I.e. the 90 in 180. The cruising association have some very good information on this, including a case study detailing how to apply. So we hope this will help us next season on our way further south, without that pressure of 90 days.
Thanks for the advice on the water strainer! I’m an absolute noob when it comes to engines but I enjoy learning about them and it’s really satisfying to put learning into practise! Our gearbox oil has unfortunately been changed quite regularly as we have a leak! I hope it’s just the seal to the gearbox drain, which is where the oil seems to come from, but I read in the engine manual that gearbox oil leaks can be down to a misaligned shaft. So time will tell!
