One hundred and thirty-three years ago - 11th April 1890 - the first formal meeting of the Grand Order of Water Rats was established. The GOWR was created as a fraternity and charitable organisation, run by those working in the world of showbusiness. To celebrate that meeting the GOWR is today launching a TH-cam channel of past and present members doing what they do best, entertaining. Thomas Edward Trinder was born in Streatham, South London on the 24th March 1909. He made his first stage appearance at the age of 12, winning the Collins Music Hall talent show. From that show he was signed up by Will Murray to perform in Casey's Court Juvenile Comedy Show. By his early 20's Trinder had already played the biggest hall, and theatre's in the country. Radio and Films so followed and with the introduction of TV he was soon a regular on the box, billed as "the English Bob Hope", which is quite ironic as it was an incident with Bob Hope that got him fired off his most famous show "Sunday Night at the London Palladium".
He died 10th July 1989

Billy Whitlock, Water Rat 249. Born Frederick Gabriel Penna, 18th July 1874 was a singer and comic on the Music Hall stage. He played xylophone and hand bells and was quite a unique musician. Whitlock also had a vast recording catalogue, and was considered a remarkable engineer for the time. He died 26th January 1951

Starting out as a singer, he was in West End productions of Sweet Charity, Company and Hair, he moved into the Vent world in the 70s and won the TV talent show "New Faces" in 1976. This show was on the day before Frank Sinatra performed at the Royal Festival Hall and Frank watched this show in his Claridges hotel room. Apparently he really enjoyed Sandy Powell's performance among others.
